Subscriber Tip: if you are leaving your Model3 in the garage say for 3-6 months while you are away plug in your car, set the charge to 50% then you are good. Also don’t keep going on you Tesla App to check the status of your car as the battery goes into hibernation mode when you open the app it wakes up the car. So best to leave it alone. #6 when regen is on "low" you're still not using the brakes very much and they will still last for a very long time. The problem with EVs is brake *disuse" - if you don't use your brakes enough, they'll actually rust. I failed a PA inspection on my Ford Focus Electric because the rotors rusted because with regen I don't use the brakes much. You still need to use and service your mechanical brakes.

How about a feature where if the car is detecting that it's "Home" and it still isn't plugged in 15 minutes (for instance, or an hour, whatever), it'll send you a notification on the Tesla app to remind you to plug it in? In the winter, when you start out driving with a cold battery, you have little to no regen which means when you come to stop signs and traffic signals and you apply the brake pedal, you are using your brakes. In all fairness, dome lights and running lights are all LED and use maybe a couple of watts max. The power draw of those is so small that you couldn't even tell after an hour if all the lights were on or off when you charged the car for an hour.
@CfTesla4 жыл бұрын
Ya it’s mostly the climate control but it’s just something to think about done you think? Hey thanks for taking the time to comment!
@redbaron68054 жыл бұрын
@@CfTesla Honestly, the cabin heat is the biggest power draw. Second would be the A/C. The dome lights are LED's and draw about 2W each while when you are charging the car, you are charging it at 7680W with a Model 3 UMC, and at 9600W with a Model S/X UMC (the Model S/X UMC charges the Model 3 faster at 9600W also). So, while you would be of course correct that they use some power, the total power draw would be less than 0.1% of the total and when charging for an hour would therefore save you less than 3 seconds of charging time every hour. The parking lights and even head lights would draw a bit more, maybe around 100W total, but again, that is around 1% to 1.5% of the total power input, so they matter slightly more, but if you are charging the car for an hour the extra drain would cost you less than a minute of charging time (around 50 seconds at 7.68kW and 36 seconds at 10kW). So, because the amounts are so small, the overall effect would be so small that it would be barely noticeable, or about minute of charging time worst case scenario.

@@CfTesla The MCU control unit is running already, which is basically a computer. Excited to see your upcoming series of videos for new Tesla owners--you can bet I'll be saving those for when my day comes. One thing I’m curious about is whether or not Tesla illuminates the brake lights when doing regenerative braking. Pushing the brake pedal alerts drivers behind you that you are stopping. Same thing with hold mode. When you have to keep your foot on the brakes, a driver approaching from behind sees the brake lights. If you are stopped without the brake pedal depressed, do other drivers know what you are doing? It would be like putting an ICE car in park otherwise.

I’ve always had cars with frameless windows, it’s not Tesla specific. Just so you know, it really won’t hurt anything opening the door via the emergency release. Tesla has the warning for this when the release didn’t lower the window a bit to clear the trim, but it does that now. Another don’t is to not keep the mileage screen up, use the percentage screen. Gas gauges in ICE vehicles don’t show mileage, they show a percent of gas in the tank.
@CfTesla4 жыл бұрын
Hey Dan! Good to know about the handle. I had heard mixed reviews on that but they guys at Tesla had told me not to unless of ER so thought I would spread the word. I made this video over 3 weeks before I posted it so a lot has changed since. I definitely use the % gauge now for many reasons.
@Resist44 жыл бұрын
@@CfTesla yes, probably a good idea not to use it unless it's an emergency anyway. And obviously, the window would hit the trim if the car lost all power.
@iheartnintendo4 жыл бұрын
He never said it was Tesla specific, he just said if you own a model 3, don’t do this. Of course there are many vehicles that have frameless windows, like, I don’t know, almost every convertible ever made? Also, what’s wrong with keeping the mileage screen up? True, ICE cars have a gauge but most modern ones also have an indicator that shows the range or miles left until empty. Percentage means nothing if you don’t know how many miles of use you have left. It’s good to offer suggestions but to tell people to “don’t” do something when there is a viable reason to do it is a bit counterproductive. The points he makes in the video are definitely valid.
@Resist44 жыл бұрын
Kevin Duque keeping the mileage screen up is counterproductive by itself because all it will do is give you range anxiety and think something is wrong with your car when you don’t get the published range. People freak out when they don’t get that range, forgetting that so many things effect mileage with an EV. I’m not saying don’t ever look at the range screen, just don’t focus on it.

@johngiannone76944 жыл бұрын
Also, when do and don’t the brake lights come on when the accelerator pedal is released? Speed dependent?
@dorvinion4 жыл бұрын
Regen doesn't use the brakes to slow down, but it does use them to hold the car at a sign/light. The brake lights come on when the car is decelerating by regen based on how quickly you are decelerating. Lightly removing your foot from the accelerator won't necessarily turn them on.
@GregHassler4 жыл бұрын
In hold mode the car will activate the mechanical brakes below something like 8 mph. The brake lights turn on anytime the deceleration of the car is greater than a certain amount. (I think it's federally mandated for safety). It doesn't mean the mechanical brakes are being used.
@redbaron68054 жыл бұрын
Tesla's (Model 3, Model S and Model X) all use an accelerometer to turn the brake lights on when the rate of slow down exceeds a certain G force (something like 0.1G) to warn people behind you that you are slowing down despite not using your brake pedal. I believe all EV"s do that are using regenerative braking and it is a DOT requirement. Of course many EV's use a regen lever or the regen is connected to the brake pedal, so then this will be activated when either one of those is pressed.

One thing I’ve noticed that the cars on either lane left or right when they appear on your screen as a grey blob - they are much to close for you to change lanes - they are like right along side your rear bumper. It would be better if they began to show on the Tesla screens right of left lanes much further back - like time enough to change lanes if you want to. But as it is now, when they appear on the Tesla Screen they are much to close to even consider a lane change.
@CfTesla4 жыл бұрын
The screen renders them from behind much later but heading forward they show for a very long range. However even though they don't show on the screen do to most cameras poining forward they car sensors let the car know whats there. The car changes lanes just about perfectly when I test in about every situation. That is one thing they have got dialed in very well.
@haywoodjablome2344 жыл бұрын
Totally disagree with 5 in very cold or hot weather environments. You can run the climate control off the grid and it saves your battery from having to do so once you unplug. Resistive heating is brutal on range/mileage and the best way to heat a car at 0C or 32F or less is off the grid. I have a Tesla wall connector running at 240v , so I typically get 46-50 miles per hour while charging. Even if I " preheat" the car with seat heaters and reductive heating, I still get 35-40 miles per hour all the while heating the seats and cabin.

Arun Jeyarajah I do believe it gives the best range or at worst it’s a wash because of the regen putting the energy back into the battery. I can one foot drive for hundreds of miles, never touching the brakes if I anticipate traffic slowing or a light changing. Learned to do this years ago in an off road school and it's served me well. You can feather the throttle going down as well as up. Smoothness is the key.

Hi again. I found out how. If you hold the P button on the end of the stock while driving, you will put on park breaks on the backwheels. Sort of like a regen breaking only for the back. Hope I'm not a pest but if anyone has information on how to put the Tesla in 'hibernation' mode for parking the car at airport, that would be great. I plan to be away for a month in February. They do have a "transport' mode could that also be a Hibernation mode??
@CfTesla4 жыл бұрын
From all I have read and seen there is no hibernation mode. The closest you can get is turn off all active systems like Sentry, Standby, and Cabin Over Temperature Protection.
@haywoodjablome2344 жыл бұрын
Just Uber it to airport and leave Tesla plugged in at home. I lose about 2 miles a day if not plugged in . Not 2%, but 2 miles. The large pack keeps the 12v battery charged, so that's where some loss occurs.

This door opening thing is just one of the myriad details that show how little attention Tesla pays to human factors. The fact that brake pedal only controls friction brakes is another: many drivers _don't_ like one-pedal driving, especially those switching frequently from an EV to an ICE car and back. For them, it would be only reasonable that the brake pedal activates regenerative braking first, and only adds friction brakes as necessary. Virtually everybody else is doing that.

@@iheartnintendo No, but I test-drove some and I like them (at the moment the lack of charging at home or at work prevents me from acquiring one). Which does not mean that I am a religious devotee who can't see anything wrong with them. What does it have to do with idiocy of not labeling "front door open" button but putting mechanical emergency open handle at the location one's hand naturally fall, the handle use of which could damage the window seal because it is purely mechanical and does not lower the window when opening the door; or *not* having manual emergency open mechanical mechanism on rear doors; or opening glovebox by touchscreen or voice command (no mechanical button), but _not_ having motorized trunk lid - in which of those two places is motorization more useful? Don't get me started on treating regenerative braking and friction brakes as two separate systems. The driver should be able to configure the car for "one-pedal driving", conventional use of brake pedal or something in between, and the supposedly "intelligent" car should mix two means of losing kinetic energy as necessary (prioritizing regenerative braking, of course). No product is perfect, and this holds for both EVs and ICE cars, of course. I know it is possible to get used to most of the design flaws or features skipped to save costs. But that does not mean I must be blind to them. Being a fawning fanboy is just not my thing. I prefer to think. Tesla will deplete the stock of adoring fans and will have to start selling to average buyers. For that to happen, they will have to start learning from traditional automakers, just as they learn from Tesla in the area of battery management and efficient motor design.

#7 - There's no reason to have your phone out while you're driving. Ever. EVER. Put it in your pocket/purse and take it out when you get where you're going. Your texting/social media fix can wait. It's not more important than the lives you're endangering by selfishly alleviating your own boredom while driving.
@CfTesla4 жыл бұрын
In case you completely misunderstood the video. No one is suggesting having your phone out while driving. But when you get in the car you set it somewhere and I’m merely suggesting don’t set it there.

Oh please, that’s a far reach. All he said was don’t set it on the console and you go into some crusade mode with all sorts of accusations of unsafe phone use while driving. I personally keep my phone out so if at a red light or safely stopped I can check messages, initiate a call, or enter something in the GPS if I need to. Please don’t be that troll who has to find something to criticize.
@iheartnintendo4 жыл бұрын
Also, have you ever hear of something called Apple CarPlay, or Android Auto? Or cars with USB ports? I think these things are designed to, you know, have the phone out and plugged in while in the car. You could probably plug your phone in while it is in your pocket/purse as you suggest, but that might look quite ridiculous and probably not a good idea. You are also assuming quite a number of things in your failed criticism, like 1. The person is using the phone while actively driving, 2. The person using the phone is the driver, 3. The person is “bored” instead of lost and using Waze or Google Maps or on an important phone call or waiting for an important message, 4. The person has a pocket or purse to put it in (not all drivers are women or have pants with pockets that their phone can comfortably fit in while driving. As a matter of fact, the FIRST thing I do when I get in my car after turning it on and buckling up is plugging the phone in and putting it in a safe spot, so I can use CarPlay for music, GPS and phone calls. Cf Tesla, I have a suggestion to add to your list.... DON’T get a Tesla Model 3 if you are someone who doesn’t know how to use technology responsibly!
