Why buy the M1 MacBook Pro instead of the M1 MacBook Air? I have at least 3 reasons! I think Apple may have messed up big time this year. The good thing is that they released two extremely powerful laptops; the bad thing is that they released two very similar laptops. I can only think of 3 reasons why the average user would even consider the MacBook Pro over the MacBook Air - and the fan is not one of them.
I have here is the cheapest model of the MBA, so the M1 chip with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage which in the US costs right under $1k and on this side I have the base model MBP, again with the M1 chip, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage and this thing set me back $1300.
Normally, I would just lean toward getting the better device, but I just don’t know if I can justify spending $300 more for the MacBook Pro when there are some things I like better about the MacBook Air?

I thought long and hard about what I would mainly use my laptop for, and aside from zoom conferences, making presentations, and typing up some papers, there's honestly not much else I would do on it. I have an iPad for most of my reading and note taking, and watching your video honestly saved me a lot of cash. Made my purchase two weeks ago, and I'm extremely happy with it so far!

Thanks for your review! I went from a 7 year old MacBook Pro 15 and bought the base M1 Mackbook Air hoping I would like the smaller screen and leaving the MacBook Pro. After watching the video, the Air 13" seemed like it had the specs for what I needed. Immediately after unboxing the M1 Air, I knew I wasn't going back to a larger and heavier MacBook Pro. The gold is a rose gold and so pretty! The keyboard is much easier to use. I think the air is so cute, and actually like the smaller screen. The speaker is louder and better than my older Macbook.

First time MacBook user. I did originally look at the Air because I knew for what I was using it for, the Air would be fine, and it was cheaper. As it turns out, I ended up getting a refurbished Pro 512gb for cheaper and I love it. The Touch Bar comes in handy once in a while but I don't rely on it much, like I knew I wouldn't which is why I originally was going for the Air. I don't know if the two hour battery difference between the two would have been that noticeable though

Very slight noticeable difference in microphone output/feedback. The MacBook Air had a slight distant-like feedback where as the MacBook Pro was slightly more clear & present. Yes, definitely heard a difference in sound between the two. Air has less peaks and lows, smoother sound. Pro has Higher peaks, it is louder and crisper in sound.

Great comparison - I bought both, used at reduced prices, but in great shape. I like the fantastic portability of the Air for everyday use. The Pro is set up as a desktop workstation, usually attached to a 27" 4k monitor that the wife more for her hobby and crafting work. Both are great machines.

I bought the MBA and absolutely love it. I went with the 8 core GPU and the 1TB SSD and it's handled everything I could throw at it. Sure it cost more than the base model, but I would have upgraded the MBPro similarly, so still saved money. No regrets at all.

Ace! I got my M1 MBP with 16GB and 1TB about a month ago as I like to edit videos, but it was also the only device that was available for me to collect immediately, whereas if I'd ordered the Air it would likely only have just arrived. I love the Touch Bar, you can hold the Fn key and it'll display all the traditional function actions, plus the in-app utilities are amazing. That being said, I'd have chosen the Air if both were available at the same time.

Got a good deal for Pro from Costco. $150 off for the 8gb 512gb which brought it down to just $100 more than the same config as the Air. So I went with the Pro for better charger.. better battery.. better screen brightness

Yes I edit photos, and I have the 8 core GPU, as per the larger SSD Air. So its closer to the pro. I love it, and it will do me for the next five to six years - provided the SSD lasts that long.

Hey, I noticed you do photo editing as well. So, does the macbook air do well with photoshop and lightroom? These are the only two things I need it to work well with for me to be able to make a decision.

@@johanduvernay4533 I use Luminar, and GIMP without issues on my M1 MacBook Air without it even slowing down. The reason I dont use Lightroom, or Photoshop is owing to the subscription model - I dropped out of using Lightroom when my Mac updated and obsoleted it. However I use a Nikon Df and Leica X typ 113 (both 16MP files), Which do not produce big files for digital camera's - so they may not be an issue with my MacBook Air. If you use camera's that produce large files, perhaps just buy the model with the memory upgraded to 16GB - one of my Leica Q2, (47MP files) owning friends did this, and use the Adobe set up - he reports no issues and produces some fine images. I hope this helps, and I am happy to answer other M1 related questions - I love mine, wouldnt be without it - performs well, battery life is stunning, and does what I need without difficulty.

If you’re a designer who can’t wait until the end of the year for the new releases, imo get the Intell 16” 1TB, 16gig stock while it’s discounted on Amazon / John Lewis. The potential performance perks from the M1 are W/e, the biggest issue now is the screen size. 13” to 16” is a noticeable jump and more important to my workflow, especially if you’re on the road (post COVID ofc). Laptop noise perks are ‘shrug’, if you design with music. Honestly, the only reason I was tempted to wait was the promised USB ports and 2015 style keyboard but the 2019 16” is fine with a £10 dongle. If you’re a FT video or motion designer, I would say get a PC although the current Gfx shortage makes that a bit of a nightmare atm.

Thanks for the video! Very informative and pretty much nailed all the important stuff. Although u talked about the battery life and how they differ, it would have been nice to see an irl comparison where u turn on a bunch of videos and/or programs and time them so we can see how good they actually perform by showing us a fast forward timelapse mb :)

This was super helpful! Having to upgrade my 2018 MacBook Air, which still runs perfectly fine but since my brother starts college I took the opportunity to give him mine and upgrade to the M1 chip. I'm super indecisive since I've regretted multiple times that I didn't get the pro the last time because I've needed better performance, but now the difference seems super minor. I have to say that brightness is very important to me since I love to work outside BUT the shape of the Air was so comfortable that I really don't wanna change it. The typing experience is great because of the tiny edge. How noticeable will the difference be is the last thing I am taking into consideration to make my decision...
