VCR's aren't hard to find since they are donated regularly to thrift stores. Most of my VHS VCR's are JVC Super VHS ET VCR's and I bought three out of the four of them from a local Salvation Army Thrift Store from $9.99 up to $14.99 each. These days, prices range from $7.99 to $24.99 depending on the thrift store chain. There are lots of VCR's for sale on eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Kijiji, etc. :)

You will not break a VCR when rewinding a tape. The clutch is basically freewheeling when you use the full speed rewind. If you do not use the picture search much, your VCR will last for a long time. The VCR always ajusts the tape speed accordingly. It has specific sensors for the job.

I own at least five VHS rewinders; most of which I have bought used for $5 or less from local thrift stores. Two of the Kinyo units I own are able to fast-forward too which comes in handy. I use them all the time with no issues whatsoever and the point of using VHS rewinders is to save wear and tear on the heads of one's VCR's. If they're not damaging your tapes, use them. If they are damaging and crinkling your tapes, throw them out or take them to an electronics recycling depot.

I totally get where you’re coming from! Long comment incoming. I couldn’t find a great reference photo in the video, but I’d be comfortable relying on a unit that controls the rewind speed and doesn’t just snap shut when finished. I’d love one of the really old ones that are basically VCRs that only rewind. Something used in a rental store or for commercial use. But when it comes to these cheaply made boxes, they weren’t really that amazing when they were new 30 years ago. This isn’t necessarily coming from you but you’re the top comment and I don’t want to be a broken record, I am not saying to trash your rewinders or that one day they’ll suddenly kill a tape. I think this particularly common unit is very flawed in not slowing down whatsoever in its rewinds speed. I am often thinking about reducing wear of my VCRs, but I also don’t baby them too much. If you like to collect rewinders I’ll never say no to that! For me, my tapes are the biggest priority always. I have a lot of copies I can’t just find on eBay or replace like that. With 4 VCRs and enough knowledge to perform maintenance and repairs I’d much rather have belts wearing out or gears needing some love than a tape I’ll never be able to replace being destroyed. Especially for a novice trying to get into the hobby, I stand by them not being reliable. Purchasing them to prevent them hitting a landfill is great, e-waste bad. And also my opinion is not gospel 😂 that’s too just much pressure. I’m just a person talking online

My mom, back in the day, bought a rewinder because she was afraid of wearing out the VCR's motor, but she ended up going through a bunch of them because they used cheap motors that wore out. But the VCR's motor was much more reliable so that ended up being better for rewinding anyway. We kept the rewinder around for rewinding the first rental tape we got done with while watching the next one to save the wear and tear on the rewinder. :)

I got a rewinder earlier this year. It works fine with most tapes however when I tested it with my 1982 VHS of The Little Princess, it did end up snapping at the very beginning of the tape (which fortunately I was able to fix without any major hiccups). So I wouldn't put anything pressed pre-1990 in one of those but most tapes should work fine. It's a Kinyo model, from 2001.

VHS VCRs and rewinders detect the end or beginning of a tape by shining a light through the tape and sensing for that light - during the process, the tape blocks the light, but the ends of the tape are clear plastic leaders so those will allow the light through, which the mechanism senses using a photoresistor. However, photoresistors are a bit laggy, so that's why it's important for the tape to spin slowly enough to ensure it doesn't snap before it has a chance to change resistance. As you mention, modern VCRs can detect the approximate winding position of a tape by comparing the speed of the takeup reel with that of the supply reel - if the supply spins faster than the takeup, then it knows it's closer to the beginning than the end, because the circumference of the wound tape increases as more tape is wound onto a reel. I wonder if a Betamax tape rewinder would be more reliable. Betamax equipment sense the ends of a tape using magnetic sensors and magnetic strip leaders on the tape instead of clear plastic - magnetic sensors are way more instantaneous than photoresistors.
@toasTr0n5 ай бұрын
Only the very earliest machines used photoresistors. By the 1980s they all used photodiodes instead.

Often when I have bought used VHS tapes from thrift stores, not every previous owner was "kind to rewind", so when I have taken home several tapes that needed to be rewound, there was no way I was going to rewind them in any of my VCR's. I always use one of my VHS rewinders, but I keep an eye on the rewinders to make sure they are operating properly and as soon as the tape is fully rewound, I eject the tape immediately to prevent possible over-winding or damage. I've never had an issue with any of my rewinder/fast-forward units in terms of tapes being chewed or crinkled. None of my tapes was ever damaged.

I would just buy a cheap old VCR just for rewinding I'd recommend one from the 90s or 80s as they retracted the tape before rewinding putting less stress on the tape while the newer ones like 2000 or higher at the tail end of VCR's leave the tape wrapped around the heads which isn't very good for the tape or heads. Doing this if you burn out a motor or something rewinding a lot of tapes at least your daily driver VCR will be okay.

I have three rewinders, two of them are car ones, a purple car and a Red car. The other one is a rewinder that also forwards as well. I never really had an issue with them, only time is if I had to rewind a movie that was over two hours in SP Mode (or a T-160 tape for example). Once the tape is nearly done rewinding, it tends to lose tension and as such, the film kinda bundles up close to the start and when you play that section, there will be lines (it's kinda hard to describe unless I have a picture to show LOL). That's really about my only gripe with them. Other than that, I use them half of the time. My Sharp VCR rewinds so friggin' slow on a tape that's under an hour in SP Mode, it's almost 1.25x faster than reverse search!! But when I watch a feature film it kicks up speed nicely and slows down at the start just the way I like it!😉👌

Fascinating your Panasonic seemingly has a binary speed mode switch. My family had a cheapy Grundig one from the early-00s (to replace a broken early-90s one) and that unit had a continuously variable rewind speed. You'd still hear the switch clicking, but it would gradually transition from one speed to another. And by the time it reached the very end of the tape, it was actually going barely any faster than regular playback. I imagine that's the gentlest kind of rewind mechanism you could get.

Personally, I would recommend getting a VHS rewinder as it’s worth pointing out with a lot of these VCRs with the exception of the early ones (which I find most of them don’t work now unless if you’re able to repair and refurbish them) the videotape is always wrapped around video head so even when rewinding, especially if you’ve got a particularly old videotape, it’s very likely the oxide on the tape is going to shred off and make an absolute mess of the video head, audio heads and guide rollers meaning you’re going to have to open up the VCR and clean the thing out with isopropyl alcohol so it can play tapes properly. With rewinder, nothing is touching the tape meaning not only the tape will last longer but also the VCR will last longer as a result. Also, the rewinder you’ve got is a particularly early one and time hasn’t been on its side, it’s recommended to get a more recent one as it will be far more likely to work properly and will have less tension on the tape. Hope it helps.

I went to school for all of this, so you don't cause MUCH wear and tear on a VCR by rewinding your Cassettes; that's what the machines are designed to do: Play, Skip, Fast-Forward, record/Erase and Re-wind. VHS Rewinders were just a Cash-grab for most people who were deluded into thinking that rewinding from your expensive VHS Recorder/Player can cause extreme damage. NO VCR that was designed from MY years of repairing and REBUILDING these units can rewind too fast. There is a Silver LEAD Sticker that binds the actual Magnetic tape to the Clear LEADER. When the electronic sensor bulb detects that Silver tape, it WILL stop rewinding automatically, then advance the leader tape to the BEGINNING of the Magnetic Media. And Panasonic Omni-Vision VCR's were easy to repair. I would strongly suggest that you do more homework and research. And what are you doing messing with Mode Switches on a VCR without a Service Manual?
@ThroughTheCracksProductions6 ай бұрын
Had a rather surreal moment of you showing off your VCRs and looking across the room at my own Panasonic Omnivision. Same model. Great video! Other than that, some rad info, presented in a fun manner!

Some misunderstandings about the mode switch here. The mode switch simply tells the electronics what position the mechanism is in. It has no control over anything else, such as rewind speed. You can't hear a mode switch operating, it's just a small rotary or sliding switch with about half a dozen contacts. A 2-head VCR isn't necessarily a low-quality machine. Head count is no real measure of anything besides what extra features a machine has. For SP recording/playback, 2 heads are all you need. An extra head will give you better freeze-frame. Two extra heads will give you better EP/LP results (only 2 heads are ever being used for the video...one pair or the other). Another head could be flying erase, for cleaner edits. Another pair for HiFi audio. Adding heads means more features, but doesn't in any way guarantee higher quality. More heads will never give you a better picture quality, except in the case of EP/LP...which is garbage anyway. It's shameful that some US prerecorded tapes are EP recordings, just to save a little bit of videotape! Most "modern" VCRs have absolutely horrible mechanisms, but they do tend to have fast rewinds. For someone such as yourself, I'd recommend a late-model Panasonic VHS/DVD combo with HDMI output. There's a very good chance that the original owner barely touched the VCR and mostly used it for playing DVDs. The quality is only "ok", mechanically, but certainly far, far better than brands such as Magnavox. I wouldn't recommend older VCRs to anyone who isn't fully competent in electronics repair. Nobody should be messing around with mode switches unless they really know what they're doing!
@Pentium100MHz6 ай бұрын
I do not have a VHS rewinder, but if I came across one I would probably buy it. I think the problem of the rewinder not slowing down at the end of tape probably can be solved by reducing the voltage to the motor, so that it always winds slower. I would want a slow rewind anyway, especially if it is done by a separate device, so I can use my VCR at the time. Normally, when I finish recording or playing a tape, I wind it all the way forward, then back. My intention is to keep the tape pack as even as possible. Unfortunately, the VCRs I usually use to play and record tapes do not unthread the tape when rewinding, so both the tape and the heads experience more wear. A professional VCR I have does unthread the tape and is rather slow at rewinding, so I sometimes use it to just rewind the tape. Of course, I could get another VCR and use it just for winding the tape, but a VCR would take up more space than a rewinder. What's weird to me in general is that for audio tapes, the recommendation is to keep them "tails out" and yet for VHS the recommendation is to rewind them after playing.

I guess if you want a VHS rewinder just get a rock bottom VCR that still works. since you're probably gonna watch another tape anyways you can probably just keep it going and it'll be done before the movie is over anyways. although I don't know of anyone that has had trouble with a VHS rewinder, as long as you get a decent quality one it shouldn't break your tapes, and make sure to open and clean/lubricate the motors and insides, use a donor tape for testing, etc. you may be able to slow a rewinder down using a motor controller, but ofc at your own risk. maybe running it at a slower speed will make it safer, a lot of these rewinders go way too fast.

Different VHS rewinders do different things. Fast Rewinding on a normal VCR ruins the tape little by little along with the tape chassis. I have a new one from a thrift store, works great. No tapes damaged. Its all about the hardware you have. Bad Hardware = ruined tapes. You can't just go off what technology a specific person has. Everyone has different hardware. Edit: Your model is probably from the time when they were just invented. Its an early model and works horribly. Here is a wikipedia article that backs up my claim: Much like Beta tape rewinders,[1] VHS tape rewinders devices were created shortly after the production of videotapes and were used for several reasons. One was because VCRs were believed to make kinks in the tapes which could corrupt playback after several rewinds. Another was to facilitate rewinding of a just-watched tape while you watched another. Video rental stores like Blockbuster charged a fee for not rewinding VHS tapes when returning, and had slogans like 'Be kind, please rewind'. The rewinder would rewind tapes smoothly and additionally be several times faster. Using them would also prevent wear and tear on the heads of the VCR itself, and provide convenience to watch the next tape immediately after.[2][3] In 1993 a video magazine editor surveyed electronics repair experts, asking them, "What is the worst thing you can do to your VCR?" The most common answer was regular rewinding rented videotapes. The experts advised using a tape rewinder to save VCR heads from "junk" on rental cassettes.[4]

Slow rewind is actually better for the tapes longevity, so dont be alarmed if top end units actally rewinds a little slowe,r the cheaper units can damage tapes. Fast rewind puts tremendous wear and tear on the tape and espeacially stretching if it goes fast, interupt gear speeds or slow towards the end, At home in my electronics lab I have actually invented a mechanical Tape rewindeder for both VHS and audio, the speed is adjusted by two timed hysteresis Motors controlled by pole transformer frequencies which go one way, unfotunatley my project is not open sourced. A seprate rewinder is necessary but the commercial ones are not equipped with frequency modulator speed (they use gears). The Gear motors in VHS recorders is what Damages the condition of the tape making its life shorter and shorter as it progresses the fast rewind or fast forward, pause and tracking can also damage the tape video and audio layers so its not advisable. in saying that a seperate VHS rewinder is designed specificaly for this function, it has a smooth glide rewinding trangression which prevent spool stalling and tape damage.

I wanted to ask your opinion on something. What would be your method of removing smelly odours from VHS tapes? The reason I'm asking is that I buy quite a few tapes a month from places like Ebay etc. There's nowhere around where I live that sells tapes at all, so I have to order online to keep my collection/hobby going. It is becoming more and more of a thing where I'm getting tapes arrive that either smell of stale cigarette smoke, or sometimes worse, weed smoke. I don't usually mind other smells, but those two smells, cigarettes and weed, I can't stand. What would be your advice on removing these horrible smells, without somehow damaging the tapes? I air them out outside, but I worry that will cause mould. Any help would be appreciated my friend.
@YasmineCollects6 ай бұрын
Oh this is a tough one. I’ve found that nothing truly removes the damage of cigarette smoke. Unrelated but also related- I thrift a lot of clothing. I have pieces that I bought smelling of smoke and have been washed 10x over…they still smell and I just live with it. Your best bet is to ask the seller when buying if the item comes from a smoke free home, at least then you have it documented and can possibly get your money back. Not entirely sure about removing it because really the tape itself is so thin, you can’t really “clean it” it you know what I mean. My advice (just a random person online so I’m not the messiah of tapes or anything 😂) - don’t air them outside. Humidity especially is the killer and mold loves it. Tapes need consistent temperature so I’d rather have smell than damage - get a VCR designated for the smellys only. I have a VCR I use for my “purgatory” tapes. That way they don’t potentially contaminate my Panasonic
