WORDS of WISDOM: The Sony a6100 is the greatest camera I owned despite it being only around $550. I'm not a brand loyal person but I was indeed caught in the allure of Fuji colors, retro dials, film history, etc. and had the mindset that Sony was dull and without soul. After I bought my Fujifilm XT30 and I actually shot with it, that allure quickly vanished. It overheated like crazy, the dials were a roadblock to hybrid shooting, and the ergonomics (grip, sd card door, tripod mount) were impractical and frustrating. I sold it off and bought the a6100 and despite it having worse specs in almost every way, it's a much better camera. It has amazing heat management, no record limit, the sharpest video and photo quality I've experienced, and near perfect autofocus. Also, the viewfinder is not bad, unlike what some other reviewers say and is better than my Fujifilm XT30 which has a million more dots. I'm not saying that Fujifilm is bad and that Sony is better, but what I'm saying is that cameras are tools (unless you enjoy collecting or occasionally using them as a hobby which is fine) and to value functionality over anything else.

The body for $550. I'm jealous. Where I live the body alone from all major retailers is $900 equivalent. (I live in the UK). It makes getting this camera difficult to justify at that price for sure, but all cameras over here have inflated prices so the A6100 doesn't even stand out as bad for that price. My other options would be the Panasonic G7 at $580 USD equivalent. Or a canon 250D which is $710 equivalent. Though all these cameras can be found for $150 cheaper from international eBay sellers in new condition and dodgey looking websites that have prices that seem too good to be true (even though they are still high compared to the USA).

@@theurbanartist775 video quality really isn't much different. Just a little bit better low light and decently better autofocus. Depends if those 2 things are worth it and you also gotta factor in the cost of the lens, if the new A6100 is just body only and you will need to buy your own lens I wouldn't bother unless you are really unhappy with the autofocus on the G7. After all the A6100 is a few years old at this point and will probably be replaced in a year or 2 with a newer model, so the A6100 will drop in price loads as all technology does. If you're not desperate for better autofocus for the next 2 years I wouldn't bother. You might not even use it for video for all I know in which case the autofocus isn't the most important thing anyway. For photos it's really not worth the upgrade. Just my opinion though, I wouldn't if the A6100 was body only as you would need to get a new lens.

here is how it works. The regular price is still $750. Sony (Like all other man.) put an instant rebate on the unit for a specific amount of time. At the end of the time it goes back up. The Government monitors these things and if it always "on Sale" with a rebate, the will make the company change the regular prices, so they always put it back up to the regular price for a small amount of time. The best bet is to get it when it has the rebate. The A6400 is the $1000 camera so it will stay at that price, with only a few rebates a year. The A6100 was originally meant to be sold at $750 with the A6000 taking the $500 price point. But there has been pressure to make it the $500 class model. Does that help?

Well, it does look like I had a great deal then! I got my Sony a6100 on Amazon (sold by Adorama) with a small camera bag, and extra battery, battery charger and car-charger for USD $548.00. I'm so glad I was able to get such a great deal, and yes, you're right, most likely prices will fluctuate over the months so for anyone who watches this video or reads this comment, stay tuned to Arthur's channel as he's got it right several times! I had been waiting for the a6400 to go on sale. Ended up finding a used a6500 body from B&H for $599 and couldn't pass it up. Got the camera and it is new. Zero actuations. I assume it was a return. Slightly bummed to miss out on the performance updates of the a6400 but I do not shoot a lot of video and do a lot of low light and indoor photography, so $599 for ibis was too good to pass up.

When the a6600 first came out, I thought it was too expensive but was going to get in anyway because I wanted the new 16-55mm f2.8 zoom lens, which doesn't have OSS. Since the a6600 has in-body IS, that was my only choice unless I wanted to go to the older a6500. I dillydallied for a while, and then - miraculously, the a6600 price dropped to $1200. Not only that, but the 16-55mm lens dropped as well about $200 if I recall. So I placed an order right away, and it looks like it's a good thing I did. I love the combo and use it almost exclusively now. Although it was still a lot of money, I have forgotten about that and just enjoy shooting with it.

I used to work in the photo retail industry. Many photo manufacturers (including Sony) adopted “instant rebate” programs, back in the early-mid 2000’s. They did this in lieu of traditional price drops. Manufacturers used to verify store inventory, and record serial numbers. They would then issue price protection credits, to make up for the price drop on the product. With the “instant rebates” programs, the retailer now has to do all the work to get the “rebate” amount back from the manufacturer. The manufacturers can also react quicker, and implement and cancel these “instant rebates” based on sales and inventory levels. This makes it easier for manufacturers to adjust retail prices so regularly and quickly. In addition, the manufacturers charge the retailers a rebate processing fee. For example, on a $100.00 rebate, there may be a 15% processing fee. The retailer now only gets a $85.00 credit back from the manufacturer, after taking $100.00 off the customer price. There’s only a 10% margin on most cameras to begin with. Another reason why independent photography stores have closed, or concentrate on accessory (non-equipment) sales. Retailers don’t want to deal with these manufacturer “instant rebate” programs.

I'm so glad you made this video! I thought it was just me, seeing all this price variation. I've been shopping for Sony APS-C's for a while. I haven't bought because the price would go way up when I was ready to buy. The Canon and Panasonic cameras, have had very stable pricing. The Sony's not so much. I can't help but wonder if the timing has had to do with job losses, stimulus checks and unemployment benefits. When people get a benefit check from the gov't, they prefer to buy Sony or Fuji. When the check is small, they buy Canon or Panasonic.

So crazy on the a6100! I lucked out and grabbed one off FB marketplace when we were visiting the in-laws. Grabbed the body, kit lens, and Bluetooth grip for $550 almost brand new. It’s been a nice second camera. I bought my 6600 on B&H when they had an open box for $1150. It shot up to $1400 days after. I bought and sold most of my cameras through OfferUp and FB. It’s been a pretty fun time.

Looks like the classic supply and demand chart. When prices are down, they have a lot to sell. When the supplies run low they raise the prices so that if you still really want that camera, you pay for it.

I bought the a6000 6 years ago and it has been my go-to camera ever since. I have a pretty sizable collection of e-mount lenses oh, and I would love to upgrade to one of the current generation bodies. I had noticed prices jumping around a bit, but your graphics we're very helpful in explaining the discrepancies I've seen. I was considering the a6400, but if I can pick up the a6100 for $300-$350 less, then I will probably go that route. I'm kinda pleasantly surprised that you brought that up, the whole "day-trading Sony cameras" thing. I've been doing that for the past two months here in Singapore and I've made about 2k profit. It's not a sustainable way to make a lot of money, but it's still free money and I've made many fun memories. I started out with 0 sony cameras at the start of the year and aside from the money I've made, now I've got an a6400, a bunch of really good lens, a good tripod, a gimbal, and a camera slider. I had an rx100 v and never used the picture profiles or 240 fps. This was the deciding factor a the a6100 was more than capable for me. I just tweaked the portrait colors slightly and bingo it was perfect.

I was selling Sony cameras at Best Buy towards the last two weeks of March. We got a lot out the door, the 6100 being the most popular. When COVID-19 hit, all our computers and webcams were selling out due to students needing the equipment for school. Businesses, especially churches, needed cheap camera equipment so some were buying gopros and cheap DSLR or APS-C cameras. The spike in price for the 6100 in April was likely due to the high demand of cameras at the time. Weird that you didn’t really mention the fact that a pandemic that impacts importing and manufacturing goods is happening during these price changes but it was definitely a big factor.

Excellent info! I bought my 6600 in early February 2020 and was able to get it when the price was at $1200 on Amazon. By the way. I recently decided that i wanted another 4k capable Sony camera and almost pulled the trigger on the 6100 while it was in its low price in June (just like on your chart) . In the end I decided on the Sony ZV-1. For what its designed to be its a great camera and a perfect compliment to my 6000, and 6600.

I missed the recent a6100 by literally days, mid June I was looking at the 6100. Once my a6000 sold on eBay I was gonna get the 6100 and I missed it by like a day! July 4th I had it saved in my cart. Im an agent and looking to add some real estate photography (as an agent) to my listing presentation. Its something I know I can create and save some money with added control as well. I also noticed some weird pricing on the A6XXX series, because they sometimes pop up as recommended products. On top of the weird price increases and drops, I think Sony is in a position to just ask whatever price they want. They seem to be in a very comfortable position in the mirrorless APS-C market. I'm curious to see if we do see a more budget fullframe mirrorless option, things might get shaken up a bit. I kind of doubt it though. Btw, I would recommend everyone to use camelcamelcamel as well for monitoring prices on Amazon, and set price alerts.

Glad to know it isn't just here in Europe where the A6*00 prices are all over the place. I started looking at them a few weeks back and was baffled by the price. One place had the 6100 16-50mm kit for $625 and now it's $750. Another shop even had the 6300 kit for $495 at 50% off for one week, but only in selected stores (not online) ! Seems like buying an A6*00 is a complete lottery.

I was tracking the pricing on all 3 of these bodies & we jumped on the a6100 in June scoring the body AND the 16-50mmm kit lens for $600. VERY last one our local Best Buy had in stock too. Hell of deal and great example of why you should take the wait & see approach. This allowed us to get a cheap clamp arm, dummy battery, some extra batteries and charger, and a cheap 12mm manual lens with the money we saved plus only a little extra more on top. As far as this wonkiness goes it's most definitely COVID related. I got this thing for live streaming & some light KZbin work but being in that scene the plot I've seen with webcams & capture cards is pretty similar to this graph & it's all COVID related. With lockdowns & work from home anything you can hook up to ZOOM for work or Twitch for live streaming has gone through the roof. In march I was seeing normally $50-80 webcams spiking up into the hundreds. Captured cards that retail at just over $100 were going for $200-300. Wasn't long after that APS-C cameras got caught up too.

$898 for the a6400 with 16-55 kit lens on June 4th. About $960 ish or so after taxes. $898 seemed to be the average price the camera + kit lens was going for at the time; howver, Amazon was completely out of stock, so I went to Rockbrook Camera, a local place. I would have preferred to go Amazon for the points on my Amazon card, but was happy to support a local business. Plus with all the extra purchases (lenses, tripods, batteries, etc, Amazon will be fine :P).

it is likely discounts are entered for a finite time and if not continued will revert back to retail. hence the last switchback to retail for a short time.

I was going to pick up a 6100 for about $600 over the July 4th weekend deal. I was stoked but needed to wait 1 day. That next day it jumped up to $750 (body only). I was super frustrated. Luckily I did find 2 websites that are still selling it for around $680 with a kit lens. Not wanting to wait for another couple months to pick up this camera I splurged at the $680 price I found.

Since you and I live in South Texas (San Antonio...you in Austin) we aren't trapped at home in the winter time when sales dip. The spike in April seems to correspond with Spring time for the rest of the country. Perhaps timed for when the vegetation started to bloom (?). The rest is anyone's guess.

@Arthur R Prices are going high, cos demand is more now and supply is less. Supply chains are not as effective and Sony probably stopped production for some of these, during COVID situation. I could see that 6400 was on clearance sale in many local stores here in Australia, but it was really hard to see stock of the same. Lens+Camera is AUD 2600 MSRP, got it on offer for 1400AUD which is close to US prices, I think.

I no longer stress prices of latest cameras. Wait 2-3 years depending on how many upgrades there is and then go for older camera. Cameras are so good today that being 5 years behind won't make much difference. It's mainly about the lens anyway.

yep. My A5100 still takes killer raw with best primes. How ever the focusing or video are just from dinosaurus-age.

Thanks brother great advice over here in the U.K price for a6100 £580 with body -£670 with lens While the a6400 is close to £750- £800. Sometimes the a6100 is priced to close to the a6400 Sony really needs to lower the price for the a6100.
