Premier parfait chunky does shed and falls apart like the himalaya dolphin, sometimes you get a lot that is just so fragile, while other skeins are easier to work with and not fall apart. I would think that would be the same for himalaya as well. You must have had a good skein that didn't fall apart, but that is not always the case. The quality control varies a lot between skiens.

I used Premier chunky for the first time on a large amigurumi and it had all the cons and few of the pros. I thought maybe one of the others would be a better choice, so it’s a little discouraging that the best was the one I already wasn’t a fan of. If that’s the best, I think maybe using chenille yarn just isn’t for me. Or, as was stated, maybe it was a weak skein or a difficult color (dark red). Thanks for the review, Elise. Great info as always!

WOW! Thank you, Elise! How exciting that Premier Parfait Chunky came out #1 for your test! We sincerely appreciate your support for the Premier Yarn Brand. The Premier Parfait Chunky Yarn collection always sells out very quickly and we work with the Mill daily to keep it in stock. Our Mill in Turkey also works daily to continue to improve the quality. Due to the nature of Chenille Yarn, it will always be a challenge to make every skein perfect; however, that is always the goal for all Premier Yarn Collections. Out of those three yarns, only the himalayah dolphin baby is easily available in my area, so i have some experience with it. The one tip that i have for creating amigurumi with it is to never use this yarn to sew the pieces together! It's always a nightmare. It's way better to use just some thinner, not fluffy yarn (preferably cotton or cotton blend, I recommend yarnart jeans) in a similar color to the piece you are sewing on. If you have enough tension when sewing, you won't see any of the seams anyway, and you will save yourself a lot of headache :) Also when i usse fluffy yarn, I always use 2ch beginning. I generally think, that MR is way better for amigurumi, but it's not worth the frustration that comes with using it with fluffy yarn, especially tha ones that shed easily. Hope this helps someone! :)

I did lose an about a foot of yarn just trying to do the MR and then found the alternative 2 chain start and it was perfect after that. Funny you'd upload this today...yesterday I crocheted the waffle pillow by Little World of Whimsy, which was supposed to be done in Chenille Home jumbo (Michael's brand), but all the Michael's stores were out of the mustard color, so I finally settled on Yarn Bee Eternal Bliss from Hobby Lobby. BIG MISTAKE!! That super chunky yarn is NOT the same as a chenille/velvet, and it about killed my hands. (Crochet hook size was US S / 19mm, for reference.) Frogging was a nightmare because it's so thick -- which also makes working with it a nightmare, as it does not glide easily -- and the waffle stitch eats yarn like you wouldn't believe. It took 3 skeins to do a 14" x 14" pillow, and I literally only had about 10 inches of yarn left at the end. The butter pat was done with much more easy yarn: Sweet Snuggles by Loops & Threads, in yellow (because who really wants *white* butter?!). Not a lot of stitch definition and definitely shedding, shedding, shedding, and frogging was a delicate task. But it's literally buttery soft and the little butter pat is honestly the cutest part of the pillow. I'm looking forward to maybe crocheting a duckling with the rest of the yellow chenille. 🙂 So I'll have to see if I can find some of the Premier Parfait Chunky (I try to avoid ordering yarn online) at one of our local yarn shops. Thanks for the video!

I am loving all the adorable little toys made with these types of yarn. Way back in the day I tried to work with chenille and it was too stressful because I couldn't see my stitches and frogging was a nightmare. I know textile manufacturing has improved over the years so I'd love to try again. My friend resisted jumping on the Cricket bandwagon for years but had the opportunity to buy one at a garage sale for literally pennies on the dollar (they had zero idea what they were selling) and she's never been the same since 😂. She absolutely loves that thing and uses it for so many crafts.

My first experience with crochet was with Chenille. I liked the softness but the shedding doesn't work well for a beginner like me who has to redo things a bunch. Also this is less relevant to the yarn but it makes me happy that you talked about making mistakes, most of the crochet people I watch occasionally don't mention it so it seems like they don't make mistakes at all. Anyway my point is that I'm glad that you mentioned that because I do have unrealistic expectations of my own work but recently I've learned it is okay and natural to make mistakes (in crochet and in general,) and it's part of the learning process. Thanks for the video :)

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't recommend using chenille as a beginner, it's tough to work with even if you have a lot of amigurumi experience! And let me tell you, I make mistakes all the time!! They used to frustrate me so much, but now I see them as the best teachers we could ever have. When we take the time to figure out why we are making mistakes it helps us for future projects. I guess that could apply to life in general too! ❤️❤️❤️

I love parfait chunky because of the price and the wide array of color choices! But I do agree some skeins are very thin while others are thick and some shed more than others. On the other hand I have also tried Hobbi honey bunny yarn and I must say it is amazing!! It has a higher price point but for a very good reason. All of the skeins I have purchased from them are consistent in thickness and texture and is well worth the money!! It is easier to make a magic ring and doesn’t catch itself, is easy to undo and I would really recommend trying it!!

My biggest complaint is that Cricut has raised their prices and that some of the supplies ,like blades, are not available readily anymore. Rant now over!! The pigs are cute. I have a friend who just made an octopus from a big box store chenille yarn. It was very cute, but shed terribly and didn't frog well. Conclusion: I'd use it again but use a different yarn to sew the pieces together.

I used to make little owls, which I would stuff with cut up sponge, so I can put a few drops of essential oils to stuff into your linen drawers or under your pillow. For making the eyes, I find taking a straw and stamping the end in ink and then on the felt, gives you a good outline to follow while cutting. The only thing is, they only come in very limited sizes, like slushie straws, regular straws, or even stir straws, but you can always cut down a little or up a little to make it fit. Also, instead of gluing, I would stitch an ‘x’ in the middle to anchor it down. I don’t know how glue would react to essential oils, so I try to keep things as natural as I can, and it worked out great for me. I hope this helps. By the way, I love the pigs! Great video.

@@EliseRoseCrochetIt depends on the felt you buy! The only felt sheets available to me would not cut in the cricut at all even with the max pressure. It would just tear instead. I ended up ruining the cricut mat that way, which was embarassing because it was a public use cricut from the library maker space! Scissors would just chew the felt up and an exacto knife + cutting mat did the same. Once I bonded it with wax paper it worked fine in the cricut, but boy was it a journey to get that knowledge. You must have bought pre-bonded felt since it worked right away for you. (Jealous 😂 bonding lots of felt takes foreverrrr) I love using the cricut for felt eyes because you can measure your amigurumi and then adjust the shapes as a single group in cricut design space to keep proportions the same.

Hi Elise….Love your little piggies….they are so so adorable!! Currently I am using Premier Chunky chenille yarn to make some Candy Corns….my 1st time using it too. I lOVE the buttery softness of it….however I have had a few issues with it shedding off the cord. I’ve also learned if I frog one stitch at a time slowly it does help. It doesn’t shed much like you showed the Himalayan yarn does tho. I do love all the color choices with Premier Chunky! I most definitely will use this yarn again. I love how you showed us how to use the cricket machine to make the eyes…..that is awesome!! I gave my sister one of these machines 5 years ago for her birthday and she still has NOT ever used it. 🤦🏻‍♀️😢 I think I’m going to get it from her & start using it myself. 😂 Have a fabulous & blessed weekend! 😊🧶🦋💜

I always love your videos! I’m an avid amigurumi maker and chenille yarn has been my favorite at least in the past two years. I agree with all your points on each of these yarns completely! If I could throw in another, I buy a lot of Michael’s sweet snuggles lite. Sometimes I can find my usual colors in store, but they’re usually pretty picked through! I often order through the app. The downside to Michael’s yarn is shedding on the end pretty bad. I work slowly when weaving in ends or pulling closed a magic ring. Frogging is easier than dolphin baby for sure. It’s also super soft and I adore the colors. They could have more and I hope they eventually do, but it is a good selection!

I don't understand why people are so concerned about the final size of the toy they're making from a pattern. I personally like that those little pigs are slightly different in size - it makes them unique and gives them their own personalities. I see how it matters when you're making clothing, but with toys?

Thank you so much for the chenille yarn review. I have been wanting to try chenille amigurumi but was not sure about chenille yarn. You are so lucky that you live so close to Premier Yarns. I live in the northeast and cannot find most of their yarns in stores here even though I have heard many good things about the yarns. I believe Premier yarn and Dolphin baby yarn are produced at the same company Fistas in Turkey. It looks like it's the same yarn, at least colors look identical. Probably Dolphin baby is produced for Europe and Turkey itself, and Premier for North America. Correct me if I am wrong. I also noticed that shedding depends on color and even the batch. I had light pink Dolphin baby that was very fragile and I could not work with it, and my newest one is great and works very easily, same color.

@@EliseRoseCrochet It's the same company Fistas in Turkey. This info is on Premier yarn official page. If you go to the official page of Fista's company, you will find that Himalaya yarn is also produced by them! One yarn mill makes the same yarn for different yarn companies. Most yarns are made by the same mills but sold under different brand names.

Wow Elise you’re a fast learner of the Cricut. I didn’t know Cricut had the felt I’ve been looking for. I just started two weeks ago with chenille yarn ( I prefer mercerized cotton) and apparently there is an issue with the white Parfait yarn. Unfortunately a lot of colours of Parfait are out of stock in Canada. What size hook did you use? Thanks for introducing Green Frog Crochet!!!🧶

As someone that's been working a lot with Jumbo Yarn (Parfait XL, Loops and Threads Sweet Snuggles, etc...) I can confirm that bulkier yarn tends to be very hit or miss on shedding. Playing it a little looser on the stitches helps a bit with visibility and frogging. It's best to try a new pattern in something that doesn't shed much before moving into the chunkier yarns to avoid frogging as best you can, but if you have to take it one stitch at a time like you suggested, and use two hands. Pull the lead thread with one hand and hold down the 'loop' it's going through with the other to minimize friction. For tapestry needles you'll want to get a jumbo tapestry needle with a bigger eye to minimize shedding... Though I do still find that weaving in the ends and sewing can still create a lot of shedding on some skeins, there's not a lot that can be done about that. Ultimately when working with those yarns for Amigurumi I lay down some tarp and stuff to catch the dust and wear like an apron or something as if I were painting haha. I like to crochet at my booth sometimes at craft fairs, but I've sense learned not to do that with the bulkier yarns and stick to #5 or below.

With my experience with chenille yarns, it depends on the colourway as to which will be the strongest. Some batches just seem to have a stronger structure than than others. I also find with all chenille yarns, especially those ones with glitter infused throughout, require a lot of gentle handling otherwise the yarn is easily damaged and will flake regardless of the brand! This is also a reason why I tell people to avoid caking the chenille yarns as it can damage the whole skein 😅

I didn't realize I was on trend lol! I haven't had any issue with stuffing falling out or anything. I do also grab other similar weight in other brands for accent colors that I can't find in Bernat. I love the walk-through of Cricut stuff. I may have to budget to buy this, because OMG, cutting out eyes is a PITA!! It's exactly why I usually just cut out the white part and then paint the iris color. (I don't normally worry about pupils or eye shines.) Also, as far as glue, I'll either use my glue gun for putting the eyes on, or if I don't feel like plugging it in, I'll use Original Tacky Glue. That stuff is amazing for holding felt to yarn, and it dries fairly quickly. (I don't know the span because after I glue it, I don't touch it for a day.) But I haven't had any problems with the pieces I've glued this way. They stay on once they're bonded.

Okay, so some world changing tip I’ve found is burning the ends of the chenille yarn with a lighter! I have an electric lighter with 2 prongs. Just hold the end inbetween and burn them and boom no fraying!! You can use a regular lighter with flame too. Just takes a split second to burn. Starts a flame? Just blow it out like a candle. I always reroll all my yarn into cakes and I make sure to burn both ends of the roll. I don’t even use scissors when crocheting with it, I just use my little lighter to cut it, automatically burns both ends! I highly recommend trying this burn trick! It’s a life saver and makes working with chenille so much easier!!

Himalaya Dolphin Baby is amazing. There is no ripping ofcourse. If you are not paying attention and loose count you gave to unravel slowly and carefully. It will allow you to do it once. That is not a negative point of the yarn. It is just the nature of the material. You don't attempt constructing a new pattern with this yarn. If you need to make a lot of changes take wool or cotton and then use HDB when testing your pattern. If you know how to use it you will have no issues with it. Making the MR has to beloose and tug on the tail gently. It took me more than a few discarded MR starts to figure it out. When thredding and weaving in the loose ends the best thing to do is to pluck out the plush and work only with the thread holding the plush together. You are making a review based on a H-Aed attempt at it.

What size does it come in? I've been looking everywhere for a 10mm+ to make extra large plushies and so far only found one brand and they have a very small color selection :(

@@someoriginalname5660 well the one I use calls for a 8mm hook 6weight but I know Bernat has some 7 weight that calls for a 25mm hook but I haven’t used it yet. The color selection looks quite nice though, that’s why I like Bernat.

I just started and purchased 3 rolls of Parfait to make a cute amigurumi bee and was wondering if I made the right decision, then I found your video. Thank you!!!

Thank you for this video. It's a greal one. I know it took time to do the research. And the crocheting to test the yarns. Very helpful. I'm doing amagarumi and now feel good about choosing a fluffy yarn. TFS! Austin TX USA

I love watching your videos, I just started crocheting in September and I learn so much from you and Toni! My question is about the parfait chunky. I have 2 brand new granddaughters and wanted to make them something from the knotted loveys book that you recommended. i am hoping these will be items that they carry around with them all the time. how well do you think this yarn will wash, or do you suggest another yarn that would be cozy but more durable. Thank you for your time!

That is such a good question! I honestly don't know. I would do a Google search and see what comes up. Hopefully someone has already answered that question for you!! 🧶🧶🧶

Thank you for this comparison. I uses the Himalaya Dolphin Baby yarn foranimals for my grandbabies because thats what the designer recommended. I did have issues with shedding and they turned out snaller tha. I expected. I will try the Premier next time. Now i just have to figure out what to do with all of the yarn i have leftover.
