Hey Jarrett I have a question it's not related to the video but I recently got a new vinyl and the first time playing it out the package a part of the song skipped and I thought it was wierd so I played it through again, now the part of the song had a verse that was sang 3 or 4 times throughout the song and on the same part on each verse it skips have you ever heard of something like this? Was that intentional by the record company or is my vinyl just scratched?

@Boswd

100% would wager the skipping was caused by the queing lever fulcrum.... sometimes they don't go down all the way this can cause skipping. It's almost always the reason.... and that can happen on more expensive turntables as well.
@31cify
@31cify Жыл бұрын
@@lauracorbett4577 Yeah, of course. The LP60X is miles ahead of those suitcases. The needle it comes with is a conical. Good quality, nothing wrong with it, but it can be upgraded to an elliptical which is the next step up to higher fidelity.

I'd like to see a review on one of those over-engineered $5,000 - $10,000 turntables to see what it is that they do that something like a Fluance RT-85 can't. Certainly the manufacturers would happily send you some to show off whatever it is they do.

Most probably the tonearm is better designed (less bearing friction, better tracking, etc) and has better wow-flutter and SNR ratio. But I'd imagine it's not a night and day difference and it's probably not worth the money
@seano218

For starters, it will last longer and sound better. Go to a hifi shop and listen to one. Although, they probably won't be using your speakers or amp or even phono pre-amp (if you're not using a seperate, you're messing up), so it will all sound much better than your current setup, not to mention probably better speaker placement than what you have as well... making the whole experience of just listening to an expensive TT hardly comparable for you to even comprehend compared to your setup. Will it sound $10k better than yours? Doubt it, but WILL sound better than what you currently have letting you hear and experience sounds in the recording that you currently aren't capable of.

I think they're just fine as an entry level turntable, maybe its all someone can afford, like anything you can buy a better one when you can afford it. They don't ruin records they just won't play to their full potential, that is all.

Very kind of you Jarrett, for giving your sister a genuine shout out! A trait of a "bad turtable" I learned from this channel is one with a cheap, short, PLASTIC tonearm! I had to point this out to a family member who got a free vintage MCM stereo cabinet a few months ago. He's using it as living room furniture, and the radio works, but I told him NOT to put any vinyl in that thing. He listened, thank goodness! 😊

It mainly applies to modern turntables. With vintage ones, if it’s a record changer, those are fine as long as they’re properly maintained. The tension spring sets the tracking force on those. I actually have a late 60s/early 70s Lear Jet console with a heavily upgraded changer.

If you're broke like me and can't afford an audio technica, feel free to use your cheap players as long you earn more money to buy a better player. And also please keep cleaning your LPs so that the needle won't pushed dirt and dust into the groove and damaging it.

Regarding the Victrola pictured in your video, there are line out ports on the back to connect it to external speakers, which eliminates the issue you described. I have heard of the tonearm being too heavy on those, but as I don't own one myself I can't comment. If it is too heavy, I suppose it would be possible to replace it with something higher quality, even if that would be a lot of work. That being said, it seems like a great little idea, but I'd have to buy one to see if it's actually any good. At the very least you can't deny its aesthetic appeal.

Great video, though do wanna highlight one line of turntables, which despite being portable, and having overbite, as well as being lightweight is still a great device, that being the Audio-Technica Sound Burger line of turntables. Though still, in general, lightweight, portable and overbite are still often things you want to avoid. Those suitcase turntables (e.g. Crosley Cruiser) all use the EXACT same turntable mechanism. So steer clear of any with that mechanism. It's got a very distinctive looking tonearm design and once you've seen it you'll be able to identify it every time and stay away from turntables with that mechanism. Also those red cartridges.

Absolutely right. The LP60X and the Sony are definitely where you begin. Their fidelity competes with higher end models, especially when you replace the conical stylus with an elliptical. LP Gear's carbon fidelity elliptical stylus was specially designed for upgrade on turntables like these. They track the grooves of a record with more precision, their more responsive, tracking each and every nuance curve more accurately. It's all over the place, extracting highs, mids and lows from a record which the standard conical doesn't achieve to the same level.

The problem with modern cheap turntables is that the factory installed ceramic cartridge is a cheap knockoff of the Japanese-made Chuo-Denshi CZ-800. While the original is a decent cartridge when properly loaded, the knockoffs struggle with tracking issues, especially skipping and the potential to damage records, especially if the stylus is defective. When I fix those, I replace the cartridges with genuine CZ-800s, AUE CP-38, or if they play 78s, the Pfanstiehl P-192D.

Stick with those from the 1970s and early 1980s. Those are easier to fix and are somewhat upgradable if you get the right model.

That red, plastic cartridge is definetely a red flag too. It sounds just terrible! I'd rather listen to 64 kbit/s MP3s for the rest of my life, than to a record played back with this cartridge.

Its a knockoff of the Chuo-Denshi CZ-800 cartridge. These suffer from QC issues and not only sound horrible, but are notorious for skipping and tracking issues. The genuine ones from Japan sound far better, but has to be properly loaded in an input with at least 2.2MΩ.

So does that mean this cartridge is even worse than a standard ceramic cartridge? Standard ceramics sound OK for occasional use before the (usually) sapphire stylus wears out, but I never expected they could degrade on that 😆

What about older vintage record players lol. I have a 60s styles voice of music suit case player, and a magnvox tube console record player. Basically, real record players not anywhere close to a crappy modern crosly.
@ct1660

Those are fine as long as its properly maintained.

@ct1660 Well, the turntables on them have been maintained. Believe it or not, the amps on those old players have never really needed any servicing except some replacement tubes about 10 years ago on the console unit. The Amp is still original still untouched, same with the suite case player Amp has never been touched, and they still perform perfect no loud hum / buzz either right down to the original power cords that haven't fallen apart yet. They have, however, been kept in consoled environments all their life and have never really been taken out of service. I've owned the players for 20 some years now before that my grandmother had them. The speakers in them are still original as well they even still have the original finish on them.. I'd say they have been well cared for and do get powered up on a regular basis. That voice of music suits case player. I tell you what sure beats a lot of modern players even though it's just a basic player console unit that performs well, too. The console unit has a collaro record changer in it still fully functional. I normally manually load the records, though. The vm player is a single record player, not a changer.

The idea of an adjustable arm and counterweight worries me. If you don't have them set just right, don't they ruin your records?
@ZeusTheTornado
@ZeusTheTornado Жыл бұрын
If you set the counterweight so that the tracking force is very low or very high, it could damage your stylus and your records, but it's something very hard to do accidentally

The ‘overbite’ is such nonsense. My highly regarded SRT 605 (predecessor to the Beogram 1000) and Braun PC-3 have ‘overbite’ and they both sound great. Your overbite assumption is wrong. Overbite does not matter at all in most turntables since it only matters what the position of your spindle is on your turntable. As long as the spindle position is in the middle of your turntable then you won’t have any issues whatsoever when it comes to stability or sound.

I have audio technica lp120 which i love.... i think there maybe least one exception of all on one turntables being bad ... lenco do one with 2 x 15 watts with 2 x 10 watts plus acts as bluetooth speaker.. i also hsve this and i was impressed. Was 150 from 220 so not as cheap as ya 3 watt plastic crap. Admittedly i bought a colour heavy plastic platter just to get better sound quality n dampen down a bit.
