Oh wow I have to show my husband this. How easy it is to mix the soil and repot an avocado tree and get it to grow. Well with him it might not. Lol 😅 because he don't listen and he kills almost any fruit tree we have. I think he over fertilize it or don't water enough. Thankyou for sharing your video.
@TheElsinoreGardener
@TheElsinoreGardener 3 жыл бұрын
The soil is the main thing, these big box stores soil is a wood chip based soil and not a mineral based soil like these plants want. Also, fertilize a very little bit at first and just on top. Don’t mix compost and fertilizer into all the soil. It only goes on top. Use a few inches of mulch and water often

@TheElsinoreGardener

ajmal31 The top pot is my favorite soil. It is a permanent soil that won’t shrink or break down. It is made from peat moss, sand, pumice and charcoal. It allows great air flow into the soil and has a PH of 6.5. Perfect for avocados. I only add a few amendments when I use it. I like your videos, show more grafting follow ups.

Hi Elsinore. Great video to follow. Can you tell me if I could use a raised bed to transplant my avocado tree? Raised bed is equivalent to pot except that it can not be moved. @TheElsinoreGardener
@TheElsinoreGardener 2 жыл бұрын
You can use a raised bed. Remember 90% of avocado roots are in the top 12” of soil so make it wide enough and above the ground level as high as the amount of soil you have to backfill the raised bed. I like at least 12” above ground level

Esu R Planting in compost will lead to oxygen depletion in the soil over time and the plant will begin to decline. If you can transplant it into a more mineral based soil it will love you for it.

I bought a 5 gallon gem avocado from a nursery. I want to put it in a bigger pot. If it was you, what size pot would you transfer it to? I don’t know what kind of soil the gem tree is in but it does not look sandy. Can I put the Top Pot potting soil around the tree like you did in your video? Also, would you pot up at any time even if the weather is warm? I’m a newbie and don’t want to do anything that could kill the tree. I keep reading that young avocado trees are delicate and sensitive. Any advice is welcomed. Thank you.

If you plan on eventually putting it into the ground in a year or two put it in a 15. If you want to keep it long term in a container I would just transplant it once into a very large container. Hello, I recently received a Joey Avocado. Does this method work for this type of tree. When's a good time to transplant on ground, when the trunk turns to green to brown or the thickness of the trunk. This is my 3rd avocado tree...one died of over watering on ground and the other the Texas heat toasted it. 3rd time the charm I hope.
@TheElsinoreGardener

This works for all avocado trees you want in a pot. I wouldn't grow Fuerte in a pot though. If you have intense heat think about building a shade structure for those months when the tree is young. I build shade structures every year

@nomadrhodes - kind of late, but… you can find 25gal pots at hydroponics store, often. Not a lot of places are making 40gal any more. Those were originally for the Marijuana growers, before they switched to greenhouse growing, so they’ve downsized. I just drove over 100 miles to a place in Ukiah, CA that had 40gal. nursery pots. They may still have, selling on eBay in fact. Picked up 15 to hold a bunch of trees I have, (I’ve got black walnuts, so dealing with juglone poisoning in my soil).

I’m no to sure that they are not connected in the root or roots. Do you have any advice? One is much smaller than the other.lthankyou, Marlyn from Ca zone 9b

Avocados don’t like their roots to be messed with, so I would try soaking the soil in a bucket of water and try to separate them that way. I made a video on that. Check it out.

It can but more than likely it will not. If you want to grow from a seed you can graft a known variety on to it and get a know fruit taste, sooner than waiting many years to find out if a seed tastes good or not.

I have so many questions... I really want my avocado tree "Avvy" to survive. I'm in Central Texas 8b growing zone. It's been dry and hot for months now. Avvy is on my back porch so it only gets morning sun. I have no idea what kind it is. My daughter has been growing it from a seed that we got from an avocado at the grocery store. It's about 6ft tall and probably 2 or maybe 3 years old now. We recently went out of town and I left all of my plants in bins with water, but we had truck trouble on the way home and it took a few extra days to get back. The water had dried up and Avvy looked sad and droopy. Watered it and it perked up. Now 2 weeks later and frequent watering the leaves are all turning brown. It does have new growth that looks healthy at the tips of the branches and the top. I was going to put it in a bigger pot, but wanted to watch some videos first. It's currently in maybe a 5 ish gallon pot and I want to put it in a much larger pot. There's Avvy's back story and here are my questions. 1. Should I wait for this heat wave/drought to pass before repotting? 2. I don't want my tree to get much taller. Do I cut the top off? How do I determine where to trim it? 3. How long can it stay in a pot? I want to take it with me if I move from here. Ok, I'll not continue at this point because I'm not even sure you'll see this. Sorry for this being so long, but I do appreciate any help.
@TheElsinoreGardener

I would put it in a bigger pot, add mulch and keep it out of direct sunlight. Pinch off the top few inches down of the main growing stem. It should eventually start to branch out. Go to a 20 gallon container and keep it in there a few years.

Abi Nor-Mac I think you can grow them long term in a large container. You can also keep them trimmed to the height you need to fit the location. Remember in a container the tree relies on you for consistency in food and water. For long term I wouldn’t use less than a 40 gallon container and that may not be practical on a balcony
