I’ve been searching for a review that would show the optical bokeh of an external lens. This is what I needed to see. One of the downsides of the iPhone portrait mode is that it has massive shutter lag so no going for event photography.

Hi Heather! Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, it helps me understand what kinds of needs people have! I will take your comment to heart and keep you in mind as I look into products out there that could work for someone like you. I used to be an optician for three years so I'm familiar with a few people who had vision challenges. I myself had visual challenges too (-7.75 or so in both eyes) but I was fortunate enough to be a candidate for LASIK. I will keep an eye out and keep you in mind! If I find something I'll definitely review it!

It is a bummer that the Moment app does not exist on android anymore. You can read about the story here: 9to5google.com/2020/02/29/moment-pro-camera-app-android-exclusive/ The good news is that there is a lot of development on Android in terms of photo and video, so there are alternatives. Here are the apps that I would recommend instead of the Moment app for photos: Filmic Firstlight - It is a pretty intuitive and feature-packed photo app, however, you will need to pay for it Hedgecam 2 - It can take photos as well as video.

This is the first time I've watched one of your video's and it was a very well thought out and informative video! I have a Pixel 3A and I have considered buying some Moment lenses but have held off because I have taken some great photos with the Pixel's regular lens. Best wishes Duane

Thank you for your kind words Duane! I have a friend who is part of the team that designs the Pixels and from what he's told me and sown me, I have to agree with you. With the direction of where cell phone cameras are going, they are mounting three or more lenses to their phones, and in every new phone they have not only the standard lens, but a wide and telephoto lens, which does negate the original purposes of the Moment attaching lenses. One can argue that it can enhance your photos by adding more "light" or more zoom to it, but I've seen my friend take photos with Pixel and they come out really good just from the Pixel's camera. Thank you again for posting your feedback! My hope is that people see that although the lenses are great, they are becoming more and more unnecessary with how amazing photo quality of phones like the Pixel.

@@jsmoothsalsa Thank you for your reply!! Not many KZbin channels ever reply back so by replying that was a class act on your part!! I loved my Pixel 3A but recently switched to a LG V60 (which was a mistake) and some day I'll go back to Pixel. I still use my Pixel 3A for pictures & video. I figure for the price of Moment lenses, I could put that money towards a new Pixel phone (since leaks suggest the Pixel 6 with three lenses will sell over $1000). Best wishes Duane

Disappointment due to unrealistic expectations. I am always pleased with add-on lenses because I never think of them as replacements for more capable cameras. The phone cameras are frustrating as main cameras, however, considering their limited abilities they do an amazing job. But they are never as good as a proper camera and its manual controls. Nor are they as rugged as proper action cameras. However, the best use of phone cameras is for those places that prohibit cameras. They rarely forbid phones. Thus I can get photographs and video at tourist places and sports events where I am not allowed to use a camera. The tele lens, in particular, helps get closer to the action, and the wide or fisheye get wider shots when too close to the action or in a cramped space. The only lens I find that is rarely needed is the macro lens. But from bull fighting in Mexico, to beautiful cathedrals with over-zealous security, I have often been glad that I have my Moment lenses with me.

Awesome Response! Very clear, very detailed, and a great perspective you've brought! I agree, the level of satisfaction to a product starts with your expectations going into the product. You bring up a very good point that it is not an actual replacement for a full frame or mirrorless camera, but in a pinch provides a bit more flexibility than your phone camera if that's all you have, or that's all you can carry. Just like it wouldn't make sense to carry a full frame every time, or a mirrorless, the moment lenses have their place depending on the moment, the situation, or the circumstances. I definitely enjoy using the anamorphic and wide angle lenses, because I do not own a anamorphic lens for my mirrorless, so it's nice to have for those special projects, and the wide angle is perfect, both work great for social media platforms such as Instagram where it's a pain sometimes to record on a mirrorless and then have to resize in post. I'm glad to hear you have some great use out of the tele lens, and for sharing a thoughtful response.

@@jsmoothsalsa The tele lens was especially useful in Mexico where they seem to be more zealous of not permitting cameras than most other democracies. But the silly thing is is that they don't blink an eye at a phone at all, but produce a tripod and they jump on you like a ton of bricks. And Mexico is the sort of place where it is truly frightening when some guy starts yelling at you in Spanish, gesturing wildly, and you have no idea what is going on until someone tells you he doesn't want you taking photographs. I suspect it might often be a ploy to get a bribe, but I never took the risk of finding out.

Hi Micah you can! But you have to buy Momen's lens filter mount (which goes over their lens) to be able to use an ND Filter. However, if you just want to use your personal phone's camera lens and have an ND filter on that, Moment does sell filter mounts for just their cases that would go over your standard phone lense. The best thing about these mounts is that they're a lot smaller and can fit in your pocket, which I have found that I myself carry more often. I typically don't carry my wide angle or anamoprhic Moment lenses because of their size, but I do carry a small ND filter lens and mount which helps a lot when filming in the bright sun.

What lens do you recommend for vertical photography?
@jsmoothsalsa
@jsmoothsalsa 2 жыл бұрын
That would depend on the distance you are to your subject! Buildings and such where you are up close would require a wider lens, and using the panoramic feature on your phone. You'll need that wide angle to get all of your subject into the frame. Depending on your phone, you may already have a wide angle lens on it so getting an additional lens such as the wide angle moment lens, could increase your coverage just a bit more. A zoom lens would make sense if you can't get close enough to your subject, but it would have to be a really good amount of zoom. One of the fun things with photography is getting creative with what you have already. I find that the zoom lens from Moment isn't enough zoom and isn't wide enough. Thus, if we want to just focus on the moment lenses, the wide angle is probably the best for vertical photography because you can get more into the shot, but if your phone has it already you may be likely be fine. Now if we move into mirrorless and full frame cameras, it would have to depend on how close you can get to your subject. Super zoom lenses for vertical photography are great for subjects you have no physical way of getting close to (say the golden gate bridge), but they are not the right choice when if you have a subject right up close and need everything in the shot behind it. That's where a wide angle lens would come in handy.

Hmm..so two things. I think you meant description instead of descirption for the chapters lol 2nd, that moment tele lens that is the newest one is the 58mm not the 60mm which has lots of vignetting compared to the newer version of tele lens. Also, utilizing the moment app to get more out of your shots utilizing your aperture, shutter speed, etc. can also be helpful when taking photos with moment lens since you can select the actual lens to get a more accurate reading.

Is it safe for the moment lens to fall on a concrete?
@jsmoothsalsa
@jsmoothsalsa 2 жыл бұрын
It's sturdy enough build where in my opinion, you probably could and have just the outside of it be scratched, however only if the lens cap were on. It's basically a metal casing with a glass lens mounted to it with no moving parts, withone end having smaller piece of glass for where it mounts with the moment phone case. Next of course is how far of a drop to concrete? A few feet sure I think it'll be okay. If by chance the telephoto lens falls without the lens cap, there's a chance that the lens will not be scratched. however if you drop the wide angle lens, there's a very good chance that will be scratched.
