"Have you ever wanted to change yourself to become a better person? *don't* - " 😂 😂 😂 😂 for real though as someone with adhd, this is like, actual medical advice you'll get from therapists--don't force yourself to change because it will never work-willpower alone is rarely enough, change your surroundings and routine and build new habits and things will fall into place more naturally; this man knows his stuff!

Seems like really dangerous advice if you abstract "systems" to be anything outside your direct sphere -- as it could lead to inaction, or worse, oppression of others à la "I don't have to change my habits, I'll just force other people to change theirs!" I'd argue that the advice in this video _is_ changing yourself anyway. It's changing your own habits by changing your own living space.

Okay, so I took your advice. I am a wife and mom, and I enjoy playing video games. I have a desk where I play games on my pc, located in the living room. I can get a little too caught up in it sometimes and feel disconnected from my family and the environment while I'm enjoying my hobby. I also have a tendency to snap at people when they interrupt me while I'm gaming. Resolution: Be kinder to my husband and kids when they ask for my attention. Don't get so hyperfocused on my game that I lose connection with the people who matter. Solution: MOVE MY DESK SO IT DOESN'T FACE THE WALL WITH MY BACK TO THE ENTIRE HOUSEHOLD. I moved my desk into the command position - literally just dragged it 8 feet over so my back is to a wall, instead of to the room. I can see all the pathways through the room, so I'm not startled by people coming up behind me and thus can be more pleasant! I can also see everything going on in the house, which helps keep me connected to the family and well engaged with them while still enjoying my favorite hobby. Somehow, the change actually made the living room more spacious - plus, it contained my clutter between the desk and the shelves behind. What an amazing change for the new year, and it was so easy. Thanks, Feng Shui guy!

I love how forgiving - and practical - this is. Doesn't need to be super tidy all the time, as long as the mess is somehow contained and doesn't stop you from inviting friends etc. Actually.... I have ADHD and taking care of my home is soooooo difficult. For a while I managed to keep my kitchen in order, ONLY the kitchen - but that much of an area I was able to keep up, it was easier to maintain when the base level was a tidy space, and it was motivating. If I had spread that same effort all over there wouldn't have been any noticeable difference and no (semi)permanent change. With this strategy I can try to slowly spread out the clean space. I had a "relapse" but now trying to make progress again. Only needs a few weeks of lower mood or being sick and everything just EXPLODES... ADHD, depression, chronic illness and being a single mom is not a great combo.
@kin2naruto

If your children are at least 2.5 years old... teach THEM how to clean up. Use the time you need to spend anyway organizing the rest of your house to explain "why" each item belongs in its spot. Clean WITH your kids at a set time. You get a clean house - and they learn a valuable life skill!
@carolineramage7480

Oh I really feel for you.....that's a REALLY tough gig you've got there. Remember yours and your child's well-being and relationship are the most important things here. These values are SO hard to claim in a society that puts perfection and image as the hallmarks of achievement and normality. If you practice the value of true well being it may free you from the toxic pressure of so called "normal" society. You can only do you 🙏 and that is enough. Caroline Winkler has a great video called, "Why is my house always a Mess". Might help? Could you reach out for some practical help? Some kind of government subsidised home care? Or ask your local church if someone could help you with the house? Just some ideas, I hope they are of some help. All the best. xx

I have the exactly opposite problem. I can keep the rest of the house, kinda. And my kitchen is a mess. Now I discovered I'm more motivated to do the dishes in the morning, without eating. Same. And “practical” tips from normies are super aggravating- as in you think I’m stupid??? 😡 Esp if the children have ADHD as well. I do find having systems and routines for the basic stuff really helps, even if they are unorthodox. I.e. I don't have enough rooms to have a dedicated office, nor is the hectic living room suitable, but I didn't use my desk because it was in an inaccessible corner, and working from my bed was interfering with both work and sleep. I have adhd. A month ago, my apartment was a nightmare, with piles of stuff everywhere that I'd have to jump over to get anywhere, and all kinds of unused furniture. Then I discovered these videos. Using things I learned, I rearranged my furniture and decluttered. For the past couple weeks, my apartment has been surprisingly easy to maintain, I use ALL the seating, and there is no longer anything sitting on the floor with mysteriously unused drawers and shelves around it. I've struggled MY WHOLE LIFE with this. Now I finally have a genuine, deliberate area for each of my things/activities to belong in, and a system to ensure that anything out of place easily finds its way back to where it goes. As it currently stands, this has to be the longest I've managed to maintain my space without outside help.

I just want to say, thanks so much man! I discovered your channel just two days ago and after binge-watching a number of your shorts and videos, I spent the day re-arranging my home working space in the living room as well as other parts of the living room (and did some much-needed sorting at the same time). Now I have a nice interior-facing workspace instead of staring at the wall all day, and I feel more in command already, not to mention I opened up the living room space so I now actually feel like using it. It's not perfect but is a definite immediate improvement. I just bought your book as a show of support and look forward to reading it.

wow! this is the advice that americans of my generation need to hear. no one taught us that the home is where habits are built and so we often ignore our homes and struggle to have control over our environments, and therefore we struggle to control our behavior. thanks for helping to fix this dilemma

Not changing ourselves but change the surroundings. This so true. I was so addicted to playing games on my laptop so I got rid of my mouse which makes laptop touchpad the only option. Gradually I lost interest in playing games and now can focus on writing my thesis.

“Respectably hectic”!! Omg! My spouse’s desk area is messy and in our living room which we are able to keep pretty tidy so seeing their contained mess I always think it looks “respectably hectic” I just didn’t have such a good phrase to describe it! :)

When I was in college for a bit there was a gym at the school. Which seems cool, but even when I had a class that required me to go workout, it was so difficult to go there because it was still out of the way of where and how I usually spend my time. Fast forward to now and I’m more active than ever and actually losing weight and gaining muscle cause I work full time retail and have to walk/take the bus everywhere since I don’t drive. It ain’t ideal but I’ve been improving my physical health just by adjusting my surroundings in a way

Your way with words is impressive. The title reads like a palm oil company ravaging the rainforest for good conditions, but it is actually a different environment being adressed. You also sprinkle in passive insults that comedically and accurately depicts the figurative problem. Bravo!
