Do you ever actually test products or just read the spec sheet? Those transmit/receive distances will most likely never be able to achieve 50% of the advertised distances. I would prefer a real evaluation with actual usage.

Just so people know only FRS is legal to operate without a license. GMRS and HAM will get you a fine since you need a license to use those frequencies. Number 5 is for sure a HAM radio.

Also, to clarify...as long as the radio does not transmit over 500milliwatts (1/2 watt) on GMRS it is legal to operate without a license. Also, operator must standby on GMRS frequencies if licensed services are using the frequency.

hi I have a question: is there any difference between UHF frequencies?? for example, I mean is there any difference between 410.5 MHz vs 470 MHz?? I'm a mountain climber and I have purchased a uv82. now I want to know which frequency should I use in mountains and forests to achieve the most range? and also which frequency should I use in outdoor(such as deserts) to achieve the most range? or there is no difference between 410 & 433 & 470 MHz at all !??
@itsapittie2 жыл бұрын
The distance over which you can communicate depends primarily upon three factors: (1) Obstructions. If there are no obstructions, i.e. you have a completely clear path such as from one mountain top to another, the distances can be surprisingly long. This is usually what the company is touting as maximum range when they sell the radio, so a "20 mile capable" FRS radio is typically good for 1-2 miles under real-world conditions. (2) Power. FRS radios are limited to 2 watts whereas the Baofeng he listed can transmit with up to 8 watts of power. More power means more distance and clearer communications but it's still adversely affected by obstructions, just not as much. (3) Equipment. An antenna perfectly matched to the frequency you plan to use can make a significant difference in practical communication distance. The ratio of the antenna length to the wavelength is the key factor. By regulation, a radio sold as an FRS radio must have a non-removable "stub" antenna. A longer antenna doesn't always mean better communication but the ideal length is almost always longer than the stub antenna on a normal FRS radio. Since you can only have a "perfect" antenna match for one frequency, replacement antennas are typically "tuned" for the middle of a given range of frequencies and since the "spread" of FRS/GMRS frequencies (462.6626 - 467.7125 Mhz) isn't very large, that's good enough. Again, the Baofeng is the only radio on this list with a removable/replaceable antenna and I know from experience that a good aftermarket antenna tuned for the GMRS band makes a noticeable improvement in distance and clarity. At this point it bears pointing out that the Baofeng BF-F8HP is a HAM radio and technically isn't approved for use on FRS/GMRS frequencies even if you have a GMRS license (available from the FCC without any test for $35/10 years). Using the F8HP on GMRS frequencies is technically a violation of FCC regulations but according to their own records of actions taken, nobody has ever been fined or imprisoned for merely transmitting on those channels with unapproved equipment unless they were also intentionally doing something to create problems for other users. I'm not saying it's okay to use it on FRS/GMRS frequencies; I'm just saying that nobody has ever been punished just for doing that. Of the radios on this list the Baofeng BF-F8HP with an aftermarket Nagoya NA-771G antenna would probably give you the best results. There is a plethora of HAM walkie-talkies similar to the Baofeng, most of them more expensive, some of them arguably better but the Baofeng is a good "bang for the buck." In your case, since you already have the UV-82, I would just put on the Nagoya antenna and call it good. That's the long answer. The short answer is that there's no frequency within the practical range you listed that will predictably work better than any other.

The FCC very rarely actually does this merely for talking on a band you aren't supposed to (unless it's like ATC or something, which is in a band the Baofeng can't do) That being said they make pretty poor walkie talkies since you have to program them and whatnot.

This video is terrible. A radio like a Baofeng isn't a "walkie talkie". It requires a license to use on most of its frequencies. Someone could easily pick one up and interfere with emergency services all over the world. You may want to consider the misinformation you put out. Even if you use the Baofeng radios on FRS frequencies like most walkie talkies use then you are still breaking the law. The other radios in the video are fine but do not buy a Baofeng to use as a walkie talkie. It could lead to big trouble if you transmit on one with out the proper license and general knowledge to use it correctly. I'm speaking for the US. Not sure of the rules in other places but many countries have similar laws about radio frequencies.
