Things you should not do in Japan!
If your luggage is big, reserve and use the luggage space! It is the same cost and allows everyone to sit comfortably 😌

I was in Japan ten years ago and the Shenkansen do have reserved and non-reserved sections. Since we had the JR unlimited ticket for two weeks we choose the reserved section as we didn't want to end up without a seat. It was a smooth ride. Unfortunately the unlimited ticket didn't apply to the more upscale Shenkansen.

Yep, this is a new rule after the tokyo Olympics. The priority goes to those who reserved those seats (which entitles you to use the oversized baggage section) Our entire party reserved the whole back row of 5 months in advance, cos we needed it for all 5 of our large luggages. Boarded it to find someone else's luggage in our slot. We called the conductor over and he kicked out the luggage so ours could go in, and went to find the owner to fine him 😆 yes you WILL get fined if you bring oversized luggage on board and don't have a reserved space for it. That's what people get for not doing their research in advance I guess lol

As a frequent user of the bullet trains in Japan I'll try to address some misunderstandings that have occurred in the comment section. First, there is an overhead luggage storage system. If your bag is a carry on size when flying then it should fit there. Some people just keep it at there feet because there is so much space in front of your seat. For example, you could keep your luggage there and not have your feet squished. Secondly, the storage at the back is for bigger luggage that you would normally check in on a flight. That needs to be reserved in advance but you sit right in front of that seat. Literally right in front so no one will steal it as you'll notice immediately. All of what I said can be verified on the different bullet train websites.
@prnzssLuna
@prnzssLuna Жыл бұрын
This. You have to reserve the space for luggage larger than 160cm (sum of all dimensions), which is HUGE. Lufthansa for example has that as checked(!) luggage limit! You can put quite large luggages in the overhead compartment with no issue. Even checked bags fit there snuggly

@@jasonlee148 yes! I came back from Japan roughly 2 weeks ago and we travelled with the shinkansen quite a lot. You can and should put luggage up to ~50cm width on the overhead space. @LilyoftheLake14

Well, sorry about being pedantic but, there are robbers in Japan. It's not like it never happens. HOWEVER, it's EXTREMELY RARE to get robbed due to cultural differences between Japan and the west lol. People stealing stuff is so rare in Japan that there's a stand that a literal DOG runs! Lol. You have to have exact change though and you point to what you want and I believe either you reach over to grab it or the dog hands it to you like when a dog gets a newspaper. You also get to pet them for free, which the dog absolutely loves the attention 😄 The dog is a Shiba Inu, if I remember correctly, and doesn't drool on your purchase when they have it in their mouth lol. Also, the stuff sold there is like newspapers, magazines, and packaged items. The dog isn't handing you a sandwich in their mouth or something lmao If that same stand was run anywhere in the west, all the product would be stolen by the afternoon and the dog might even be stolen, too lol. So sad that same level of honesty doesn't exist here... 🙁 Oh well...😮‍💨

@@marianagaoka9687 Yeah, I think most of us understood that when you said "no robbers" you meant that figuratively not literally. Also, in the context of SKS, you are locked in a long haul train for an extended period of time, the gates are separate from regular trains, and the ticketing cost to just BE on the train is much higher. So for a thief to execute this is highly risky and not cost effective.

And when I booked my JR pass for my visit in January and tried to reserve a space on the luggage compartment in green car, the station staff actually told me usually they will only do so for passengers with extra large luggages😂. One time I couldn’t reserve mine and in the end a male staff had to help me to put my luggage on the overhead compartment and a female staff helped me to take it down before arriving at my destination.😅I thought being in green car were not even 10% full most of time during my multiple rides had me wondered why the rules are so inflexible…

You don't need to go to the counter and speak to a staff member to book the large luggage space. Now that the JR Pass is an electronic ticket you can reserve seats yourself by using the ticket machine for Shinkansen seat reservations/tickets. It might take you time the first time you do it, but if you can use an ATM then you can use these machines. They guide you through the process step by step, with one of the steps asking if you have large luggage. Most people don't know that the standard "large" suitcases that most Westerners travel with are actually under the 160cm requirement. Only the "huge" luggage that you rarely see actually have to pay 1000yen surcharge for not reserving a space. As you found out, the conductor is normally happy to help with luggage, either lifting it onto the rack, or even storing it elsewhere if needed. As for rules, that's Japan. Their society is based on rules.

That should be a rule workdwide lol. My mom recently went shopping at a store's outdoor gardening area to buy flowers and she walked nearby an older woman who was wearing so much crappy perfume, that she literally couldn't breathe, started coughing, and had to quickly move away. This was OUTSIDE, too!!! I can't imagine what that'd be like inside a store! 😬 These type of people always choose the WORST perfumes or colognes, too. I have borderline asthma where I need an inhaler sometimes when exercising vigorously (like prolonged running) or if i get sick. So, Whenever I walk by someone like that, whenever I walk by someone like that, I also start coughing and have trouble breathing. I have no qualms about being impolite to inconsiderate people who are also impolite, so I always cough in the direction of these kind of people and then I'll lift my shirt over my nose or cover my nose with my hand if they too come close. It's a big hint for them but they must not understand (or ignore it) because I'm definitely not the only person who coughs when they walk by. Are they thinking, "Why is everyone here so sick? Weird..." or do they just not care about other people they're near being able to breathe and live? How do they not get they smell very bad and are wearing a dangerous amount of perfume/cologne that could stop someone's breathing, like people with severe asthma, cystic fibrosis, or people with severe allergies. After Covid showed how much people threw fits about having to wear a mask for 30 minutes at the grocery store, even though that was saving lives, im really not surprised about how many people care more about their own comfort over the lives of other people. I'm sure a majority of the people who pour an entire bottle of perfume on themselves in the morning are also the same people who protested having to do something as simple as wearing a mask while inside indoor public areas areas to save people's lives, including their life and the lives of their families. Sorry about the rant there lol. It's just disheartening and angering how awful and rude some people are. 🙁 That's something the world (especially my country) should look at Japan as the example to model themselves after: how to respect and care about your fellow citizen.

Also notice the sticker. Notice how it is not behind the last row of the green car. Notice how the last row of the green car is not your seat, your bags do not belong there. Also for the issue of keeping it with you at your seat, regardless of where your luggage ends up it should never obstruct other passengers or their ability to fully recline their seat.

A luggage under 160cm overall dimensions can be placed in the overhead storage. But anything over 250cm can't be taken onto the shinkansen at all.

This applies solely to large luggage. What you should not do is place your carry-on luggage at the back since others have reserved it for their bulky luggage. When I was there, this happened to my designated luggage area; one family didn't know how to read and just put all their stuff there first. Fortunately, the seat next to me is empty.

n.b. This short video doesn’t tell you that people who can keep their luggage’s are only people who reserved seat just right front of this tiny space. I think there should be luggage space for everyone. A bad system. (I say this sharply because I myself Japanese and I feel a little bad to those tourists who’s traveling with struggle). Every tourists with suitcases should complain to ShinKanSen.

In malaysia, for huge luggage i juz store it at the designated luggage space at the back of the coach. No one gonna steal your luggage. But in Europe dont ever try to do tht.

Spaces like that are even available on standard express trains in the network throughout Japan. The point is that the luggage next to you is a hazard and makes the ride more uncomfortable for everyone close to you.
