That's very impressive. Assuming a uniformly spherical radiated output of 500mW by the transmitter, and a surface area of 10cm squared for the receiving antenna, the power received at 27km is just 1/18 of a trillionth of a watt. It's a good thing radio waves don't travel at the speed of sound, otherwise you'd have been waiting 2 minutes and 38 seconds for a response.

I made even longer distance pmr communication, approximattely 50km. From higher altitude, some 800m above sea level, to the town located also on high altitude. If you can achieve to have line of sight at least if there is no serious obstacles, you will be able to communicate at long distances, even more than 50km.

Weather conditions can play a very important part, particularly at uhf / vhf frequencies. I remember in my early days with my ham licence, working a GU4 station in St. Peterport iGuernsey. I was using a good old Trio Tr 2300 on 145 MHz with one watt of r.f. output in the centre of Chichester, West Sussex. The contact was very clear, with just a hint of background noise.
@MladenMijatov
@MladenMijatov 5 жыл бұрын
Very very very important thing is to keep the antenna vertical. Radiation these antennas make is perpendicular to its position. If you keep the radio horizontal all the signal is going to the outer space instead of other radio. XT420 is a professional grade radio so it probably amplified weak signal or at least cleaned up reception.
@jonmac3995
@jonmac3995 4 жыл бұрын
Yes location and line of sight is the main thing, I regularly receive the data from Weather Balloons on 404 MHz, at distances up to 400 Km, and they transmit only 60 mW. They are of course very high above ground, up to 30000 Metres.

I've recently done some investigation into this. Based on reasonably accessible terrain within England / Wales, the furthest these tests can possibly be is about 120km. Past that point, we end up dealing in atmospheric stuff...which is not what I'm testing here. I'm after *reproducible* tests here.

I saw two things that is affecting your contact. One is, some of the noise is a little wind noise across the mic. Two is, moving around from one place to another. Even by turning around and facing a different direction will change the reception. A step in any direction can change the quality of the signal. Could make a bad signal better or a good signal bad. I always find that "sweet spot" and stay there.

Great radio stations, in the past 70 cm band was reserved only for the most important government services. Mass production of the device at one frequency allowed to reduce costs and you do not have to pay 10-30 times as much for a full band radio, often with a lower sensitivity of the receiver. Wonderful devices, the peak of human scientific possibilities. I greet you :-)

Power is so deceptive. Obstruction losses and antenna systems are by far the greatest factor in transmission range. For example, 1 watt is +78 dB. 1/2 watt is +75 dB. Doubling the power only increases the signal by 3 dB for each doubling. A 2 watt transmitter puts out +81 dB. A 4 watt unit is +84. 8 watts is +87. The path loss formula is L = 32.2dB + 20 Log F + 20 Log Distance. Try transmitting from inside a shopping mall and you're luck to make it to the parking lot let alone 27 km.

Absolutely. I’ve done a few videos on that. My general guide is 100-300m in such circumstances. If one radio has a static spot in a building, that might extend to a 1km but, without a repeater, they’re pretty poor.

Looks like you were doing the same type of experiments testing out FR-S frequencies basically PMR different frequencies instead of 4:40 it's it's 467 MHz yes you can do more than 27 km when it concerns PMR made a test at UBC University of British Columbia from UBC Ombudsman which is 300 feet above ocean a mountain 52 km away calculating of Kursi angle of attack managed to make the contact however the person was carrying his transceiver as well on FR-S basically same power the person I was at 1.5 K above the ocean so basically line-of-sight was almost visible no problem with the curvature of the earth as we lose 6 ft each 5 miles 3 MI the only issue is for it to work how to put the monitor button on off basically listen to the static the squalus was off monitor was on and we managed to get a contact going through the signal look like and sounded like it was a 5 out of 10 they probably would have work with the monitor on however did not want to take a chance this was definitely an interesting testing scenario also with the type of antenna you have the type of transceiver in antenna you're using may also make a big difference point is line of sight altitude are your friends however sometimes and some special circumstances you connect the waves bounce off Hell's or buildings this would work better in VHF definitely managed to transmit the small contact even though they was a hill infront literally in front so there was no way of transmitting a signal without the signal reaching back bouncing true buildings it came in very weak the point is you can do more than 27 km for sure sometimes by modifying the antenna you may also do so however as they say it's not supposed to be done for licensing issue blah blah blah however I've also heard of people Hammer you guys using specific antennas doing a distance of about 300 km however 4D small radios they have a potential of still kicking ass let's think about it this things were designed for like maybe two maybe three miles the fact is we can beat those by calibrating the equipment and having the right pitch angle inputting all variables together height line-of-sight also being outside the city well help RFI to be on the lower noise yes we can on PMR FRS gmrs we can achieve longer distance by pushing the boundaries sometimes we end up having different results thank you for the video

You just can't beat the RT24 price wise, I have 18 of them and never had a problem with a single one of them. And we also use them in bad weather. Would be interesting to see how far you could push the RT24 when changing the output power from 0,5w to 2w. Can be done with the programming cable and the retevis software. I never tried it cause I only use them within a range of 3km.

You should try this is the Mediterranean in the spring. They have something called the Mediterranean effect, which creates a tunneling effect for radio waves in the lower atmosphere, leading to crazy distances. I once stood on a hill on the island of Menorca in April and talked to a guy at the beach in Barcelona. We each had 5-watt radios. The distance was 220 kilometers. The best DX from that location was about 600 km with a person in Genoa, Italy. He was on a proper station, though, with a beam antenna and probably more than 10 watts.

That being said, a Modified Yaesu FT-4 Dual band Ham Walkie Talkie will also 0perate on those frequencies, and put out almost 5 Watts. In a life-threatening emergency it is legal to go outside the Ham Bands to get help. I will NEVER depend on ANY 0.5 Watt Radio in an SHTF event! Also, hilltop to hilltop is not I repeat, NOT a 'Real-World" test for these radios. I would not bet my life on anything less than a 5 Watt Ham Walkie Talkie. Good test, and interesting video. I have, made 38.5 miles from Bridgend, S/Wales into GB3WR repeater in the Mendip Hills on vhf 145.600mhz fm using both my x-30 and a Moonraker 100m (rubber duck) on my Wouxun kg-uvd1p. But my Baofeng uv-5x could hear the rrpeater but failed to open it. I have also spoken into GB3WW repeater on 145.775 mhz in Port Talbot from both Minehead & Weston Super Mare just using the moonraker 100m rubber duck.

Good test 0.5w could be over range than there. if the one station is high elevation than the other station For exam, using 50w mobile stations on ground that 200miles away neither copy, but flying airplanes on 2000feet either copy very very clear

Glad you liked it! These take a fair bit of effort to film so it's great to get positive feedback. 50km+ gets tricky due to logistics and finding a clear frequency but I already have a few ideas. :-)

@@tdcattech well channel 9-16 are free most of the time due to nobody else really owning a radio that has all the 16 frequencies available now the retevis rt40 makes use of the new 16 channel frequencies most of the time 8 are used for anologue and the 9-16 for digital but the rt40 also does anologue on 9-16

Hi I bought one of the Motorola "XAP0085BDGAA" XT180 and I would like to know what is difference between XT180 and T80 or would it be better if I pay the extra for the T80 Extreme? I'm buying these Radios to connect to some older model Motorola at work so I can have my own Radio and better signal, this is just to give you a idea of what I'm using them for.

ITS CALLED "White noise" when a signal is weak and or breaking up just above the noise level, You can do 100KM if not way more depending on the power and clear line of sight path. I have worked stations 500 miles away with 1/4 watt on UHF as long as you have line of sight! otherwise great video guys! thanks for posting! 73 DE KD6SBR

Not because of a clear path or a high ground because you have a high quality radio and the most important is you're place is using what we called REPEATER.... Its loud and clear sir... Your signal is good because of repeater .. frequency and channeling
@ElectronicNoobBlog
@ElectronicNoobBlog 5 жыл бұрын
XT660d outperform many commercial 1watt radios because RF input output section is tuned specify for PMR466 with is very narrow. Commercial radios need wide RX-TX range like 400-500Mhz and that's require to be more broadband. I hope You will make video showing real advantage of dPMR of XT660d. Find a spot where You can hear hissing / static on analog and than switch to digital without ANY background noise, because right now people get miss conception that dPMR perform worst than analog because need to use vocoder before sending digital data on narrow channel.
@tdcattech
@tdcattech 5 жыл бұрын
My experience with dPMR is exactly as you would expect from digital at this bitrate. Dreadful audio quality but this is massively offset by the lack of background noise up to the point of failure. However, you also lose a small amount of coverage compared to analogue. The XT660d will begin to fail sooner than an analogue radio. It's only a small amount but my testing left the XT660d unusable about 5-10% sooner than say that XT420 simply because the data stream fails and you receive *nothing*. In a repeater environment, digital is clearly the way to go.

@@tdcattech Thank You for reply, that's very interesting because we have different results, only one thing I can think off is signal to noise ratio, in place where I live (city) and done test i have lot of QRM that are interfering off low signal transmissions, in that conditions my results was that inaudible analog make perfectly clear digital. I think that's why our results are different. Are on XT660d digital squelch level adjustment in software? Maybe that's also preventing some packets being cut-off ( can see You have programming cable on other video on XT420) ?
@tdcattech
@tdcattech 5 жыл бұрын
That's definitely worth checking. I didn't really consider that with digital but there could be a setting related to that to completely reject transmissions that may become difficult to understand. We're only talking a minor drop in range though as this is radio to radio in a built up area so the coverage is not great anyway.
