To everyone complaining about the audio quality from the front microphone of the media mod: THIS IS SO IT WILL WORK IN WINDY ENVIRONMENTS. It is because they have put a high pass/low cut filter on it. This will remove lower frequencies, which is done because this is where wind buffeting will ruin the audio. Notice how he makes a comparison on the beach: the built-in microphone is useless in the wind, but the mod's front microphone works beautifully in the wind. This is basically the oldest trick in the book when it comes to professional audio recording. It makes a lot of sense to do this.

@@JorgeAcostaPesca For that matter, if it were able to pop up a message, then they could take it a step further and just let the GoPro turn it off automatically whenever the HDMI is in use. Taking it another bit further, it could check if stabilization is on or off, make sure it's of for HDMI, then restore stabilization to its previous setting when HDMI disconnects. One way or another, it would be good if GoPro fixes this with a firmware update.

That tip about the baseplace changing sides is really good information. They most likely changed it because it's nearly impossible to open the battery door when mounted. The door swings into the the thumb screw. Mounted on the the other side, that wouldn't happen. I've been getting frustrated with my H8 because of this but it's good to know there's a solution. I'll have to pay attention to which side the screw is on for my mounts.

Sorry but.... wtf was GoPro thinking with this? Every single video I've seen of it so far, just reveals how HORRID the microphone quality is.... like.... the GoPro by itself was legit just better hands down. When the audio sample stuff first started, and I heard the audio, I honestly went "wow, that sounds insanely good computer to all the other Media Mod videos I've seen!" and then I read the text at the bottom and realized it was the stock GoPro mics................ why release a 'Media Mod' that doesn't actually do anything good? They really should have just released the 'case' which plugged into the USB port, and at the verrrrrrrrry top of the case, where the Cold Shoe is, simply have a tiny little raised bump or a cut out or something, which housed the 3.5mm jack.... make it as slim and stream lined as possible! That way no matter what sort of situation you are in, an external mic could be plugged in no problem. No one would have to deal with a "well it sticks out straight from the back so now i can't mount the camera on the front of my helmet cause it just doesn't fit" and no one would have to deal with "well it sticks out really far from the side of the camera so now I gotta worry about it snagging on stuff".... OH! WAIT! BETTER YET!......... just fucking let ANY FREAKING USB TYPE C ADAPTER WORK!.... Its honestly not that difficult of a thing to do... the freaking Type C jack has contacts SPECIFICALLY for that! Just let the freaking audio be an analog input and PRESTO DONE!... But nah, GoPro just wants everyone's wallet... That's all they really care about. Tiny, almost meaningless updates to their hardware, but still expecting a huge price tag....... smh

The 'Powered mic' selection is for condenser mics not for the Rode. The Rode Wireless is a dynamic mic, yes it has to be powered (because it's wireless) but it's not powered in the sense that a condenser mic is. The voltage on the Rode is less than 5 v, a real 'powered mic' uses a much higher voltage (24 to 48). The GoPro should be set to standard mic when using the Rode wireless.
@keithdear60694 жыл бұрын
Nicely done, but if I understand you correctly, you said that the 'stereo' setting was designed to activate the front and rear mics simultaneously. Surely this isn't stereo. I would suggest that one chooses stereo if the 3.5mm jack input is used for a stereo mic (att. to the top cold shoe). I've yet to try out my existing, quality Sony stereo mic - as I haven't got the shoe adaptor, but I wonder if a line level attenuator cable LN2Mic-ZoomMH4N will improve the sound quality. We'll see in a few days when I get the shoe adaptor!

@thePretendgineer4 жыл бұрын
Unpowered doesn't mean it doesn't get any power at all, it means it doesn't get any EXTRA power. All 3.5mm mic connections get some voltage.
@zyxyuv16504 жыл бұрын
@@thePretendgineer No they don't "get some voltage", you don't know the difference between DC and AC so stop guessing randomly if you don't know. The microphones *output* low AC current at microphone line level. Running voltage through the leads will create a DC offset and damage the signal. Microphones can support plug-in power using DC bias voltage or with DC via a 3/4-lead mini jack.

Thanks for the video! You're thorough, and thanks for always wearing a proper microphone! I just bought the Hero10 and was wondering if you can still see what you're shooting on the rear display while outputting HDMI in "Live" mode. I'm considering this Mod and would love to output HDMI to a LiveU transmission unit. Thanks in advance!

Very good explanation of the GoPro and accessories. Thank you.

The 3.5 in is the star of the show but I just got a Zoom H1n and started recording audio separately. It would be nice to be combined but I think my $90 spent on the H1n was better money spent vs $80 for this. I don't need the HDMI

Yup, I normally use a Zoom H1N as well. And that works great for a lot of things. However, where it gets a bit messier is when you have tons of GoPro clips over a longer period of time - for example 20-30 clips over the course of a day. In that scenario, having the audio baked into the files makes life way easier in post.

@@Dcrainmaker I agree with you there, if you're going to have multiple clips it gets old after awhile syncing them

Thank you for this very helpful look at the Media Mod. I, too, use the Hero8 for occasional journalistic applications. For best stabilization in close, tight shots I'm thinking a cage. For best audio I'm thinking to use my Sony PCM-M10 on the cage and run audio into the GoPro through the 3.5mm port. For lighting, a Manfrotto LED. Altogether much bigger than the GoPro solo, but still potentially a tiny, very capable journalist rig with great audio and a lot of light.

Am I missing something on 9:39?! Text says No Media mod, but you are using the external rode mic...

Good catch, leftover title. Wish I could fix it. Thanks!

Just got mine in the mail and it works really, really nicely with the Wireless Go set up for my cooking videos. It even fell straight into a batch of ice cream base and survived! I'm sad to see about using it for camlink recording... That had me excited.

Thank you for your review Those are all important information especially the HDMI I wish you can do a review about using it with OBS for live streaming and recording

This is why I’m here. Any info on HMDI out to OBS?

I bought a similar case to the media mod called a Small Rig GoPro cage or something. It's sick. Pretty similar to the media mod but vastly different design. I like the small rig cage better overall but it's missing the 3.5mm jack which is a major downer.

I just want to try it for easy use. Quality can be tweaked in editing. Looking into the Mic Mod, light, and screen for traveling.

So for me, being able to use to 3.5mm jack to plug into my mixer and have the mini HDMI adapter connect to my Elgato Camlink for OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) for live playback. Worth the $75. Although I'm using it as an secondary overhead camera to capture live drums! In my opinion, worth the adapter for what I'm doing. Seems to be strictly circumstantial as to when it would be valuable to someone else. Granted I would have been happier if they just made the unit in that size and have all the necessary perks in a single purchase haha Guess you can't have your cake and eat it too!

You could do a tutorial with The Insta360 ONE R with the 1 inch Leica mod, testing the same microphones and make a thorough comparison with the GoPro hero 8 Black, with respect to which of the two cameras is better according to the configurations it brings each for the use of external mic ???
@ZenGeekDad4 жыл бұрын
You make a great case for when to use a GoPro: the virtually infinite DoF means no focusing errors, lag, or hunting. And for that verite-style handheld work, GoPro 8's intense attention to image stabilization pays off. (I say this as someone who mostly doesn't find a fit for GoPro in my work.) Question: did you shoot the indoor bit on another GoPro, or on your mirrorless? The indoor video at 4K is very crisp.

Thank you for sharing detailed sound test. Could you please also share how to set Polarpro ND filters along with media mod.
@Dcrainmaker4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately those aren't compatible with the Media Mod, the two plastic pieces overlap.

GoPro really needs a mic set up that don’t compromise the waterproof ability . Something that Bluetooths to the GoPro without the need to plug anything in. 👍
@jaredjaynes4 жыл бұрын
Yeah since microphones are waterproof this would make sense. 😜

Sena has a bt adapter but it only works up to the hero4. Am guessing it just wasn’t worth their time or money trying to keep up with each model change

The cheap directly plugged in lav mic sounded the best.

Do you think the additional screen will add much value to your vlogging? A front screen is a great feature on the DJI for quick action shots and underwater however this clearly won't work with the 8 and media mod as its not waterproof.
