When I was younger I was asked where I saw myself in 5, 10, etc years. I never planned in such a way. It seemed restricting to me. I've never been successful in the way most people aspire to. I've had a comfortable life, mostly. The only time in my life I had a miserable time was when a 'friend ' persuaded me I could be financially richer by investing in her business. I don't need to go into details as to what transpired I don't blame the 'friend '. I'm a 70 year old female who learned that enough is fine.

Rangan ... you have so much to be grateful for. Your parents set you up for success. The motivation behind their hard-work is why you are what you are today. Was yr father unhappy ? His core values/happiness/fulfilment may have been ensuring his children succeed thru providing education, a roof over yr heads, nutrition ect. What is amazing is that thru you trying to figure it all out, you are dedicating yrself to help others to lead more fulfilling lives.. You are your Father's success story. Though he died young, he paved the way for his children. He fulfilled his purpose ...

What self talk would make ourselves happier? Probably gratitude, appreciation, humor, aware of our ego fear and choose to believe in Love and faith about the future, generosity and more easy going attitude. Thanks for your contribution to point out the connection between health and happiness.

Having worked for years at the bedside of the dying leading to death, I can say I never heard anyone expressing themselves like, "I wish I had more time with my family, etc." Not with only days or hours left to live. What I did see over and over again, was a clear attitude surrounding the knowledge that their death was imminent. The conscious were emotionally intertwined in the experience. Some were angry and resentful, some were sad or fearful, some wanted family and friends there, others didn't, some left their place on earth in acceptance and peace, it was all very individual. What I learned from these experiences I had, was that we are all part of a natural cycle, and we should think ahead about how we will approach this when our time comes. So yes, my plan is to live each day in happiness and gratitude for living another day. Because these people I admired. They left a lasting impression on me that I will always be thankful for.

Wow! What you said is very deep. When I was a teenager & young adult I had the mindset that I was going to live forever and death was a long ways away. At middle age I knew one day I would die but I didn't think of death often. Old age death is knocking at my door soon. I'm blessed and thankful for everyday I wake up. To be able to live a long life is a gift.

To be honest, most of this advice only works if you're in an already extremely favorable position (good job, plenty of money, no existential risks). There is a growing part of the population though that simply has no time thinking about the meaning of life or their values, because they have enough to worry about getting food on the plate daily.

All of what I’m learning through reading and listening to about life, meaning, depression and anxiety have a few common denominators. Understanding the self, how we can have agency over the self, and how we can create prosperity through a sense of self awareness. I just wonder if I am overly privileged and that there are people out there who are unable to achieve prosperity because of their environment

The problem is our society is making it harder and harder to have the basic needs met. I make $60k a year and I have to work a second job to fix the car, dishwasher broke, tile in bathroom is coming apart, I haven't had a vacation in over 10 years. Seriously. I think sometimes it would be easier to rent but the cost of rent has almost doubled. I'm not chasing an unrealistic goal, I'm just trying to survive. No Starbucks, McDonald's or any other luxuries here. I have no debt, but I can't seem to save enough before something else breaks.

I mean absolutely no offense here but it sounds like you need to move or something? (assuming you live in the USA where we still actually have choices and freedoms) We live pretty well on way less than that. We are ALL programmed to live a certain way by ads and subliminal messages and also all the cultural expectations laid upon us.....more often than not by the product or service manufacturers themselves. We are also programmed with artificially-contrived peer pressure that if we don't live life in a certain way, then we are programmed to feel like a lesser being or something. Christmas is such an example. The modern day Christmas thing, with it's expensive celebratory requirements, was commercially created. The world over is relentlessly programmed that not celebrating Christmas in such a commercial manner makes us a party pooper, a Scrooge, an outsider. Under the light of truth, the words not so subtle, "If you don't spend money like we say then you are a loser". Even a lot of the financial gurus have created and use their own fabrication of what "living within your means" means. Many of their models are preprogrammed to ensure you stay constantly in debt your whole life. It's designed that way. Cars. We all know that cars, for instance, tend to break down really bad around the 7-10 year mark. Most vehicles are INTENTIONALLY DESIGNED to do that. Planned obsolescence. Why? Because they can make good money off of you selling you a car for a year's pay every ten years. If one is semi-smart, they might get the typical 5-7 year loan paid off just in time to save enough money to put for a down-payment on another fortune eater. That is only one of many currently and intentionally designed financial boxes that people are convinced they have no choices over when the truth is that there are MANY. Cars are not a set of clothing. Forget about stupidly paying anything extra just for the sad need of feeling of prestige or the silly pride in identifying with a particular brand or lifestyle. We are so much better than that. This is programming you need to bust through by shedding light on what pops up in your head and bring it under scrutiny. Breaking out of this particular car thinking 'box, for instance, is easy: Find a ten year or so garaged-kept, pampered, single/private/first owner Japanese made car in good shape inside and out that will do what it is actually intended to do, which is to get you comfortably and safely from one location to another. The Japanese are one of the few people that still use the quality design and control business model that was introduced by an American back decades ago. Expect that 'used' Japanese car to last around another ten years with proper upkeep and prudent driving. Planned obsolescence is minimized with these vehicles. You can get them for less than $2500 if you look around. Looking around, no matter how long it takes, doesn't cost you a thing. Pay it off quick and then use the car payment money you saved and save it in an emergency car repair/rental/next car account. You will now be paying yourself, not someone else at interest. In time, you will have FLIPPED the tables on these guys and free up TONS of cash, and freed yourself of the leeching bondage of chronic debt. Many of us have never been trained to break through this intentionally exploitative programming by the practice of thought and feeling illumination. As such, they unknowingly build a box around themselves that they think and feel they can't break through or aren't supposed to break through or what have you. The mental excuses we build to sabotage ourselves into keeping the familiar around us in spite of it's toxicity are numerous. We have been trained to lie to ourselves instead of reaching inside ourselves and discover the TRUE possibilities available. I encourage you to realize that, unless you have chains around your wrist, you are a free person and you DO have choices and unless you flat out want to stay in the rut that someone's life choices (it doesn't necessarily have to have been your choices initially) have steered you into, you CAN steer out of this. You can do this!

@@kahyui2486...yes and no. For an average life in "our world" a dishwasher is standart, making our lifes easier when having several kids and when someone has less time, working in 2 jobs. But when you have 2 jobs, you should have more control over your life in the financial part of your life. And yes, often we have no influence in the "financial control" side of our lifes, this IS a fact. It is often when we get older and/or sick, loose the job or have problems in our jobs. Yes, in this case we should focus on parts of our lifes we can still control. Small things.

Thanks so much Dr. Rogan, I am so profoundly grateful for all the words of wisdom. You are magnificent. I started making changes when I was compared to some people or criticized by some others. I looked deeply into my life and noticed there were some definitely toxic relationships I was in due to my own lack of love. I collected mostly the people who were criticize themselves and then pointed the finger at me. I started doing research into Dr. Joe Dispenza, yours, and Dr. Gabore Mate. I noticed my addictive personality traits roots into my childhood and later i adapted some into mine. You don't need to know what's happening 24 hours a day! Just checking the news and our social media apps every so often is more than sufficient. Why do we feel that it is necessary to keep checking? Checking social media is not what I am talking about. You can figure it out all by yourself. You don't need an "app" for that. We kill and destroy in the name of profit and our own survival. It is the very definition of evil. But of course you are just trying to "get by". And if you don't consume everything in sight, someone else will... right? So we are supposed to libe alone, luke me. Be unemployed, only get $450 a week ....on unemployment in California.. . Everybody knows that the more money you have and more happy. You are because you're able to pay your bills, but everybody knows low-income. People are not happy because they cannot pay their bills. They struggle. And the federal poverty limit, it's not been raised in 20 or 30 years. The federal poverty limit makes it impossible for people to get food stamps if they are working part time 30 hrs a week. It's almost like you have to be making 300% of the federally poverty level to be able to make it or 500% of the federal poverty level, because if you're making a 110% if you're making a 120% of the federal. Poverty limit, you're still struggling, but according to d. PSS. You make too much money. And you can't get help with food stamps. Because one thousand eight hundred dollars a month in unemployment in california is too much

Happy Solstice and Season's Greetings for All you Celebrate at this time of Year!
