The History of Carhartt - Hey, it’s James Pumphrey. Today, I’m breaking down how Carhartt went from Detroit workwear to a global fashion icon.
It's not a car / Donut video, but I’m trying to bring that same energy to explore why Carhartt’s long game paid off. Whether you’re into fashion or just a good story, hope you like it.
COMMENT what else you wanna see me cover.
And please LIKE & SUBSCRIBE :) love you

I have worked manual labor for over 20 years now and I'm actually glad that Carhartt is a bit of a fashion brand now. It means that my wardrobe for work is now socially acceptable for off duty and for the most part the quality at least in my experience for their pants and work shirts hasn't dropped much if at all.

I got that as well. I have been gaming since the early 90's as a whee lass on a Commodore 64 and have watched the rise and fall of a fair amount in that industry. The fall of Sega, the rise of Sony and Microsoft, the new guard acting like they are the old guard (PS and Xbox fans), the fall and rise of the PC market, the "death" of RPGs (interesting on there, it was sales analysis that pretty much killed that segment), the rise of COD and the rebirth of DOOM/boom shooter/twitch shooters, the indie game boom, and the force that is BG3. And that's not even getting into the litany of other....questionable things that have also happened in gaming. Through all that I have see so many people try to say who is a "real gamer" (tm) if you don't like their specific game or acting like the loss of popularity of one segments means that gaming is done for. Some of them I laugh at, other's I shake my when they don't realize they are the cause of their own trouble. Meanwhile I just game with my friends and talk about what ones we like.

10 years ago I barely had $30 to my name when I asked a man at a thrift store for a discount on a Carhartt jacket listed at $35. It was fraying with many holes, and clearly *very* well used. But winter was coming fast. He sold it to me for $18 and I thanked him with tears in my eyes. Little did I know that jacket would become priceless to me. . . @@daslynnter9841 Boss, I was a skater punk in the 90s (lol like I stopped). People were worrying about it back then too - and here we are today. I heard it when Pac and Mobb Deep picked it up, same when it started showing up at skateparks. Same with the concerts. And same - with Dickies. And here we are today, and neither of those two brands, Carhartt or Dickies, has changed all that much, compared to the fashion brands like Levis. Levis made the choice to go full fashion a long, long time ago. Carhartt, even in WIP, right there with Dickies - yeah, they'll do special runs and fashion cuts and prints - but they still make their bread in workwear. And hell, Carhartt's had serious competition in workwear for years anyway. It's a good time to need good workwear. We all have a ton of quality options. I've never really been a Carhartt guy (I'm a Dickies and Pointer guy), but Carhartt's never really changed. And it's kinda like James says here - it's because they never really changed anything when they went more fashion oriented - except their cuts and dyes and prints. Their quality stayed the same. And that's as it should be.

I think the main “hate” from “soft hands” buying workwear was that it would drive up prices the same way it did with outdoor brands. What a lot of “hard hands” failed to realize was that the industry for Carhartt was already there so prices didn’t need to inflate for the demand. A lot of outdoor people saw rich folk wearing Patagonia and arc’teryx and knew it was just for the clout. That drove prices through the roof. It didn’t happen the same with carhartt because there was a massive surplus of cloths from decades past that became more popular than the new stuff. Rich city folk bought hundreds of dollar jackets from the 80s and 90s and the people who needed them for work were able to still buy a new jacket for an affordable price. It really was the perfect storm. I’m born and raised in Fairbanks Alaska and can say it has always been a staple of our lively hoods to have carhartt. It’s tough, warm, and you can wear it anywhere. Need to go chop wood and 4 but go to a brewery at 5, carhartt is there for both. Great video, looking forward to more

Well said. I was hanging out with my cousin last year and said “oh cool, new Carhart?” “no it’s a few years old” I was like “wow, you need to drag that behind your car to get that carhart patina”. But it made me realize, with so many people not wearing them as workwear like I typically do it means the used market is loaded with great clothes that are already years old, but ready for a good decade of abuse by me! I love the look of a well used carhart, like you said, work at 4, brewery at 5.

Also, the “soft hands” didn’t raise the prices. The companies did but the “smooth brains” can’t complain about capitalism or they’d be commmies. The companies could be happy to have influencers wear their products while keeping it affordable for workers. Gotta make the line go up.

I think a concern that people have is that carhartt may go the way of Levi and focus on the fashion side and no longer make good workwear. Levi jeans used to be durable but now won't last a month in work conditions.

It definitely helped that it was a well-established brand with an already developed customer base for sure. Like Nike for example, a brand originally designed for sportswear, is now a fashion leader. Older "vintage" items can go for astounding amounts of money, but almost every clothing outlet, sporting goods stores, and even large resale outlets still carry the brand in bulk which stabilizes the prices. And even though pop culture has dug its claws into Nike, it still holds true to its roots as a sporting brand developing shoes, clothes, and equipment for sporting alongside their more fashionable selections.

carhartt is definitely not tough. A pair of overalls doesn't even last me a year anymore from them. The fashion craze destroyed the quality of Carhartt. Its all made extremely cheap now.

When I was a junior in college, my grandfather passed away. He was a retired Navy SEAL, influential bass fishermen, and one of the best men I have ever known. When he passed, he left behind a couple of bass pro shop gift cards. My parents gave them to me and my siblings to get something nice from him. I bought a black carhartt jacket. I had no idea the history of the name and the cultural impact that brand has. Now when I wear it, I can be reminded of my grandfather and feel a part of a large cultural movement. Thank you Paw Paw

I just bought a Carhartt hoodie sweatshirt for my kid last week. I felt like a bit of a poseur because I'm about as far away from outdoorsy or hard working as you can get, and he's going to be a freshman in college, so even less for him. But this video made me feel better about my purchase. Just feeling like an unathletic, white collar guy like me can rep cool gear too makes me happy. Thanks, James.

I’m a lineman and I wear Carhartt all the time. We love it because it simply works. I do kinda find it funny that people who don’t do blue collar wear work wear but at the same time, I have carhartt stuff that I keep nice as street wear too. At the end of the day no matter who’s buying it, the company is being supported. Which allows the brand to continue improving the workwear for people like me who need it for work.

It’s funny, but in the late 1980s the Carhartt jacket was “the“ thing to own in a very niche part of my college community - the outing club (outdoor hiking, logging, etc..). Wearing through them, and then patching them and patching over the patches was considered the cool thing to do. If only I had saved all of the ragged items covered in chainsaw bar oil and 2 stroke gas spills I would have a pretty good thing going on eBay by now. James - so glad you’re doing this. What a charming way to start off the channel.
