Mine is a 03 with 245,000 miles. The engine runs great but needs rear shocks. When you get repairs, do you get Honda parts or aftermarket? My first car was a 2001 Honda CR-V I bought in 2014 off an older woman who had used it for church and groceries. In 2014, it only had 25k miles on it. I loved that car and took pride in taking care of it and would receive compliments about how well it was maintained whenever I got my oil changed or needed a new part or just by strangers at the gas station. Anyways, last month, someone was driving on the wrong side of the road and crashed into my car. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but my suspension was trashed. My beloved car is now in the junkyard in the sky. I'm close to purchasing a new vehicle, hoping for a 2013 CR-V. It's my first time interacting with a dealership so I've been researching up a storm. When we looked at our first SUV purchase in 2003, the CRV was our preferred choice over the RAV 4 due to the longer wheel base and more stable ride. Really happy with our choice - super reliable, tight turning radius, lots of room (full size spare is on the outside). Only downside is that it has been noisy on highway road trips, which was a widespread issue for Honda's in general for many years. So in 2012, when we needed to retire an old vehicle, we found ourselves comparing the two vehicles again, and picked the RAV4 that time. Toyota had extended their wheelbase, and it was definately the quieter highway ride. That was the last year that Toyota kept the full size spare on the back and it still had a "boxy" rear end, so still lots of room inside. We still drive both - the CRV for errands around town and winter driving, while the RAV4 is our preferred highway hauler. Both have been economic, reliable vehicles, and we expect to run them for at least 25 years before they are retired. Will be interesting to see how the two models compare at our next vehicle update - may find ourselves looking at autonomous driving capabilities and perhaps the distance they can travel on an electric battery charge or hydrogen fill-up.

We have a 2016 CR-V (100000 miles ) and a 2008 RDX( 170000 miles ) , the RDX is very comfortable for a long distance road trip (I mean normally drive above 1500 miles in a day), good for a windy or snowing day too, And the CR-V good for in town driving and shopping but not that well on a winy highway VS the RDX , the RDX has more safe and stable feel in a windy highway driving. I drove both on test drives in 2020 and plumped for the new RAV4 Hybrid. The key selling point was the safety system. The driver must still be in control. But...the driving experience particularly with Adaptive Cruise Control is incredible. I think the new RAV4 Hybrid is an exceptional car.

I prefer those older RAV4 with a spare tire in the back and sliding doors. It’s utilitarian and rugged. I buy older cars both because they are simpler, easier to work on, cheaper to buy, (I spend max 5K on a car) and of course, no car payments and cheaper to insure. It’s a win/win for me.

Both Toyota and Honda made very good cars but when I first started working in the late '80's, I needed a reliable and yet easy to maintain so I went with a Toyota Corolla FX16 GTS hatchback. Drove it for 8 years with just regular maintenance but decided to give it to my little brother after buying a Toyota Pickup truck and drove it for 12 years. In the year 2000, I bought a 4Runner SR5 4x4 and still drive it today to tow my fishing boat around. Also bought a 2009 Corolla 4 door sedan and mainly use it for commuting to work. I still could not switch over to a Honda since both of my Toyotas are still running fine.

The only gripe is the high noise level in the car, typical with any Honda. We are careful to do the fluids at correct intervals. At 6' 4" and healthy build, I was able to sit in the driver's seat, and then behind it in the 2nd row without moving the driver's seat. The rear of the cabin also had the raised ceiling which let me sit up straight. Really well thought out cabin design in my opinion.

I have a 2002 Rav4 and the vehicle has been still very very reliable today in 2021. Excellent build quality for a 19 year old vehicle. Nice thing about the 2002 Rav4 is that the average weekend mechanic can still do their own DIY work on the car. First and second gen. Rav4 are not overly complex and still very easy to work on and parts are still readily available at the local NAPA and Auto-parts parts dealers....
@Barneyrubble2412 жыл бұрын
That's why I'm trying to find a reasonably low mileage older car. I'm nowhere near what anybody would classify as a mechanic, but I can do a lot of easy stuff. Changing out parts isn't the hardest thing in the world and KZbin is a fantastic resource for repairs. The simpler the car the less expensive it will be to operate over the long haul and the more repairs I can do myself.
@happycat04112 жыл бұрын
@@Barneyrubble241 My 2002 Rav4 is pretty easy to work on. The only thing I found difficult was trying to find the location of the timing chain tensioner as there is a very common oil leak at the rubber seal on most Toyota with 4 cylinder engines. other than that everything else is pretty straight forward as long as you have some general knowledge about fixing cars. Not a lot can go wrong. Just do a extra strong 60% antifreeze and 40% water mix and the cooling system will be fine for the next 6 ~ 7 years. Aside from that I only change my oil once a year with conventional Walmart oil and my Rav4 still hasn't had any problems whatsoever. Parts are still easy to get as the Rav4, Camry and Corolla are all based on the same engine and chassis. Only the outer body is different. The front quarter panel and front door are also ABS plastic so this keeps rust very minimal. If you can't find a second generation Rav4 the next best bet is a Honda Element and the front and rear quarter panels on the Element are also made of ABS plastics and Honda engines are extremely reliable. Some rusting above the windows on the Element but in general very well made and comparable to the second generation Rav4s. Even if the Rav4 you find has +300,000 km, as long as the Rav4 is in good overall condition the Rav4 should last to at least 500,000 km. Most people here in Canada have Toyota trucks that have well over 450,000 km and they are still going strong mechanically that is. Mind you there is some rusting with cars that old but look at the Dodge Rams and F150s. Most of these trucks start rusting after year 5. My Rav4 has next to zero rust and the Rav4 is 20 years old. Rav4s also use a timing chain thus one should never need to open the engine for any major repairs whatsoever. Also get yourself a Haynes repair manual for the Rav4 as well Some people have had problems with the ECM computer but if the Rav4 you plan on buying has over 200,000 km the ECM will be fine. If the ECM hasn't gone by them then it will not (it's a soldering fix that isn't had to do yourself if the transmission starts acting up. As well, if the engine light is on, don't worry about it too much. My engine light is permanently on and I have had zero problem with the engine whatsoever. Usually it's just a bad O2 sensor and if everything is running fine just ignor the engine light. Everything in the Rav4 is still all mechanical. That's the way they were designed. Simple and very very robust. Also spend a little more money and try to buy from owners in a richer area as richer people tend to maintain their cars better and have dedicated mechanics and auto repair shops do all of their repair work on their cars.

Guys I work at a Honda dealership. And lemme be honest with you: Avoid the CRV. Especially if you're choosing it over the Rav4. If you can get a good deal on one MAYBE. But if they're almost the same price then don't even think about the crv. The older ones were better made but the 1.5L turbos are not so good. Engine problems, transmission problems, sometimes electrical problems and the built quality of the interior is just not on the same level as the Rav4. They're not absolute garbage but they're a far cry from Toyota's offering. I've spent a lot of time with both (Rav4 being my best friend's car and I deal with probably tens of crvs a day at work).

Has your evaluation of the Honda 1.5 L changed in recent months?

That means you're going to get it today. That means you're in a "new" ride. Congrats.

I should have never sold the '08 CRV to my buddy for 1/2 price. It was my second car and he needed a car about a year and a half ago.

We still have our 2009, with almost 180,000 miles. Most reliable car we have ever owned with the exception of the air conditioner

We have the 2018 Toyota RAV4 le and it has so much room in it, perfect for when we go on vacation. It has plenty of power and the handling is absolutely smooth. It cuts corners and curves like it's on rails. Great gas mileage. Also it just feels sturdy and safe while driving. We love it our kids love it and our friends and family love it
