I ran into the same problem with the front tow hook. I ordered the same tow pin you tagged in your video and it was causing the same problem as you, then I had a thought that maybe it will go in the rear bumper (where the stock tow pin and hook was) and it did perfectly...that being said I moved the original tow pin that came with the car to the front and it went in perfectly. With all that being said in the end the tow hooks are sitting perfectly with NO washers. Thanks for the videos.

thank you for this. I spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to rig up a spacer so i could fit my shackles to the large tow hook, finally made my own that fits perfectly.... just to find out that the god damn hook sits at 45 on my 23 crosstrek. now onto attempting it to fit at a 90!

Those who are looking to do this on the Crosstrek, order the right part. It's actually 57805FG000.

Can I ask how you ground down the washers? I’ve got a Subaru Crosstrek Sport and am looking to do the same thing. I bought a few washers that fit the pin, but they’re a little too wide to fit that shoulder area before the pin starts threading. I can only get about 3 turns of the tow hook, which is not ideal. Thanks for this video!!

I used a bench grinder and was very careful! I had someone say you could get a piece of steel tubing the right diameter and then cut it to the right length and that seemed like a great idea

Add a 3/4" rubber grommet to the hole. Prevents the tow hook from moving around.

Nice video.......I like the asymmetrical look of it. NOTE: Anti-seize those deep threads, you'll be rewarded if you ever remove. I carry my shackle in my snatch-strap bag. Be safe out there 😷

What did you use to make a hole in the plastic cap?

I used lock tight to keep them positioned properly

Actually it looks pretty good at that angle on the front. It follows the grill line.
@benc.74465 жыл бұрын
Tow hook looks good. You should got to a local Ace Hardware or Tractor Supply and get a 1” deep bushing instead of the washers- you should not need to modify the diameter, you would just need to cut the length to what you want/need.

All but about 1/16”

@@mikeodonnell5476 so what are the washers for and why is your lithium grease not disturbed past what looks like appx. 10mm or so in the video?
@kccollins89945 жыл бұрын
Modify some half thickness washers and then you will attain a different remaining thread count, witch will change the angle.
@mikeodonnell54765 жыл бұрын
This was my original plan but all I had was these, so it’s what I did. If I could find some thinner washers that would be great too.

hey pal, funny I just did this mod... I ended up just painting the stock tow eye black and figured I'd leave it at that without the shackle, since I couldnt find a way to get it straight either! awesome ideas though. Can I bother you by asking what size drill bit is needed for the hole that will fit our factory tow eyes? thanks!
@mikeodonnell54765 жыл бұрын
I used a stepped bit but it wasn’t big enough so I basically held the trigger down full blast and worked it around in clockwise circle till the hole was big enough. I didn’t have a bit big enough or a chick that would hole an inch wide bit.

I saw your in the comments your stepped drill bit wasn't big enough, but what size was it anyway? Nice mod I'm just doing the tow pin and shackle in the rear. I don't have grinders and what not to grind washers down. Thanks for the vid

brian24fly I’m not sure the exact size but it’s gotta be close to an inch, I’ll measure later today.

I am working on doing this project on my 2013 xv but I am having the exact opposite issue where my oem tow hook extends about 2-3 inches past the bumper so it looks really awkward. So I went online and bought two morr subaru oem tow hooks built for an outback but they are exactly the same as my xv tow hook. Has anyone else experienced this? If so how did you resolve?
@mikeodonnell54764 жыл бұрын
I think it’s because of the design of the bumpers on those years and where the hook mounts, only thing I could think of would be to grind down the end as long as there’s enough threads

Not supposed to even have the toe pin in while driving. Defeats safety features and modifies the crumple zone.
