A line of sight 27km signal test of Motorola and Retevis PMR446 and dPMR446 0.5 Watt walkie-talkies.
This test uses the Motorola XT420, Motorola XT660d, Motorola TLKR T80 Extreme and the Retevis RT24. It was filmed between Selsley Common, UK (elevation 200m) and Tidenham Chase, UK (elevation 200m).
All devices were fully charged and we used PMR channel 07 with a CTCSS of 107.2Hz.
Thanks to Steve for his help.

That's very impressive. Assuming a uniformly spherical radiated output of 500mW by the transmitter, and a surface area of 10cm squared for the receiving antenna, the power received at 27km is just 1/18 of a trillionth of a watt. It's a good thing radio waves don't travel at the speed of sound, otherwise you'd have been waiting 2 minutes and 38 seconds for a response.

I've recently done some investigation into this. Based on reasonably accessible terrain within England / Wales, the furthest these tests can possibly be is about 120km. Past that point, we end up dealing in atmospheric stuff...which is not what I'm testing here. I'm after *reproducible* tests here.

Weather conditions can play a very important part, particularly at uhf / vhf frequencies. I remember in my early days with my ham licence, working a GU4 station in St. Peterport iGuernsey. I was using a good old Trio Tr 2300 on 145 MHz with one watt of r.f. output in the centre of Chichester, West Sussex. The contact was very clear, with just a hint of background noise.

Great radio stations, in the past 70 cm band was reserved only for the most important government services. Mass production of the device at one frequency allowed to reduce costs and you do not have to pay 10-30 times as much for a full band radio, often with a lower sensitivity of the receiver. Wonderful devices, the peak of human scientific possibilities. I greet you :-)

Problem with digital is it can be switch off in times of crisis whereas analogue can only be jammed and that is only if in line of sight so multiple jammers would be needed for blanket coverage in a given area. Food for thought.

Great test. I did a similar test at 23km, from a hilltop of 200m elevation, in the tropics on a highway stretch..It was successful. I used the roof of the vehicle as an antenna range extender. no wires, just as a reflective surface at ground level to compensate for the curvature of the earth.

ITS CALLED "White noise" when a signal is weak and or breaking up just above the noise level, You can do 100KM if not way more depending on the power and clear line of sight path. Very very very important thing is to keep the antenna vertical. Radiation these antennas make is perpendicular to its position. If you keep the radio horizontal all the signal is going to the outer space instead of other radio. XT420 is a professional grade radio so it probably amplified weak signal or at least cleaned up reception.

You should try this is the Mediterranean in the spring. They have something called the Mediterranean effect, which creates a tunneling effect for radio waves in the lower atmosphere, leading to crazy distances. I once stood on a hill on the island of Menorca in April and talked to a guy at the beach in Barcelona. We each had 5-watt radios. The distance was 220 kilometers. The best DX from that location was about 600 km with a person in Genoa, Italy. He was on a proper station, though, with a beam antenna and probably more than 10 watts.

I saw two things that is affecting your contact. One is, some of the noise is a little wind noise across the mic. Two is, moving around from one place to another. Even by turning around and facing a different direction will change the reception. A step in any direction can change the quality of the signal. Could make a bad signal better or a good signal bad. I always find that "sweet spot" and stay there.

Power is so deceptive. Obstruction losses and antenna systems are by far the greatest factor in transmission range. For example, 1 watt is +78 dB. 1/2 watt is +75 dB. Doubling the power only increases the signal by 3 dB for each doubling. A 2 watt transmitter puts out +81 dB. A 4 watt unit is +84. 8 watts is +87. The path loss formula is L = 32.2dB + 20 Log F + 20 Log Distance. Try transmitting from inside a shopping mall and you're luck to make it to the parking lot let alone 27 km.

0.5 watt. I would love to see the Baofeng UV-9R plus, 10 Watt do that. Just 40 quid on a Chinese website. Great test btw👍😊

Hook up any chinese baofeng HT to a power swt meter, and you will see that the max output wattage is not true.

Are those radios using repeaters anthenas installed along the city ? * The noise background noise in the yellow Motorola ones might be due you have deactivated the noise filter, because it's usually disabled to capture weaker signals for a low-battery Tx radio or very hard environmental conditions that makes difficult the signal to travel freely over the air to the other end.

118km if my guess on your location is correct. There is total line of sight between the two locations so, if you're able, I'm going to have to try it using the same limitations as this video. 2 x 0.5W handhelds with fixed antennas.

When I spoke to you the second time last night, I was here - goo.gl/maps/H843odyancM2EK2D9 - I think you said you were in the Clent Hills which would make sense as it's a great run down to Bristol. Were you static mobile or home based?

Any Hand Talkie will work perfectly with 0.5 watt if you are on the top of the mountain.. Try 27km in a urban zone with buildings... will not do the same performance...at all.
@tdcattech
@tdcattech 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I’ve done a few videos on that. My general guide is 100-300m in such circumstances. If one radio has a static spot in a building, that might extend to a 1km but, without a repeater, they’re pretty poor.

would help if both of you kept the antennas vertical. cross polarization weakens the signal.

Good test 0.5w could be over range than there. if the one station is high elevation than the other station For exam, using 50w mobile stations on ground that 200miles away neither copy, but flying airplanes on 2000feet either copy very very clear

I recently purchased the XT180 part of a 2pack, it was £75 reduced from £150, the XT180 is the sister set to the T80, they're identical except the T80 is yellow with black strips and the XT180 is Black with yellow strips, it is good to know they are capable of 27km but its a shame its not great at 10km and less, in heavily built up areas and large warehouse environments they are only capable of 1km, i have been trying to find out if i can remove the antenna to replace it for a higher range antenna, but sadly i think the standard might be glued on to prevent tampering.

Shows noise is environmental. RF noise is also low during power outages. A blackout is great for testing SHTF comms.

In real, everyday use, the range of PMR446 is a few hundred meters. I've never tested in a forest though. Maybe 1km, terrain allowing? Just a guess.

I can access a 70cms repeater, about 30 miles away as the crow flies, from inside my house, with 200mW. I live 800' asl and have line of sight with it. Your only limitation, on UHF, is the Earth's curvature.
