Well said. I watch these videos more like an anthropologists. Human behavior is fascinating. As someone who doesn't give a rat's ass about watches, these watch people are definitely in a cult. No judgment. Just honest truth from an outside perspective. A watch is just an appliance, like any appliance, but the worship, the emotion, the expense, the waiting, the... all of it, is beyond anything other than; cult. A very expensive cult. And watchmakers are laughing all the way to the bank. A cpu circuit board is far more complex than a watch by 1000 fold, yet you can buy a powerful cpu for a few hundred dollars. Damn these watchmakers are price gouging these people into the grave. What a hustle. What a racket. Feeding on those with the most fragile egos. Taking them to the cleaners. Watchmakers, and dealers, are in the "cleaners" business. Amazing.

I agree with everything you said, and I share your anthropologist’s interest. Really glad to have someone who shares my point of view. My perspective is a little different though, as someone who has roots in the watch business. (One side of my family made watch components, the other retails watches). Also, I have worked on a number of smart watches. Here is a question: If it is so easy to take the money from watch enthusiasts, which brands succeed and which ones fail? Do you know the formula?

Nouveau Riche sounds like an insult from the Nepo Babies. Everyone wants to show status. Some people work hard and make deep sacrifices to succeed. They want something to mark their achievement. People who inherit their generational wealth have less need to compensate themselves for their sacrifices. They turn to connoisseurship as status symbol.

On the other hand, an hommage watch lets you test if the more expensive equivalent is the watch that is right for you. I thought I wanted an Aqua Terra but after having bought and worn an hommage AT for a few months, I just got bored of the style. The mistake would've been to splurge many thousand dollars on an Aqua Terra first. I don't regret not having bought an Aqua Terra and have moved on since. I'm just not interested in it anymore.

I did the same, with different results. I bought a homage to the Rolex Sub. After liking the size and weight, I then got the real thing. However, your story and mine, are not what she is talking about. For me anyway, I could have always gotten the real thing. I just used an inexpensive alternative to make sure I wanted it before I got it. It was not a thing I ever thought I would continue to wear if I liked it. "don't buy homage watches"... Why not? You can still flip them if you do grow tired of them - I've flipped five Steinharts without much difficulty and without taking a huge financial hit on any of them. If the choices are having to sit on a waiting list/having to buy additional crap you don't really want to "qualify" for the watch you *do* want or having to pay 10 - 30 percent surcharge on the grey market ... or getting a well made homage right now and for thousands less, I'm not sure why I would choose options a or b. I mean: It's not like we're talking about spending a few hundred or even a couple of thousand more to get the real thing. If we're talking Rolex, it's often a difference in the five figure range. Plus if it's a faithful enough homage you can use it as a test-object to see if the real thing would work for you in daily wear. If it's uncomfortable or if you grow tired of how it looks on your wrist, you probably won't be happy with the real thing, either.

Wearing an homage watch is a good idea in numerous cities these days, where expensive watch brands attract the attention of dodgy individuals: cut your losses! Beyond that consideration, and looking at the terribly bloated prices of prestige watch brands when looking at the actual inputs in terms of manufacturing costs (Rolex is a perfect example), a decent homage watch is in fact the better purchase from a financial point of view. I have a few of these, and happily wear them: why not? I don't care what others think. A well-made homage watch can be extremely reliable, and be more robust (for instance, 904 stainless steel used by Rolex scratches quite easily, as opposed to 316 stainless steel on the much cheaper homage and lower brand watches). Wanting the original version for the sake of a personal craving for overall perfection is understandable, but if all you really want is a similar external styling with generally surprisingly accurate internal clockwork, the homage version is fine, IMO. I would really like to have a Rolex "Daytona", but sticker shock made me settle for a Chinese-made "Parnis" Homage version: it's perfectly OK, is cheaper than a plastic Swatch, and sports a fun Seiko VK-63 auto-quartz movement. What more do you want? Don't get caught up in the money-draining status symbol trap, like most of the present day social media zombies out there. Last but not least, numerous upper market watches have most of their components "made in China" these days: that includes almost everything supposedly "Swiss Made" from Swatch Group.

@@mastaboog749 I agree with this. However, I do have an issue with Pagani. There are two types of Homage watches. It arrived but was slightly different to the advertised watch photos and the box information. Anyway it's a later version that I didn't know about and it's perfect so far and I have no intent on returning it as it was from the US and for the price to return it isn't worth doing. Tbh I have a few reps that are close to 1:1 with the genuine watches. These are ones where you can't tell it's fake until you open it. I don't think it's wrong or "makes you fake" as you said. I can easily afford these watches as genuine, but buying a 99% equivalent watch for 5% of the price is not only savvy for someone that buys the watch out of joy, but it's a great trial. Different story as an investment or if you're trying to commit fraud / rip someone off. In addition, many people buy watches for the story or conversation starter. A rep at this level of detail is an outstanding conversation starter - "can you believe they even replicated the steel makeup, weight, and the movement inside?!"... Anyway, just something cool to try it out and not break the bank. The few reps I bought were actually well worth the money because now I know I don't actually like most of those watches that much after having it for a few months (especially the Rolex submariner... I really don't like that watch as much as I thought I would). I would have felt horrible if I spent $10-15k on a watch that I wasn't crazy about. On the other hand, the rep omega aqua terra I do really like and would consider buying the genuine. The world timer Black titatnium is $13K and I swear I almost bought it in the store. I stopped the impulse buy and got the rep first. After having it for a while I do like it, but not for $13k. Anyway... Point is I don't think there's much wrong with owning a rep as long as it's to indulge

When the Sprite was released I went on the wait list. Then recently I received the “call”. As the wait was so long I fell out of love for it so I said no thanks. I am at peace that I walked away. And sure enough a couple of weeks later I received a “call” from the same AD for the watch I really wanted. Morel to the story, the AD will still call you if you say no thanks to a watch. Also wait for the one you really want. ✌🏼

I feel that too many people start shopping for watches, and don't consider how it will look on their wrists. I've seen way to many Seamaster 300s and Planet Oceans that are so large in comparison that they look like they are on a child's wrist.

Some people buying a fake watch because they love this watch but they are not ok buying so much money for that. It’s not always for pretending… I can also say people buying expensive watches it’s for saying too others.. I’m rich and you not. The bling bling effects 😊
@leonbeale543110 ай бұрын
Yes! I am not rich and don't want to impress people. At best I have 3 really expensive watches. I love watches and the aesthetics of at least a dozen other watches which I will never afford. Most I wouldn't buy if I had the money as they are massively overpriced. There are good quality homages where I can wear a near identical watch for a fraction of the price. Don't care if they break or get stolen. If anyone were to ask me, I am happy to explain my love of iconic watches and how a given homage reproduces the aesthetic. To the people above saying a 'fake' watch tells you a lot about the owner, well yes, I am a die hard watch enthusiast, not a pretender or investor. Note that watch design copyright is not forever and becomes public domain after a period of time and many are just that. The Chinese are doing to Japanese watches exactly what the Japanese did to Swatches. This discussion is akin to moneyed people talked about owning Bentleys and forgetting most of the world cannot afford them and simply do not care about showing rich or successful they are. Also most observers simply don't care.

This is really simple. Write down the watch you really want. Now presuming you're a mile from either affording it or being able to get it, choose something you can buy now and wear that might "scratch that itch" that you can afford right now. If you said "Daytona" maybe it's a full on clomage, maybe a Seiko chronograph, maybe a Tudor Chrono, maybe a proper fake. Whatever, buy that, wear it. And now do all you can do to get the watch you really want. That's it.

You're very wrong. I own several clones as well as 4 collection worthy originals - Blancpain, Omega, IWC and GS. I get as much pleasure from wearing my copy Blancpain as any original. Also way safer when in the west end of London or India lol... Actually get more comments on the clone Seamaster that I own... And I really enjoy this watch because I'd never spend the full money on an (overated) Rolex... I actually don't think they are very exclusive at all.. and would rather own a clone than a real one... Much rather spend my money on something more nuanced and bespoke than a Rolex which are ubiquitous.... Whatever ADs might tell you lol

I can remember not so long ago when you could walk in to a jewelry store and pick a great Rolex watch, pay for it, and walk out. It was a fine piece of hardware for men who wanted something special. I've owned three in my life and sadly, will never buy from them again. I will not beg a retailer for the pleasure of maybe, if I'm "worthy", to be allowed to buy from them. There are so many fakes out there and it has also become a "flex" symbol as well. There are too many fine watch makers out there to choose from. I wore an Omega seamaster diver pro that my wife bought me if I promised to go scuba diviing in Mexico. I wore it every where in Playa Del Carmen and Cancun and never worried about getting robbed. Only watch nerds like me know what it is and nobody cares. That's fine with me because it makes ME smile and reminds me of a special occasion and how my wife bought this for me as a gift. Twenty years from now it will still bring back great memories and it is a fine watch too. Hey, it's your money and your decision, buy what you want. If you gotta have a Rolex then get it. As for me, I own several watches from $500 to $12k and love them all. I will pass them on to my son. I am older, wiser, and have been blessed financially from a lifetime of hard work and my wife's prudent financial decisions. With all the watch brands competing for this demographic, Rolex has been weighed, measured, and found wanting. Just my opinion from a random guy who has been around the block a couple of times lol.

By definition, a brand cannot homage itself. I’d call those reproductions or re-releases. That Oris was not a mistake, Jenni. It’s beautiful and special.

I see what you’re getting at with 6 (the repeat watch) but it’s completely at odds with my motivation as a vertical collector, exploring the variety within a model. I think maybe it’s more a case of understanding what sort of collector you are before buying the next watch - do you want a different complication each time, or a different use, or is it just a different dial colour you’re after? I was entirely driven by exploring the range of Heuer (pre-TAG) Carreras, now I’m doing the same with Speedies, so I am very deliberately buying repeat watches, just variations on a theme.

With Tissot, Hamilton, Longines and Gshock there is no reason to buy a fake “luxury” watch. So many great watches that watch hobbies respect from those brands. PRX, Field khaki, etc.

I wanted an old Seiko dive watch, specifically the 1968-1970 vintage 6105-8000. I'm certainly not paying hundreds of dollars for a beat up franken-watch, as I wanted an authentic Seiko movement and I want the dings to be from when I fell off of a mountain, not someone else's dings. I bought a RDUNAE 6105-8000, aka slim turtle, and it's case measurements are identical to the old Seiko, right down to the 19mm lug width. It also has an upgraded sapphire crystal and improved screw-down crown. Months later and I'm still very happy with my purchase.
@matthewkey81509 ай бұрын
I would say don't buy an homage if: (1) is an actual counterfeit; (2) is a 1:1 ripoff of the original in everything except the branding/trademark; (3) is an homage of a watch that costs less than $500 (yes they definitely exist); or (4) costs more than 10% of what the real deal would cost you.

Fake watches are a blight on the industry.
@BigA192110 ай бұрын
If they look identical maybe its the industry over charging and raping their customers thats the problem. I saw one of producer michaels video about fakes they had microscrope and were over analyzing it. They still werent able to notice the difference. A rolex is nothing more than a brand a logo. But people are dumb and think of it as some sort of history, or heritage and not what it truly is. A company designed to make as much money as possible. The Rolex submariner could easily retail for under 1,000 and they would still profit but they charge 15x that amount because they can.

People saying fake watches are unethical are just coping with the fact that factories in china can produce an almost exact copy of a 10.750 EUR Rolex and sell it for 500 USD There are few things that the factories in china can't get right and that is the quality of the cyclop, the AR coating, specific colors like the 116610LV, 126710BLNR, 126710BLRO, 126720VTNR, and the finishing of the movement and of course the Quality Control Outside of those things they have pretty much got it all right, in fact they are making watches with specific flaws on purpose so that the next year they can still get buyers The movements might break because the Quality Control is bad and factories in china dont lubricate them properly or assemble them correctly, but if you spend more money and get it to a watchmaker that can clean the movement, lubricate and assemble it properly, you won't really have any problems People need to accept reality, stop this copium

I will spend $200 on an homage to see if I like it enough to buy the real thing later. $200 vs. $10,000 is an easy entry. Companies like Cronos make nice watches. I have an Explorer and Pepsi. I'm on a wait list for the Rolex, but who knows when it will come available?

I feel like it’s ok to wear a fake watch if you own the real one at the same time. Like for instance you wear the fake one for travel because you don’t know how the crime is in the location you are going but you wear the real one in place you are familiar with. Like how people do with engagement rings wear the real one locally and wear the fake when going somewhere dodgy

I agree on the homage watch to a degree. If the homage is 10% the price of the original and still well made I am good with it. I mean Baltany had a homage of VC 1921. The VC 1921 is what $30k or $40k

Interesting that you showed the Seiko tank as an example of an homage, because... I got that one, but before I did I bought myself an homage - that is: an homage to the homage (from IBSO). For about 10% of the cost. It's a close call which of the two watches I like better. The hands on the Seiko are nicer, but that £20 Chinese watch has a better crown and much nicer watchband. The Cartier was not even an afterthought, I don't spend that kind of money on a single watch, ever.
