I am an R5 user. I plan to keep this camera until it can’t be fixed. The picture quality is excellent. The features are impressive. The price will come down so you can get a good used version. The lenses I’ve collected makes it almost impossible to leave Canon. It’s glass plus body that counts.

I damaged mine in the first year but luckily it can be fixed. I used the R5 straight from a cold camera bag to 107F during a heatwave in Cyprus and the viewfinder cracked from a thermal fracture. It leaked some black LED liquid so has a small black circle on the screen but functions fine. Hoping to get it fixed soon but be warned about using it from the cold to extreme heat.

This video is incredibly misleading, who is your audience or target? All the issues that you mention seems to be for people that are just starting in photography, if anyone wants quality and performance it will come at a price. Any camera or drone with even entry level professional specs will required a better set up and more space, its expected if you are buying a professional equipment that it has professional needs to be met.

Thanks for your input, Maximo. I have defined my target audience as people that are ready to make a large purchasing decision. Whether they be beginners with large budgets or pros that are in the market for the R5 they may as well jump to the R5C or the Canon cinema line. When I purchased my R5 I wish I would have known about all the surrounding expenses that came along with it so that I could have prepared and budgeted more smartly. So to sum it up the video is for people with large budgets but may not have years of data management/processing experience. In that case, I think the R6 Mark II may be a better option. As I explained in the video I appreciate your thoughts. Where can we find your work?

@@TMVVisualMedia I'm not looking to misjudge or undermined your work, apologies if it's the case. If I were to recommend or give advice to someone with a large budget would be to focus more on lenses rather than cameras, with the price of an R5 I would go for a Canon R8 and a Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L given that lenses make a whole world of difference and most likely will outlive the camera. About my work, Im quite new to publishing my work, and still working in my website and social media accounts, but is still interested let me know.

I agree with this comment. Sounds like you are not a professional. You are a hobbyists who doesn’t need a high end piece of equipment. You are just bashing and hating on a camera that you specifically don’t need. Also, sounds like you did absolutely zero research before purchasing the R5. Just an all around terrible take. My rather cheap M1 MacBook (~900$) Air easily edits my files (raw photos and 4K videos). When you buy an item this expensive for its stellar image quality, bigger file sizes are just what you get. I upgraded from the R6 to the R5 and I am blown away by how much more details I can get now (esp. for wildlife). Also, cRaw is highly underrated and saves a lot (!) of space.

You sir deserve a pinned comment! Thanks for the comment. I have to say that perhaps to some 900 dollars is "cheap" Let's say you don't own a nearly one thousand dollar computer but a generation or two back. I suppose my point was to highlight that it can get pricey quickly. Don't get me wrong as I highlighted in the video. I love my R5 and I love my R6. I still own both but the R6 files are so much easier to render and manage. I also am blown away by the image quality. Thanks again for the comment!

Love the R5…and now I can switch to the negatives. I shoot cRaw but I learned from the DxO support team that some of their software only works for full raw files. And now the biggie: I never had a freeze-up the way other people did. Their screen would show the last picture but the buttons wouldn’t work. My freeze-up was a failure on the flippy screen that short circuited. It appeared to be blank but was glowing blue in a darkened room. The screen got wildly hot. Couldn’t turn it off. I sent Canon $400 for new screens on the back, top, and viewfinder, and a complete new motherboard. You really know your stuff.

Waiting for the mk2. I love my R6. The speed and AF opened a new world for me. I have good lenses now 85mm, 28-70 f2 for everyday shots, 100-500 with extender for wildlife. The only thing I really feel like I want over the R6 is more mp and faster video for slow motion but I want to see where the R5 mk2 lands with pricing. If its like the R3 or sony A1 I'll be looking for a regular R5 instead.

If you can wait for the R5II I would say don't buy it, but if you need the mp for wildlife or landscape now is a great time to get it with the discount, as far as mp and your pc not handling it then its time to upgrade, don't knock the camera for you being cheap same thing for drive space or use c-raw instead. You get what you pay for is the bottom line Sony A7rv 3899 new Nikon coming out going to be around same price range. If you want to go up R3 5500 down R6II 2500 its pretty simple.

Thank you. I share your point of view the r5 is a money pit. The increased quality is beyond the needs of most. People zoom the pixels on their computer and are wowed. But look at pictures at a normal size or even print them and the gain is very marginal. I contemplate an r6 mark II so the whole photography process is not a chore. My pics are for me and will never go to an art gallery. I am glad you did that video. Too many reviewers make review for the top 1% of pros rather the average enthusiast. You balanced the added quality of the r5 with the added cost and complexity it brings.

Great video, this is good information for the FOMO crowd because KZbinrs will sell this these cameras and don’t get into the in’s and out’s of the money part not the price of the cameras but the money around having a flag ship camera body 4000$+ plus all the upgrades you will have to do to have things running right this is true and that’s a good thing to know where your pockets are especially if you get into this world of photography. Are you or can you make this money back in what you are doing with the camera in a small amount of time or in another case you may have the income we’re you’re not hurting at all. My three year old Imac (pre the M chips) handles the files and photoshop fine. The 60mg plus files are big sure, but storage is getting so cheap . Firstly great video, everything you’ve mentioned is true. I just picked up my R5 from B&H since they put it up for $3,400 along with a battery grip. My only reasoning was that canon does not offer discounts on newly launched products. I don’t think I’d be spending that extra money on the Mii version even if it came out and that’s just me. I mainly bought it as it’s compatible with the dual fisheye lens and i wanted to explore 180 videos. Lastly the lenses are so damn expensive, if you’re getting newly into the canon eco system, waiting for the Mark 2 version isn’t going to make sense. Right now I’m struggling with buying the right lenses but so far I’ve ordered 100mm 16mm 50mm 1.8 and I was torn between the 14-35 f4 and the 15-35 2.8 and I’m waiting for the 5.2 dual fisheye to come in stock as well. Lmk if what I did is right or not 😂 Overall, picking these up has been extremely expensive. Not to mention the CF express cards costed almost as much as the R50 or most POS cameras! Absurd. All in all it’s a great camera to step into, the new camera cannot have a better video codec for lower file sizes nor will it take noticeably better images.

Thanks for the review... you made some good points but there are a few "issues" you mentioned that I don't think will be applicable to many photographers... unless of course the R5 would be their very first higher-end camera, which is probably not very likely. 1st: as others have mentioned, most reasonably modern PC/Macs will be able to handle the R5 output just fine. Again, not sure there are that many serious photographers don't already have a decent computer, so it's probably not going to be a major consideration for most considering the R5. 2nd: mass hard drive storage is dirt cheap right now. for external HDD, you can find close to $10 per TB at times and even the speedier 7200 RPM internal HDDs aren't much more than that. Now, I do agree about the in-camera storage. I have a collection of older 32 & 64GB SD cards that are not going to cut it when i upgrade from my current 6D, so yeah, getting a few newer gen SD cards will add some to your overall expense. 3rd: I get that you and a lot of people love their R6 M2 and yes, it's almost $1k cheaper, but it's also not in the same stratosphere as the R5 with only half the MP count, among other things... you get what you pay for lol. 4th: will be interesting to see happens with the eventual R5 M2. I'm not holding out to buy that when released, but was originally considering waiting for the M2 release to buy a M1 at a discounted price. However, with the current deal running at a few places, especially if you are combining with a lens purchase... not really sure prices will ever go lower than this for new (maybe they will but i doubt it).
@TMVVisualMedia
@TMVVisualMedia Жыл бұрын
Fantastic points! Thanks for that well-thought-out comment. I certainly agree with a few of your counterpoints. My first camera was the M50 and within a year I was buying the R6 and less than 6 months I was buying the R5. Before that, I had never touched an interchangeable lens camera. I owned a 500-dollar computer used for Lightroom Classic and basic email and spreadsheets. To say that a MacBook is cheap is a little off-base. I think the M1 would be sufficient for the files of the R5 and video, proxies will be needed but an M1 is about 1000 bucks. I suppose we do live in a world where when we can afford the payments then we can afford the item. For me, it was a massive shock. It's possible that my scenario is not common. But perhaps my video will better prepare someone that may be in a situation similar to mine. Thanks again for the view and the comment!

I would use proxies while editing. Do you currently use proxies? I use premiere pro, and I also use proxies. It makes a 1080p version of your footage that is easy for your machine to work with. You can do all the edits and everything. Then when you are about to export the final version the program switches the footage and adds your edits to the 4k version. I have been a long time Canon shooter graduating from the DSLRs to mirrorless. Now having two R3s and one R6ii, I have added the R5 on a recent purchase from a friend. what a difference in photo quality 45 MP delivers! However, the R5 control settings and handling characteristics are somewhat different than the R3 and R6ii. Plus, a 512 GB CFexpress card is highly recommended. Then again, all three camera models have their differences, and it takes a bit of new memory coordination to know what camera I am holding. Based on all three models, I tend to use all three as if using the R6ii and knowing there will be minor variations in use. As an action sports photographer, using the R5 was a bit mind boggling, but I love the extra MP count on the R5 sensor for much tighter image cropping in post. The Canon R5 is a great camera whenever high-resolution imagery is a must when doing commercial work.

R5 Mark II and the R5 price drop is the best reason to postpone a R5 purchase. Two years ago I made the jump from a 90D to the EOS R. Even though it was not the fastest nor does it have all the bells and whistles of the R5, the 30 Megapixel sensor still delivers stunning images that are on par with any other camera in the Canon R series. I might upgrade to the R5 Mark II next year but for now, the R5 is too close to being lapsed by the Mark II version to make it a viable purchase option.

As a professional I understand more than most, I shoot jpg and cRAW, though I rarely use RAW files as unless there is a massive tonal range the camera is quicker at producing jpgs than I am, RAW is overrated. Incidentally so are megapixels when most of us do not have a lens than resolves more than 25mp anyway. I am using an older laptop most of the time, though I am not using the R5 for video, you just have to consider time limitations when using Topaz.

Interesting that I just happened upon your channel today, just as I was considering an R5! I was Nikon person for years, and still have my D750 with several lenses. However, when digital came into play, I got into the Fuji system for its much smaller and lighter cameras, but especially its lenses. However, with 2 and 5 year old very active grandkids, the Fujis are pretty challenged when it comes to reliable autofocus, and thus my looking into the Canon R6-2 and also the R5. As you predicted, B&H now has the R5 with a $500 discount, and are even throwing in the battery grip! I will never pay the many thousands of dollars for the expensive Canon glass, so I would probably just consider getting the R5 with 24-105 f4 lens which can be had for a $200 discount as a kit. Any suggestions, recommendations? Is the R6-2 still a better choice at regular price? Smaller files, great low light, but it's not an R5, and the R5 is highly discounted.

Thanks for the awesome question. That's a really tough choice. But I think it comes down to your workflow and what sort of supporting gear you have. I would consider things like: what sort of editing am I doing and what software I'm using. Can my computer handle 1000 raw images in a row? Among other things mentioned in the video But you mentioned your grandkids, is the camera going to be primarily used for family and personal stuff or will it be a piece of gear that you make money with? If it's the latter and you want it for family and personal stuff the R6 II is plenty of camera. I say all that to say, the R5 is a whole lot of cameras and it's on a crazy sale right now. But is it more camera than you need? I don't think I can answer that for you. Let me know if I can help any further. Happy to help. @@TMVVisualMedia That was the fastest response ever! Thank you! So, if you didn't have either camera, and you had a choice today to get the R6-2 for $2499 or the R5 with battery grip for $3399, and you could only have one, which one would you get? I would use it mostly for grandkid pictures and video due to its great autofocus (vs Fuji), and I don't mind the extra cost of the R5 if it's a significantly better camera. Also, would the 24-105 f4 lens take advantage of the R5, as it would probably be the only Canon lens that I would get for quite a long time. My M1 Pro MacBook woulds be able to handle the files, and I have 18TB Seagate drives for family folders, with backups. I'm retired, so no professional work, and I would continue to use my Fujis for trips, etc. as autofocus is not a big issue then, and I much prefer the significantly less bulk. Thanks again!

Happy to help. The R5 with a battery grip will likely be the last camera you will ever buy. It's also future-proof enough that you may gift it to a loved one in 15-20 years. If given the choices you listed and I had the budget I would get the R5. As for the lens. The 24-105 f4 is on my wish list. Its low on my wish list but it's an L series lens and they come with superior quality and ultimate optical performance. Best of the best. I also own several lenses. I love the RF line up.

Hi! Thank you for posting this video. It’s extremely helpful. I would like to get a second opinion about the R6 Mark II. I just purchased one today at Best Buy as I’m upgrading from a EOS 70D. I am starting a pet photography business and my original plan was to get the Canon 5d mark IV, but the sales person at Best Buy suggested the R6 Mark II if not the R5. I explained to him that I take both regular portraits and action shots of dogs running or any pet that doesn’t sit still 😅, but needed a camera with a faster shutter speed, better autofocus, etc. I’m also on a budget. My problem is I keep wondering if I made a good choice or if I should’ve looked into something different. I love and will only use canon. But I would be extremely grateful for any advice you might have? Also I apologize for the lengthy comment (paragraph) and if none of it makes sense. I work with dogs for a living and I’m exhausted 😅

My instructor uses a RF 24-70mm f/2.8 but that unfortunately I can’t fit into my budget, unless I purchase a used one. Is there an EF lens similar to that one I can use? What I don't understand about your video are the reasons you gave not to buy an R5. This reasons you gave aren't valid. Taking up too much space , being expensive to store your files and the price of the body. In case you didn't know, that applies to every camera that competes with the R5. They are all expensive and they all take up storage due to their files. And of course the R5 will drop in price, its what happens to every camera once it ages. Now if you were to tell me that this camera isn't worth buying due to its ergonomics or customizable menu or its ease of use then I would say ok you have a valid point.

I use a 2TB CFExpress and the files are well editable in Davinci Resolve 18.5 (with an AMD 9 7950X, 128GB DDR5, some ssd's 4-Gen and a 4090RTX). I am not a pro, but I like sharp videos with nice colors. And for me 8K RAW Videos are noticeable sharper than any other video mode in the R5, and I like 12Bit colors more than 10Bit colors. Ok I sold my R5, but only because I want 8K RAW 60fps and the R5 has only 8K RAW 30fps, (and reselling now brings more than when the R5 MKII will be released). I still have my R5C and I am waiting for the R5 MKII or (depending on the price) maybe the R1. Now as I only left with the R5C, I ordered a R50 just to have something to record when I want to make a clip of my A-Cam. Big advantage of the R5 is the handling for photo/video: can be configured to switch instantly with the M-Fn button and the mode button is on the right side as well, giving access to specific modes the user wants to see (all the rest can be disabled), all visible on the display, no need to move away from the EVF. This feature may worth it alone if it means taking the shot instead of missing it. A hybrid camera is best if all of its capabilities are quickly accessible to the user and this is where the R6 is not the best. The R6 mode dial is filled with stuff that one does not need, and the Mark II isn't much better with the photo/video switch on the left, just awkward to get to while looking through the viewfinder. They've still haven't made it as good as the R5 was, so moments might be missed, and the R5C isn't great with the delay either. (they've promised to improve that via a future firmware, but still not optimal.) Also make me a bit worried about the R5 Mark II being a backwards step for ergonomics. For video the same recording options are still there as in the R6, so it does not necessarily take up any more space (except 4k120p of course, but that is also a big differentiator) I wish there was an option for a lower-res raw stills like they did on some DSLRs, then the R6 series wouldn't really have any advantage there. But for wildlife, being able to go to APS-C crop in stills or a video can be a noticeable advantage.

You're going to lose your mind when you find out you can set the red record button to "custom 1". The Mfn button goes to "custom 3". I have my record button set to 60 fps so I can capture slow-mo and my mfn button to 24fps. It's instant. Maybe I should do a video about that.

Most pics will be wildlife, landscape, pics of my dogs for practice!!! You have 24-70mm f/2.8 L, or 70-200mm f/2.8, or 24-105mm f/4 l not sure which is most versatile. If you can secure a new R5 body for under 3k it's totally a no brainer. But it might be worth to wait for all the people that will be upgrading. If you're into buying used gear from reputable dealers I think you could score one for the low 2000s. R5 is my least used camera to be honest. Even though I still love it and will probably have it forever.

Honestly, have the M3 Max laptop to support processing, and 20 TB of NAS storage so don’t mind the downsides in that respect. I’ve had the R6 which I loved, and currently have the r8 which I love. Debating because because the R8 or R6/R6II don’t work with an Astro ecosystem I got, even though that’s a small part of my usage. The R5 fits in… but the hesitation is the proximity to the R5II release! Looks like canon has refurbs for close to $2k, might do that ! Biggest fear for me is the less effective AF of the R5…

Thats a great point. I believe color reproduction for both systems is superb. The real color differences I have heard from other users is based off of the lens options. Both systems shoot C-log3 and I love the video that comes out of the R5. But the file size is rather large.

@@TMVVisualMedia Thanks for you sharing! I have R6 mark II. My wife use it for photos, but I use it mostly for videoconference/livestream in 4K/24P. The main question for me is still open: whether R5 will provide better (sharpness, colours, focus) in livestream in 4K/24P? From what I know both use oversampling. R5 does it from 8K, while R6 does it from 6K. But is it visible in 4K/24P?
@TMVVisualMedia
@TMVVisualMedia Жыл бұрын
Where you will see the difference is in the megapixel count. The 45 megapixel vs the 24 megapixels is a massive jump. I'm not familiar with live streaming and how the quality of the stream is affected by latency and internet connection. From just a normal video recording perspective there is a noticeable difference in the amount of reframing and cropping I can do with both cameras. The R5 has the advantage over the R6 in every category. With the exception of file and data management.

@@TMVVisualMedia Ok, I understand it. So let's assume, you set in both cameras format of recording video in 4K/24P. Will you see the difference in video file? Sorry my questions are non professional. :) But I try to understand the difference for specific situation :)
@TMVVisualMedia
@TMVVisualMedia Жыл бұрын
I think to the naked eye you won't see a major difference. But 24mp vs 45mp when it comes to processing and flexibility. Do I think that the flexibility is worth an extra 1000 dollars more. Personally I think so. But what and how you create is up to you. I am uncertain how you value that sort of stuff. But if you want the absolute best possible image and you have the budget. I would absolutely recommend the R5 or the R5C. They are the highest megapixel camera Canon has to offer currently. The R5 Mark II is rumored to have more megapixels and more premium features. I also think that the average viewer or client will not care about your megapixel count, however. As long as the video and audio are good. Let me know if you have any questions. Happy to help.

The R5 was my first mirrorless camera and it was fantastic in a lot of ways. But being a bird shooter... mostly small birds that I was trying to fill my frame with, I ended up having to crop a TON > even with my 800mm F11 lens ! I even tried the crop mode, which drops the MP's to only 17mp, but that left me little room for cropping. I ended up renting the 33mp R7. This lens puts twice as many MP's on my subjects, in fact, no other body, from any other manufacturer, packs as many MP's on a crop sensor. I did so well with it, I ordered one before retuning the rental. Then, my R5 sat on the dresser collecting dust. I started to feel guilty that my R5 was getting no play, so I tried taking it out > and was very disappointed :( For my purposes, as it turns out, the $1500 R7 was just a much better choice. So I sold the R5, bought a second R7 as a backup + the 600 F11 + the RF 100-400 + paid my rent, and never looked back. What I dream of nowadays, is a pro level crop sensor camera, or, some pretty big upgrades with the R7 Mk II whenever it comes out. But yes, for a lot of other photography genres, the R5 is fantastic. Mine used to glitch and lockup a lot, but I suspect that had more to do with the grip, than the body.

Don't let the 20mp fool you. The camera is a premium piece of equipment. Its a full frame sensor meaning that the mp capture a ton of detail and produce some spectacular results. Its my opinion that the original R6 is one of Canon best prosumer cameras. Its fantastic. I sometimes prefer the 20mp images I get from my r6 than the 45mp I get from my r5.
