We bought a very low mileage 2008 in 2010 to pull behind our motorhome. The motorhome is history. The Honda is still going strong as our daily (only) driver. It’s the best car I’ve ever owned. Regular oil and filter changes and one set of tires have been the only maintenance needed. It’s still under 100K miles. Since I’m 76, it’s looking like the CR-V will outlast me.

My 2011 CRV which has over 300,000 miles on it, has strut and trim issues as well. The back tires wear on the inside leading to cupping. I've tried to have it fixed but there is still a bit of an angle on them. Other than that, it's been an almost perfect car other than the driver window just stopped working. The engine sounds like it could reach 500,000 or much more.

209,000 miles on my 3rd generation 2009 LX and going strong. Basically trouble free. Engine and transmission are rock solid smooth and amazing. Never had the valves adjusted. As others have noted, it just keeps going. At 200,000 I replaced all the shocks/struts with new Honda OEM parts. The ride had gotten a bit floaty and the new struts brought back the old taut but comfortable feel and tight handling. I am expecting it will hit 300,000 easy. It is just been an amazing vehicle.

My 2010 CRV just passed 320,000 miles. Changed plugs once, changed alternator once, replaced ac blower motor once, replaced 4 struts and shocks, and I've faithfully changed the oil every 9,000 miles. The ac compressor was permanently removed about 6 months ago. Now takes 56" serpentine belt. Numerous tires replaced and I take it w/dog to the park every day and we go fishing at least once a week. I think the danged car will outlive me tbh.

I work at a mechanic workshop in Australia. Every single RD/RE CRV we service has developed oil leaks from the VVT spool valve. You can replace the seal but it will start leaking again eventually. Replace the whole valve assembly to start with is my advice and while you’re at it, do the valve cover gasket and oil filter housing seal.

I have a '99 also with 338,000 on it. Still my daily driver. The only major issue was I needed a valve job. The owner's manual states to adjust the valve lash at 100,000 miles. the interval is actually about 30,000 miles. Only the U.S. manual says 100,000 miles, the rest say 30,000. Honda would not fix it, but they did issue a TSB sometime in the 2000's. Too late for me. The symptoms usually begin as a check engine light that reveals misfires in one or more cylinders, along with a rough idle. I ended up with 2 burned exhaust valves. The root cause (I found out later) was soft valve seats which allowed the lash to diminish gradually over time. My engine is the 2.0L 4-cyl. non-vtec B20Z. Other than that, it's been a good vehicle.

I bought my 2006 CR-V EX-L new, currently has 259K miles. The A/C issue you described happened to me at approximately 85K miles, yes, I had the dealer replace the entire A/C system at an approximate cost of $1,900.00. Dealer told me the issue was a lack of oil in the compressor and recommended having an oil charge added to A/C system every 100K miles, I never added a charge and haven’t suffered any new A/C system failures. Since I’ve reached 250K miles, I have to replace the alternator and water pump. This car has been the most trouble free and cost effective vehicle I’ve owned in the past 38 years.

Great explanation overall but I’d like to expand on the 3rd generation door lock issues. I had an 08 LX and around 110k miles, the rear passenger door lock actuator failed, leaving it stuck between lock/unlock and couldn’t be adjusted manually. That triggered an auto-lock for all 5 doors, and left it either unresponsive to the remote or would unlock and immediately re-lock. Key entry was difficult because 1) only the driver door was equipped and 2) the auto-lock was always engaged making it difficult to turn the key to unlock, and often didn’t work at all. Plus, the remote key fob isn’t designed for that and would easily break. I had two babies in car seats making this situation incredibly dangerous. I had to roll all the windows down before exiting just to make sure I could get my kids out. My choices were to get it fixed ($2000+) or disable the locks by removing the door panel and unplugging the locks, making it impossible to secure my vehicle which is what I did. The rear lift gate wouldn’t unlock at all. Honda was no help at all, probably because it was a widespread problem and should have been subject to a recall. I even contacted CPSC about it. It was 10k past the warranty window. So... if you’re test driving a 3rd generation CR-V, make sure to put those locks to work or be handy enough to know how to replace them.

Despite all this, this is the best car I have owned as far as quality goes. It has 150,000 miles on it and it has no squeaks, no rattles, everything still works and it rides as smooth as the day I took it off the lot. One more thing. We have 6 Hondas on our driveway. Among them we have a 2007 CRV and a 2014 CRV. Both have been reliable with regular maintenance and the odd problem easily repaired. These two generations are solid choices. However in 2015, things changed, and in my opinion not for the good. The introduction of the CVT transmission in 2015 was done to decrease the cost of manufacture, however the long term reliability of them is still in question. The other problem is with the direct injection introduced in 2015. This is a not problem initially, however over time, the intact valves become dirty and coated with carbon, causing the combustion process to get affected, resulting in decreased gas mileage, idling issues, reduced efficiency. The cost to clean the intake valves is expensive and complicated, and the emphasis is on complicated. Mechanics are not prefect, and when ever you require a complicated service, you open the door to mistakes being made (costly ones!). If Honda reverts back to port injection, this problem is solved. In Honda's newer turbo models, the issues of direct injection is amplified. If Honda did like Toyota and designed both port and direct injection on the same engine, lots of these issues would be resolved. It's a matter of cost and design. Till they fix this, I cannot recommend a Honda that has only a direct injection (turbo is not the problem) and I'm concerned with the CVT transmissions being not a good choice as well.

Yes, the door locks will automatically lock/unlock when car is put into drive/park or if you come to a stop for a few seconds. This is a programmable feature and can be changed. I noticed this when I bought my used CRV. I've since programmed my CRV to stop this auto-lock feature. It's no wonder that the lock mechanism will fail sooner than normal because they were being activated umpteen times a day. I Googled on how to reprogram them. Interesting that this isn't mentioned in car reviews that I've watched so far.

Unfortunately much like the transmission issues in the Odyssey a few years ago, Honda is trying to push "fixes" which will push as many owners out of warranty. It really sucks because the new gen CRV's are a really nice. Owners are also reporting the issue with the 2.4 engine on the LX to a lower extent. Do your research always before buying. So let's get this right. You had to pay for the part and do the labor yourself, on a car with 6700 miles, you may not be aware but there is a thing called factory warranty all you do is contact the manufacturer get approval and bring the car to the dealership, they fix it for you not only that but manufacturers that actually respect their customers even provide a loaner vehicle while the work is being done. One of the reasons I ditched Japanese brands is the fact that they don't provide a loaner while the car is in their shop for warranty work.

on the subject of oil dilution. Your oil's viscosity is constantly reduced causing a slightly (less lubrication) increased metal on metal friction (wear). The owners manual tells us that using the wrong oil will damage the engine and the warranty will be void. Diluting the oil is the same as using the wrong oil viscosity. Hondas without the 1.5L turbo are known to last 15 - 18 years worry free. A 6 year old Honda with a 1.5L turbo will have as much wear as a 16 year old 2.4L non turbo engine.

Thanks Greg! I'm the 3rd owner of a 03 CR-V EX model and about 10 - 12 years ago I had to replace the a/c. It cost me around $1,000. I was told they only last about 100,000 miles. I'm at 150,000 or so miles now and the a/c has been working fine ever since. Just recently, my driver's side door lock stopped working. It won't open or lock with the remote and just the past couple of days I've had a hard time getting the key in the lock. When neither of those work, I have to unlock the passenger side front door with the key and lean over to reach the driver's side door lock to unlock the doors. What a pain! Wish I could just beam in! I called a local Honda dealer and they said the actuator has failed and that a new one would be $350. Looks like I'll be leaning across the passenger seat for a time... I also had one other issue in 2013 when the car was 10 years old. I was traveling across state with the car loaded down with "stuff" from the sale of mom's estate when suddenly I would give it the gas and the car would vibrate and not accelerate very well at all. Turned out the valves needed adjusting. I went to a non-Honda mechanic whom I trust and he did the work for $600. Been running fine ever since. Almost forgot another major issue that I had with the 6 CD changer. It completely failed about 5 years ago! I called the dealer and they said they probably wouldn't even be able to find a replacement and it would be cost prohibitive if they could. Thank God it came with a cassette player - with an adaptor I can play my ipod. So, I guess I've had a few issues. But I still like the car.

After Toyota we bought our first 2009 Honda CR-V LX base model. 150k miles later it's still the family favorite. We bought a 2012 CRV a few years later for our second CRV. The only problems we've had over the last decade plus is replacing the starter twice on the 2009 - cheap and easy fixes. I'd agree with the trim issues but I don't care. The 2012 has that valve rocker arm adjustment issue... hard to find someone good enough to tune that properly. Best engines/cars I've ever driven/owned. One important problem to mention about this platform (CRV/Element) is an excessive rear negative camber, due to the rear upper control arms that come from factory, are not being of an adjustable type. So you end up with excessive rear tire wear. And the older the car gets and the more suspension wears out and gets lower, the more negative camber you’ll have in the rear. It’s an easy fix though, by getting aftermarket adjustable control arms

I thought it needed shocks/struts but the mechanic said those were ok but it needed motor mounts. The car did not have a severely bad ride and tire wear was normal. My friend replaced all three mounts and now the car sways and nose dives like a boat and it was not doing that before the mount repair. We got wheel alignment 2 wheels only (?) and tie rod ends and it is better but still 90% boat sway especially when hitting bumps. They now say it needs ball joints and upper control arms and the repair list will go on and on for deep pockets. Now they want to do the struts and shocks but I am not sure that will help. It drives like the frame has completely shifted on the car. Help! Help! Every mechanic says something different.

Just bought one top of the line a Touring fully loaded. Not sure why they are so scarce. Can’t find them in the dealerships it’s like looking for a pin in a haystack. Car drives fine, it’s safe and secure. No need to use the key to open and even lock to prevent breaking in. So far so good.

Greg, Always a pleasure to listen to your advice! I own 2009 Honda Accord, 2009 civic and 2017 odyssey. My sway bar went at 100,000 but no big deal. The 2.4 in the accord and the 1.8 in the Civic have been bullet proof! Could you move up the ladder and rate newer Accords?

I bought my 2001 AWD CR-V SE in 2005, with just 41k miles on it. Now it has 141k mi and I want for no other in its class. The dashboard clock was the first thing to go. I'm surprised you didn't mention window motors. I can't tell you how many of those that I've replaced. In fact, my CR-V is out of service this week, with panels and fenders removed and a mess of electrical stuff as my bf attempts to tackle the window problem for once and all. He believes that after testing the motors and the control box that the problem now lies in the wiring itself. Likely to have become corroded. Also, worth a mention, is the gate latch. It has slowly deteriorated as well and my original met its end last year. Now, its (used) replacement isn't far behind. Even though you were referring to the 3rd generation, your descriptions regarding the sway bars and outer trim were exact-on, being the same for my 1st generation. To be fair, the trim in my case is a newer development from sitting in direct sun consistentlly for years. My only major problem has been the transmission. This largely stemmed from lack of information in regards to the preventative maintenance that a CR-V requires. I had no idea that the transmission fluid HAD to be flushed at 30k, 60k and at 90k miles! I was only made aware of this when my bf started to look into my the transmission. The issue came about suddenly, around 119k mi. Shifting from 1st to 2nd (automatic) had quickly become an long delay - that would finally end in an aggressive thrust into gear, that learched you forward. So, affording only the bear minimum, we began giving it a transmission flush every couple of weeks, then every other month or so. And for 21k mi the transmission never got any worse. If anything, it was a bit better. I still love my CR-V and have never regretted buying it. Having had other *vehicles at my disposal for periods of time in last few yrs, I feel I can fairly defend its popularity. It is hands down, the best vehicle for bad conditions I've experienced. Even when the state closed the roads due to a snow storm, my little CRV took us on the hwy and on backroads 20miles away without a single slide or concern due to its its clearance and Real Time AWD. I'm partial to the older generations design though.Though, my opinion is from observation only. I do know that the smallest, 1st generation still allowed me the versatility to use it for just about anything. Deliver a full set of drums? No problem. Got a 3-day canoe/camping trip? Perfect. Cross country road trip? I'll be there. Sledding in the next county over during a statewide snowstorm? Did that. Being prepared for whatever came up? Always. "I'm already packed"..."Iets take my car"..."it'll fit." - phrases often heard from me. Extra Bonus points for storage :Drawer under seat/ Middle dash lower compartment/ Driver side 'secret' pocket/ Rear floor, and gate storages- All Awesome! Don't forget the picnic table! *2001 Isuzu Rodeo, hardtop convertible, 2dr, 4wd- massive rust on frame and 2doors are a huge inconvenience-always/ 1997 Ford Escort, 4dr- still going strong with zero mechanical problems, but too compact to be practical for Anything other than small passengers. / 2001 Audi A4 Quattro Wagon, FULLY loaded, AWD - Despite constant maintenance and a worthless control panel, the deal breaker was its ground clearance. It's ridiculous. What good is just 4 inches of ground clearance on ANY vehicle?! One pothole, one fallen branch, one rock - can do your car in. An animal on the road doesn't stand the smallest of chance, as they do with other vehicles going over them...I Lost my front lower bumber 3xs!

I had the 2011 CRV SE. It was great vehicle, fun to drive and a juggernaut for the miles. I bought the vehicle in 2016 after the original owner traded it in. The dealer wasn't the original service provider, nor the seller for that matter since it was a Toyota dealership in town. Ironically, the following year, they grabbed the Honda rights and built a new dealership. While I still have a positive impression of CRVs and would get one again in the future, this one had some issues I wasn't too fond of compared to my previous Subaru vehicles, which was a 2008 Impreza 5-Speed and 2013 Outback. I had sold my 2013 Outback to one of my former employers. Life changed, then I had to find a new job and buy a car. Hence, why I went with the 2011 CRV, a good price and still a ways to go in the mileage realm. Fast forward a couple of years, some pretty glaring issues with it. Going from about 63,000 miles when purchased to over 120,000 by 2018, it presented some gnarly hurdles. The AC completely died this year after multiple clutch seizures. Came to find out Honda was dealing with bad compressors on the CRV, Accord and other vehicles from 2007-2013. When I got rid of the vehicle a month ago, it still no longer worked. The worst part came in the form of calipers. My mechanic had provided warning these vehicles would blow through them more than others. Boy, was he right, too. During the lifetime of ownership of my 2011 SE, I had bought 3-4 calipers. One of them was covered by the garage since one of their locations didn't install it properly. Otherwise, I loved the vehicle, but at 131,000 miles, the cost of repair was beginning to exceed the value of it. Luckily, the dealership gave me about $5000 for it, so I have moved onto a RAV4. However, it was a bittersweet parting from it. It was a great vehicle overall and it did its primary job extremely well. It never broke down and had anything catastrophic occur to it.

Greg- everything you pointed out is spot-on. My wife has a 2008 CRV and the driver-side black panel has faded and pattern looks like carbon fiber. The locking mechanisms I have replaced myself already in the rear and when unlocked, it slowly goes back into lock position. The latest problem I have is leaking power steering fluid and now rear-rack suspension/shocks is leaking. The car only has 88K miles and drives really well with the 2.4L DOHC VTEC engine but now these wear-tear issues are starting to pop up. Dealer wanted 1600 for power steering repairs and 2000 for the rear shocks. Ridiculous and I think overpriced repair costs that almost equals the actual value of vehicle. Also the lifters on both sides of the rear hatch are weakening and not lifting the hatch to optimal height. I saw a video on how to replace these and it seems fairly easy to do. Car is hard to part with and wife doesn't want to give it up so I guess we will try and fix the issues but hopefully not at those ridiculous prices.

Thanks for the take, I appreciate it. It explains a couple things about the ‘09 I just purchased, especially the door locks issue and the loudness of the motor when you punch it. It actually kinda feels like a jeep to me when I’m driving. It’s tight, the center of gravity... seems... almost top heavy. I’m surprised that the little motor doesn’t have more umph when you’re getting up to speed, like on a freeway on-ramp. It’s a very fun car to drive. It’s at a mileage milestone area where the timing belt/belts become a concern, especially if you’ve ever had one fail. It’s a nightmare. The ‘09, as I’m sure you know, has a timing chain, instead of the belts on most years models. I THINK that this is a better situation, as I definitely don’t have the stress of fretting over getting the timing belt changed before something catastrophic happens. I haven’t read anything negative regarding the timing chain. There’s no “Honda CR-V timing chain haters club” on Facebook, or anything. That’s encouraging. I actually own a 1998 Accord LX with only 124K miles on it, and I had the MULTIPLE timing belts changed, water pump, pulley seals, etc. as well as the suspension and the car drives like the new one I had back in 1999. Although that one was an EX with a standard 5 speed transmission, which I absolutely loved. The mileage on that beautiful automobile was nothing short of remarkable. I drove from Glendora, California to south of Mexicali, Mexico every weekend for 3 weeks to assist my wife with her job in Azusa Pacific University’s Mexico Outreaches missions department. I swear I got 500 miles out of a single tank of gas. I believe, but am no expert, so I can’t be certain, that the 5 speed made all the difference in the world. You had to me be careful with that car on long drives because it was so smooth and ran so well that if you weren’t using cruise control and your mind was doing that “long drive drift”, you could look down at the speedometer, like right after you saw a CHP interceptor, and realize that you were driving well over 100 mph. That’s how smooth that car was. I regret selling it. So much fun to drive. I love manual transmissions. That’s how I was taught to drive. I prefer it in any situation. Any car or truck. Honda makes wonderful, solid, trustworthy vehicles, imho. I imagine there’s a pretty solid reason that the Accord repeatedly wins awards, year after year, decade after decade. Anyhow, thanks again for making this handy video. Aloha.

I know this is an old comment, but I just had to reply. My son owns a 2009 Honda Accord EX-L Coupe, with the manual transmission. I bought it for him when he turned 16 years old, he’ll be 23 in January, and it still drives like new. It has around 300,000 miles on it, and the only thing we’ve had to have replaced is the clutch. We ran into some electrical problems a few years back, but I paid the mechanic $25 to keep it overnight and run down the problem; ended up being a loose ground wire. At the beginning of this year my son bought a 2015 Honda Accord, super clean, with only 22,000 miles. He LOVES his new Honda, but he decided to keep his little coupe, and drive it til the wheels fall off, lol. His new car has an automatic transmission. He says while it handles really well, there’s nothing that compares to his manual.

I had a 05 Pacifica for about 11 years, I got it used. It needs too much work so last week I just bought a 2013 Honda CR-V EX-L. It's older then I wanted and I spent more then I wanted to but you guys there was literally nothing at the dealerships!! Sucky time to buy a vehicle I know but we needed it. It was between the CR-V (it has 118k miles on it) and a 2017 equinox with like 80k miles. But between the two, I heard Hondas are supposed to be good long lasting cars so I'm hoping 🤞 I gotta say, I'm so happy I have a newer vehicle and all of that, but a part of me misses my Pacifica already lol. The Pacifica was a touring trim and even to this day it rides like a dream, so smooth And it has so much more room then this CR-V. The seats are cramped. Now I just gotta figure out how to sell the Pacifica lol Well, here's to hoping I did the right thing with my life's savings... No pressure 👀

I was going to buy a 2018 CRV but read about the problem with DI 1.5 L turbos and the gas-in-oil & valve carbonization problems, and opted instead for a 2018 RAV - Toyota doesn't mess with turbos, and while they do have DI (like most manufacturers these days) they included injectors in the intake manifold to prevent the dirty valve issue.

Thanks. I was reluctant to buy a 2019 RAV because its a new design and engine, and I didn't want to be a guinea pig (even Toyota isn't perfect!), and was able to snag a new base (LE) 2018 (FWD) which the dealer still had. Good price and financing rates - got them to throw in a set of Michelin ICE (they often have promotions on these when you buy in December) on rims and remote starter for the wife. I debated about AWD, but they only had them in black (ugh!), and I think FWD suits my needs (and potentially fewer maintenance problems down the road). I'm very happy with it. Not as "luxurious" inside as a Honda, but really drives just as nice (if not a bit better when comparing base models). Mine is silver, but saw some white ones on the lot and they look hilarious - front end is like a storm trooper helmet! Toyotas aren't always the prettiest cars, but I've always had great luck with them (my former car was a Matrix with over 220 000 Km, never had to do anything other than change fluids and brakes - gave it to my dad because I wanted him to have a good, low-cost/low-maintenance car). When you buy from a dealer it can sometimes be advantageous to buy a new car rather than used, because despite the price difference, you usually get good financing rates with a new car plus full warranty. I paid $26000 (CDN) for the new 2018, whereas they had a 2016 with 30 000 km for about $23 000 - granted that one was AWD, but again, you take a hit on the warranty (getting only the residue that's left) and finance rates are significantly higher for used vehicles. Just hold firm on all the "extras" the finance guy tries to sell you, like extended warranties (not worth the paper they're printed on) and rust proofing (I Krown my vehicles annually).

@@AJ-xm4xc Oh, sorry, I'm up in Canada, where there is a lot of salt on our roads in winter, and Krown is a company that applies an oily rust proofing agent to every part of the car body (including drilling holes into door frames and panels to ensure it gets into every nook and cranny. Its generally regarded as one of the best rust-proofing oils there is, with great penetration into seams, etc.. I don't know if you have it in the States, though I'm sure you have similar products. Beats anything sold by dealerships (most of which are gimmicks anyway, and their rust proofing warranties are not worth the paper they are printed on).

Great video! My 2014 CRV, now at 92,900 km / 57,700 miles, is all right, but compared to the Toyotas I have driven, not great either. It needed brake work after less than 3 years. The remote lock/unlock failed on one of the keys (not a battery issue). There is a leaking axle. The air conditioning failed a few months ago. Headlights burn out frequently. The rear wiper arm doesn't work anymore. I am hoping that after the latest round of repairs and replacements, things will settle down.
