I think the brush makes a big difference too. I'm horrible at using a traditional straight cut polish brush but the rounded brush end on some polishes makes it way easier to get a nice line at the cuticle.

Just a tip: Use a disposable makeup sponge to layer on your glitter polishes. Just paint the glitter polish onto the end of a clean makeup sponge and gently pat it onto your nails, let dry, and repeat until you're happy with the result! The sponge kinda sucks up the clear polish, just leaving the glitter in place so it layers very well and way more evenly on the nail. Works nicely to make glitter ombré designs. 😊

12:00 that's a topper. (I think the blue holo flakie topper from Holo Taco's first anniversary) Toppers *SHOULD* always be labeled as toppers so that you don't buy them expecting full coverage, but a lot of brands don't identify toppers well enough. And you really can't tell how sparse the glitters or flakes will be on your nail because they tend to stick to the inside of the bottle.
@AceKaci
@AceKaci 3 ай бұрын
Yeah I was gonna say the same thing. That one is a topper from Holo Taco’s limited edition first anniversary collection. If you compared it to Frost Light which is supposed to be full coverage in 2-3 coats, it looks completely different from the topper which isn’t supposed to cover everything. Maybe a follow up video explaining the difference between cover colors, jellies, and toppers could help? It is hard to tell them apart just looking at the bottle. Holo Taco is good about advertising them correctly, though they could indicate on the bottles better, but a lot of other brands don’t really say, so it can cause confusion.

What do you mean by topper? I assume that it is supposed to go over a solid polish color?? Is that how you use a topper correctly?
@lestranged
@lestranged 3 ай бұрын
@@palestar828 Yes. Toppers go over a full coverage polish. They are usually shimmers, glitters or flakeys in a clear base so that you can see the color of the base polish.

I have a trick that I've used for years. To find out how opaque a nail polish will be shake it and turn it on its side. Look for the air bubble. That layer on the inside of the bottle (left by the bubble) will give you an idea of how the first coat will look. If that air bubble in the bottle is hard to see then the polish will be very pigmented. Hope this helps!🤗

I can get a general idea by looking at the edges of the bubble, when the bottle is standing upright. If the edges cut off abruptly then it's opaque. If they fade a little before they cut off then it's more sheer. I hope that made sense.

If it is hard to see it will be more pigmented (more color)? It wouldn't be the other way around since it is hard to see??

People comment on how perfect I paint my nails, and I always say it's because I use polishes that are much more forgiving; glitter, metallic flakes, jelly/flakes, shimmer/linear holo. I almost exclusively wear those. Maybe my lack of practice makes cremes more difficult, but they do seem to be the most challenging to perfect. I'll mention that baby blue holo taco glitter was meant to be a topper. That one was from 2020.

I do the layering different colours for my nails too, I have a fast dry periwinkle blue that I like to do one layer of then top it with a layer of copper glitter nail polish that has a prismatic effect so it looks like a rainbow when the light hits it at the right angle, I diluted the glitter polish a lot with a bottle of shiny top coat too so it was less thick and flowed better and would show a bit of the nice blue nail polish underneath it easily.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong with polishes, I've been using them for over 30 years but never could put on a second layer, no matter how long I let it dry, the second layer ALWAYS stays soft for hours, and by that time it's smudged or scratched because... well try not to move your hands or use them for hours. 2 minutes to dry? I've even waited a full day to put on a second layer, always the same problem. Used different brands, with me it just doesn't work. What do I do wrong? I have to switch to gel polishes, hopefully that would work but what a shame, I have 3 boxes full of nail polishes and there are always new pretty colors to buy...

Forgive my interjection, you need to use a decent quick-dry top coat - I used to be fully committed to Seche Vite, however I’m now on my third bottle of Glisten & Glow Top Coat and wouldn’t use anything else. From my own experience I do not recommend any others than the two mentioned. It dries super quick to a reasonable level, although I would still go easy with your manicure for the next 30mins or so. Also, I only paint one hand at a time, i.e. I’m left handed, so I start on my right hand, do a base coat, (Orly Bonder for the win!), give it one minute, then start on my colour. Take your time to be precise, and by the time you’ve done your first coat on all five nails, you are ready to start your next coat and so forth, I give maybe one minute extra for the final colour coat before going in with the top coat when the nail is touch dry. I find with both Seche Vite and Glisten & Glow, they set quick enough that I’m ready to commence on the other hand within minutes. (The only reason I stopped using Seche Vite is because there can be a little shrinkage, but that’s me being fussy, it is a great product and super quick drying- I think it’s designed to be applied when your colour is not quite dry 🤷🏼‍♀️). I hope that’s helpful 👍🏽☺️

I don't think there's any reason to? Stainless steel mixing balls are to prevent polish from getting too goopy when exposed to air or separating if it sits still for too long. Since gel cures in UV light and the bottles are opaque, it won't dry like regular nail polish and will remain liquid.

Personally, I think it all depends on the quality of the polish formula especially how well they auto level. Some cremes, you can do in one coat, others, it's best to apply thin coats and build up until you get the nice even finish you are looking for. As far as nudes, jellies can be easier than cremes and if you want the solid appearance, just use a blurring base coat.

😬why a man......men don't wear nail polish. I would love to see your beautiful colours on a woman's nails, where it belongs. Xxx❤

First time viewer. I understand that you’re making a nail color tip point, but you bragged about your polish skills. On every nail you missed the left edge of the nail. I’d be an unhappy customer if my nail tech left my nails like that.

I am 73 years old and never had nails to polish. As a child I bit them as i got older they split , and chipped. Now I am using a Sally Henson cuticle oil and they are growing. Your video is encouraging to me.

With cremes I do the three stroke method. Stroke down the middle, then one on each side, and let it dry. Then repeat. Love the use of HT.

I never thought a shimmery nail polish might dry faster and be easier to apply than a creme. No wonder I'm having a harder time, since I always use cremes and am new to applying polish. This was so helpful, thank you!

Excellent tips! I was literally laughing out loud when you put the 2nd coat on the pretty red-ish glitter polish towards the end of the video. I simultaneously said "That's pretty" when you did! It made me cackle! 🤣 Thank you for sharing your expertise. 💅💖💖💖

The blue "glitter" you demo is not supposed to be used as a polish. It is one of the three first anniversary "flakie holo tacos" designed as a topper to add over a base colour. Also, all the Holo Taco polishes are designed to be finished off with a quick dry glossy topcoat, which really changes the sparkle and overall look of the polishes!

There is one thing that I ALWAYS do when buying nail polishes, is checking for swatch pics but especially live swatching videos since you can actually see how the polish behaves and how it looks at 1st, 2nd and even maybe 3rd layer and also how different toppers looks on the top of the polish :) Then also swatch pics since those does show how the polish looks on the nail and often it's an huge different from the bottle itself. When spoke of glitters and I spotted that you have some Zoya polishes (I absolutely love them too, have a lot of them!) - take a look at their pixie dust polishes, then we can talk glitter :D

Yes! Swatch videos are a must for me, especially when some brands don't disclose the use of fake nails, blurring base coats, or other coats of color underneath. Or if they don't disclose how many coats it takes to achieve the opacity in their official swatches.

With standard nail polish (as in, non gel polish) the fewer strokes the better. One stroke down the middle and one on each side. Too many strokes cause a mess and those brush strokes show. This is important especially with the 2nd coat.

Hey Susie, can we do an episode on nails with people who have developed allergies to monomer . I notice hard gel i react less then acrilic. And are there any allergy friendlier brand on gel, acrilics, and/or gel polish?

Another tip for folks new to applying polish, is to grab yourself a cleanup brush. You just dip it in acetone and cleanup any flooding etc!

Suzie this was such an awesome video to watch. Great information. I remember back in the 80’s doing the three stroke method of applying nail polish. One down each side and one down the middle. Would this technique still be a benefit with the the cream polishes so we don’t see the brush strokes in your opinion?

Can you do a video on getting nail polishes to dry faster?
@Kaeracter
@Kaeracter 3 ай бұрын
The only ways are thin coats and using a quick dry top coat. There are also quick dry drops and drying sprays. But those are secondary to making sure your coats aren't thick and using a quality quick dry top coat. The best quick dry top coats are from indie brands - KBShimmer, Monarch, Polished For Days, Cuticula, Glisten & Glow, etc.

I always thought I was a non-frosty girl! But then I began seeing so many amazing colours available these days! The rest is history! 😉 Also, they make a great base colour for a holographic topper! I love using Cirque Colors We Trippy for that 😊

I LOVE glitter, so now I have an excuse to get more glitter polish. 🤣 I stopped wearing any acrylics/fake nails a few years ago but suck at painting my natural nails cause they're so short. But I'll keep practicing with glitters.

Love the use of holo taco, but I really don’t know if the white was a good example of what normal whites look like because it is much more solid than many others out on the market. Edit: the one at 12 is a top coat rather than a glitter polish meant for coverage 🙂 so the way its used it over the blue is what this one is more meant for
