The shooter drew images that would have immediately called for suspension in any of our school districts. The parents refused to take him home, unbelievably irresponsible. If the parents refused to take him home, police normally would have been called to take the student to the station. A locker, backup and body check would have been done. WHY WAS HE SENT BACK TO CLASS FREE AND CLEAR???

This all so sad. That young boy was trying to figure out why his mind was having the thoughts it was having. He knew it wasn’t right or normal but he couldn’t help it. He tried on numerous occasions to get himself help but no one listened. He was 15 years old. 15 year olds still need their parents to do things for them. A lot of things. His parents were responsible for making calls to get him help. I feel bad for the boy and no.. that doesn’t take away from the sympathy I have for the shooting victims and their families. Very well said. I, of course, know that his actions caused the death of, and pain for so many people. I just feel like this kid knew he should not have the thoughts he was having. He most definitely was showing signs of a serious mental illness that he couldn't control. He asked for help from his parents because there was no one else he could ask. Mainly his own mother, who ignored him as she seemed to do most of the time. It's just so heartbreaking that she did nothing to help her son who desperately needed her.

Sound like to me, after the meeting with counselors, the mom was more worried about her son doing himself harm if alone. I just wonder while they had him in the office, based on the drawings, why didn't they search his backpack, his person, and his locker.Kids who do things they know are wrong, if they sense they re going to get caught, they will hide stuff on themselves. I watched a video where this teen girl was in the counselors office with other staff because another student said they saw her with a gun. They didn't find anything in her backpack, but when the police came, they found it in her pants. If they weren't going to search him, they should have sent him home.

There were so many opportunities to stop Ethan. He was begging his parents for help. He asked to go to the Dr as early as April. His mother actually laughed (according to a text Ethan sent to his one and only friend). The school failed also. They should have insisted that Ethan be taken home. The backpack was not searched. The biggest error is why would his parents buy their troubled 14 yo a gun? This is heartbreaking.

I couldn't believe she kept repeating those words. I really wanted the judge to tell her to shut up and not make mention of killing herself in any fashion unless she wanted to be held in contempt of court. The judge had already ruled on not being overly emotional. The defense stating what she had was beyond overly emotional. It was emotionally abusive. How does a rational minded adult not feel themselves uncomfortable with saying what she said, even if it were a slip of the tongue. A rational adult would have apologized and been genuinely remorseful for the slip of the tongue. She's been anything but rational. She seems unhinged.

Be that as it may, today is the mom’s judgement day not the school. She also had a responsibility to make sure he didn’t have that gun knowing he had been in a downward mental health spiral for months and had been idealizing the very gun they bought a few days earlier all during school. Any reasonable parent would have at least asked where the gun was and taken him out of school to get treatment. The parents neglected, ignored, and even laughed at the state of his mental health for months. I believe “Suck it up” is what he was told

... are you a licensed clinician? Or a teacher? Because that is fairly common among teenagers. Compulsive or repeating or fixating thoughts are relatively normal and *alone* not reason enough for an outsider with no additional information to come to the conclusion that a hold is necessary. The parents, however, absolutely should have known. I don't think this is primarily on the counselor in this situation, unless that person saw this kid on a regular basis and had a baseline set of behaviors to make judgements on. Restricting someone's freedom is a last resort that most people do not want to rely on, not least of all because of possible lawsuits. Hindsight is always 20/20, but we shouldn't just be locking up kids at the first sign of trouble without appropriate context.

It is Ethan's parents' job to ensure his mental well-being, but it is the school's job to ensure their students' safety while they are on campus. The school is LEGALLY responsible for keeping all of the children in their custody safe. The school needs to be held accountable in some way. At the very least, Ethan and his property should've been searched. At the most, he should've been made to leave the school until he completed some sort of program for depicting violent images on his schoolwork. He displayed what was possibly some of his most troubling pre-shooting behavior right there at the school, and the school witnessed it; therefore, the school was excellently placed to stop this tragedy, as well. What the parents did after the school took their own actions and made their recommendations would've been on the parents, but how the school reacted in the face of concerning behavior that THEY observed on their premises is most certainly on them. They are not responsible for Ethan's overall mental health, but they ARE responsible for making sure they take reasonable actions to ensure he doesn't kill other students on their premises. In many cases, the school couldn't have predicted that student might shoot up a school, but in this case, They had the warning in writing and did absolutely nothing. If this were Sweden or Australia, I might understand the lack of concern for security, but this is America - the home of 400 million guns and school shootings. The school should've been FAR more vigilant than this in the face of a hint as strong as the one that was served to them on a silver platter. Let the parents be held responsible for their negligence, but let the school also be held responsible for THEIR inaction when the child was on their premises displaying some of his disturbing behavior.

Here is the thing. When a parent goes for mental help for their child they are scrutinized, disbelieved, and made to be the enemy. We have fought for 7 years for our adopted 15 year old daughter to get adequate mental help. We have told people over and over that one day she will kill someone. We were threatened by CPS to take our other children away, we were told that we just needed to set boundaries (we have always done that), I had one ER doctor tell me that it was useless to take up a bed for a psych eval because it takes too long. Finally after seven years,someone residential placements someone is listening. It's not so easy to get help with major issues like this. So many school shooters were on medication. We need to ask the bigger question....... Why do we have such a huge mental health crisis among your youth in America.

Good mental health is difficult to find. It is out there, but money or very good insurance is needed to get it. Most are not like you, who kept on until finding what was needed. You don't really "fight" for adequate care in the US, you shop and pay for it. The ER isn't where you go for more than a tranquilizer, it's not a solution. If you want help, you hire a psychologist and you go 3 times a week. If that professional feels the child should be in a hospital, they can have them admitted for their own safety (or that of others). It's not a simple process. But you need to seek the right professionals and be willing to pay. Many disorders are hard to diagnose in children. I've worked in the psychiatric field for decades.

School told Jennifer to get Ethan help in the next 48 hours and sent him back to the classroom. If the school sees a drawing that shows a gun, person with bullet holes in them, a bullet with the words above "blood everywhere" in today's world that is a major RED FLAG! So if the school showed little concern, "get him help in 48 hours" which Jennifer said she would. But 2 hours later, Ethan shot 4 people. I don't understand why the school is not being held liable?

If your household includes minors, and you have guns with less restrictions on gun and ammo access within that household than a normal househild with children would have on access for the children to the liquor cabinet, that in itself should carry criminal liability. Minor goes on shooting spree with that unsecured gun, I don't see how parent / guardian would be less liable for that then someone just sitting in the backseat of a car while that car / driver and / or other passengers are involved in a robbery / shooting or similar.

Here's the thing. My son drew army guys and guns and monsters all the time. I had the cops show up to our door because his friend gave him a copy of that "cookbook" and he had it in his school locker. We had guns in the house. Never once did I think my son would do something bad...thank God he didn't. Looking back on it now, while we did talk to him and have a good relationship, ..we probably should have been more concerned. But, as parents, you don't think your child will do something like that. Our situation was a little different because we were living paycheck to paycheck, no heath insurance. They must have had the resources to get him some help if they could afford horses. Also, we didn't buy our son a weapon..but still...and I'm not trying to make excuses for them but hindsight is 20/20 and I think many can relate to being caught up in daily life and not realizing how bad a situation actually is or can be. Not being snarky, genuine question. Did your son also add captions to pictures of guns saying things like "The thoughts won't stop. Please help me" and "my life means nothing" and "the world is dead"? And also next to the pic of the gun a picture of a body with what looks like bullet holes lying in what looks like meant to be a pool of blood? There was a LOT on that math paper. I wondered if the kid was really addressing the TEACHER saying "Please help me" because he already figured out by then his parents were too self involved to pay attention to him. "Army guys and guns" at least makes sense in context. Lots of kids draw monsters. But with all due respect unless your son also wrote explicit requests for help and wrote morose captions to his violent drawings, I dunno, I feel like it's a totally different scenario. They saw this. They knew before buying him a gun that he was literally hearing voices, and thinking about dying. Confronted with his math paper where he'd drawn a gun, a dead person in a pool of blood. written "the world is dead" etc. To me even if he'd never so much as hinted he might do this, because of the timeline of the math paper confrontation and when the shooting happened, she might put two and two together. I certainly am not wanting to give any benefit of the doubt to this sorry excuse for a mother, but that seems plausible to me.

It’s a shame that they didn’t care enough to seek help for their son. We are all capable of murder just depends on the circumstances and in this case this kid was mentally ill and needed help and there were so many signs of him screaming for help but nobody heard him! I hope everyone who failed him gets punished for it but there is no real justice ever in cases like these because the adults are almost never held accountable. Tragic all around. May those who passed because of this shooting rest in peace. 💔

I’m sorry but my heart breaks for Ethan. I absolutely understand he did something heinous, and I am from the area. My daughter lost a friend in this. But this kid was crying out for help, his parents didn’t care. He carried this act out the day his parents came to the school and wouldn’t take him home or right to a clinic, to me that was his breaking point, he felt at that point there was no longer hope, there was no one who cared and he felt hopefulness that no one was there to help him fight these demons. I personally feel bad they taken him immediately that day to get help, his whole life would have changed. I mean they didn’t even hug him or show him any love. It’s extremely sad all the way around💔

He told them for months that he was hearing voices and seeing things. This wasn't the first time the school had advised them of bizarre images and writings. On a night Ethan texted scared that he was seeing things - having hallucinations or delusions - mom knew and chose to pickup beer and get drunk while riding her stupid horse. Those texts weren't deemed admissible but I saw the argument before they brought in the jury. These parents didn't give a shit and knew full well he wasn't safe around guns. They bought him one anyway and didn't even bother to lock it away. They're idiots.

In MI murder is an automatic life without parole sentence. He didn’t meet the qualifications for “no guilty by reason of insanity.” There would’ve been no point.

@@autism_momma_LosAngeles …..it is because we have stopped treating guns as tools. People think they are cool. They are just gun. I have a large family and we live in a rural area in Texas. My parents can be strict but usually are funny and are not bad. However, gun safety you don’t even get a warning on. When we go hunting, we are not allowed to take our phones. Your focus is gun safety (keeps you and everyone else safe). My brother, he was 15 at the time, snuck his phone on a hunting trip. It rang and he thought he was far enough ahead no one would know he had it. My dad yelled for him to stop walking, walked up to him, made my brother give him his phone, sent him to the truck to wait (about 4 hours) while we went hunting. My dad beat his ass when we got home, refused to let him hunt for 6 months and took his phone for a while. No one was hurt and my brothers gun was not loaded at the time but still, gun safety rules were broken. So many people are terrified of guns that their kids think they are cool and edgy. My brother was the opposite. He was lackadaisical. I would not treat a running chainsaw like it was cool or edgy. Why should anyone treat a gun that way? All the Crumbleys had to do was secure the firearm. For want (or not want, I guess) of a trigger lock, 5 people are dead, Ethan is in prison, Jennifer on trial and James in jail, waiting. It’s all so sad. Still, the parents have some responsibility here, I believe.

The prosecutor talks way too fast. His words stumble over each other. The defense attorney can't keep up, and her monologues are slow and pedantic. The judge needs a microphone and needs to enunciate more clearly. None of these people sound the least bit professional. It all sounds a complete mess. What's their problem? I've listened to Depp/Heard, Murdaugh, Vallow/Daybell, and Adelson and others who all speak methodically and clearly so I don't see why these people can't get with the program in their courtroom. Sheesh!

@deniseblackburn no they wouldn’t have found the gun because it wasn’t in his bag. He hid the gun in the bathroom weeks prior and was planning this. The parents knew their son was “seeing and hearing demons,” and were notified by the school that they were concerned for his mental health and that he was researching ammunition on school computers. They STILL bought their mentally ill minor son a gun that he then hid. this is illegal. The gun was gone for weeks and they didn’t notice?!

I'd love to know what's in that gigantic drink cup we first see her carry into her workplace at 7-something a.m. and then she STILL has it the next time we see her. It reminds me of a bodycam clip I saw where cops were called to a school bec someone was concerned a teacher was drunk. It was well before noon. Spoiler alert : yes she was drunk. They found out after nearly an hour of her swearing to the cop and principal that she'd NEVER drink at school. It emerged that she always carried around one of these giant cups and always had one on her desk for her "tea." It was not tea. I guess men who are hardcore daydrinkers have their own methods but this thing of carrying around these gigantic cups (or not the big Stanley cup craze I guess) filled with either wine or alcohol that they sip continuously all day is a thing for certain kinds of women. Ditto vodka in water bottles. It's clear and has no real smell. I only started following this case but I sure wonder about that giant cup this upstanding mother seemed to have glued to her hand in these video clips. "Sad" is one word for it, yes. There are other words too.
