I would imagine somebody that’s shopping for a vehicle is looking at multiple vehicles. In my opinion, I feel it is the responsibility of the potential purchaser of a vehicle to buy a VIN report on a car they are interested in. The seller could be helpful in providing one, but I don't think it should be the sellers responsibility. When you go buy something, you do research on that before you pour money into it, don't you? Why should a $20k (or $2k, or even $500, price makes no difference) investment be any different? If you found a bad report, brush it off and consider it a bullet dodged. When I am shopping for a car, I buy 3 Carfax reports. Ran me $60 last time. My first car I ran was a Suburu Forrester at a local used car dealership. The car looked quite clean, but when I pulled the VIN, I found that not only had it been wrecked twice, but also was stolen at one point. I showed the manager at the dealer my findings, and he told me that under law, as long as it is roadworthy, it can be sold. Yeah. I didn't look any more at that dealership. So, my point being, a $60 investment saved me thousands.
@GeeEee752 ай бұрын
I've never sold or bought a car but when buying a house or apartment it's up to the buyer to pay for things like building inspections, pest inspections and surveyors reports, and a buyer certainly wouldn't expect the vendor to buy reports from the company of their choice!

@danieltaylor41854 жыл бұрын
I mean, I don't think what they made was that difficult, and the front-facing stuff looks like it's just a template, because they spammed it over and over again. But point taken, if you're going to make an email bot that hits public records about a VIN and spits out a PDF with that info slotted in, you might as well go legit and hook in to whatever serves up the accident reports and legit vehicle history. It's kind of amazing that they committed this much to the scam.

@@danieltaylor4185 Throwing up template sites isn't difficult but to purchase the domains, manage them, create scripts and have to keep swapping merchants and bank accounts for just small amounts of money must be frustrating and a lot effort. Just bought a classic mini in the UK. We have an annual car test here for vehicles over 3 and under 40 years old called the MOT. Fairly comprehensive test in specially licenced centers costing around £50. Here you can go on the Gov MOT site and from the registration number of the vehicle get all it's MOT history since the late 90's when they started doing it on computers. The thing is each MOT shows not just pass/fail but also lists items the vehicle failed on. It also has an 'adviseries' section of items not yet MOT faliours but on their way to being so like structual areas rust. It is an invaluable source of info when looking to buy a vehicle as you often quickly spot inconsistencies suggesting dodgy car history. Avoided a few problem vehicles with that! You can also go for a full vehicle check but better to check the MOT one for free first as they cost around £30 a pop. it is not the norm here to expect the seller to have a car report ready, in fact I've never noticed anyone selling offering one but there was talk of making it mandatory to do so a while ago, probably a EU type directive as they are big on regulations. Cars here over 40 can apply to be registered as 'historic vehicle' and no longer require taxation to use on the road or an annual MOT though many people still MOT them to check on their condition. I guess in places where there is no MOT equivillent then you really do need a vehicle report pretty much every time.

I also ran into these scams when trying to sell a car online. I thought the website would try to install malware or just scrape a credit card, but this is even more clever.

This is actually a really good hustle. They are technically providing exactly that you're buying, albeit not really accurate or detailed. Regardless, they are providing a service and not just flat-out stealing.

It's definitely one of the nicer scams out there. They're not stealing important information, using sextortion, or even stealing that much money. It's only $25 and for most people, $25 ain't gonna break the bank.

Tell your friend not to offer that the potential buyer is the first to reach out. Gives the buyer more negotiating power, especially if it isn't a brand new posting. Thanks for sharing about the scam, though!

I’m selling my car right now and I had this same thing happen to me. It almost got me until I made an account with a random password I’d never use or remember and it tried to redirect me to PayPal instantly. I’m glad I caught it before I bought it.

I love your Harry's ad, but you left me hanging with the following statement: "My face is smoother than my baby's." Your baby's what... behind? ;-) Keep the awesome videos coming, Ben!

It could be interesting to have a copy of the report the website sent you. What will the scammers do if we send them a report from the site (except with the VIN modified) but they didn't get the money?
I like your content it’s really cool to see some one try to make a difference out there in the world right some wrongs that weren’t even yours.... I searched you channel and found no videos about pyramid schemes or scams. I think it would greatly help your community if you explained how they worked and the odds of actually making money in one compared to wasting time and money

I got a dozen requests for these reports when I posted my truck for sale a couple of months ago. I told them I had a current carfax (which I didn't) and they all said their report is better. None of them asked if I was willing to take less like most real people do and all of them said they were in area and wanted to come see it tomorrow but I needed the report right away. They all sent links in their text messages too.

I've had a very similar experience. A lot of these scammers will use a variation of abbreviations. I had one use "BS" report before. Glad I was able to sell it to someone reputable though.

Bad impression for Pakistan? I don't understand. That corrupt terrorist-harboring shithole wasn't exactly a shining example of a place you'd want to live in the first place. In fact, I'm not sure what anybody could do to hurt their reputation as it is. If some Pakistanis came to the UK and set fire to a girl's school which resulted in the deaths of 200 children, I'd think "yup, that's Pakistan for you. Par for the course." Seriously. How could that country possibly get any worse?

I just went through this. I had several inquiries where the person started a normal conversation and then dropped in a request that I send them a vehicle report at the end of the conversation. I told the very first one that if the want to buy an owner's report, that was on them. They kept insisting, so I looked it up and found out it was a scam. Then they kept coming from other supposed buyers. It was crazy.
