For as, it is something like Texas it isnt Nebraska and Alabama is totally different as NY. if you want to visit Eastern Europe go to Ukraina, Belorusia or Moldavia, for Baltic state Luthinia, Latvia or Estonia and Central Europe is Central Europe Czechia it is same like Germany or Poland. Totally no offence, it is an example.

@@wongalcz1611 when you get a 100 CZK fine for driving the wrong way in a one way street, that smells more like Eastern europe than Central europe to be honest. I don't think Germany/Austria/Switzerland do 4 euro fines, lol. CZ may be geographically central but that's where is ends. CZ is the same like DE? Are you saying CZ is socio-economically at the same level as the richest, most powerful nation in Europe?! I'd say it's time to buy those Ryanair tickets and start travelling!
@SlosII3 жыл бұрын
@@mortisCZ When an outsider refers to CZ as Eastern Europe, he's not talking about the geographic location, he is referring to you being east or west of the famous iron curtain. It's actually funny how Czechs try to point them to the map and say; 'look we're actually not east, we're central'. Who are they fooling? I'm not sure Austria and Switzerland agree on you being part of 'Central Europe'. When you travel from Prague to Vienna you are going west by going east, that's quite unique, lol. Ignoring reality/history by pointing out the geographic location on a map does not alter said reality/history. Look, I cannot blame the Czechs for having been invaded and ruled by communists, there is no way a small country like CZ can defend itself against an agressor like Russia but what I do blame them for is that 3 decades after the Velvet revolution the smell of communism and socialism is still hanging around on the streets, the vibe is definitely an eastern vibe in way too many places, I blame the Czechs for not getting rid of this stench! Or if I had just told closer acquaintances about something serious in my life like someone dying or me losing a job. If I am buying a coffee (not at Starbucks. Very good recommendations, indeed. Regarding trams, their drivers are not reckless but if you get in the way the driver has to choose between harming you and harming everybody on board. Even though he will definitely try to stop using maximum reasonable braking power, you'll be the one pulling the short end. Regarding use of Euros, large shopping chains like Billa accept them at reasonable exchange rate, you'll not be robbed. You can even get better rate than in an exchange office. But any returned change will be in czech crowns.

All languages have colloquial phrases that may say or ask one thing but mean something different. Part of learning new languages and cultures is learning how the locals use their words. If I go to Canada and say that I need to jump out of myself, they would have no idea what I'm saying, but it makes sense in the Czech Republic. As a rule, I don't try to attribute cultural attitudes based on colloquial phrases, as I don't believe one country exclusively owns universal superiority, correctness, kindness or sincerity.

Hi Jen, do you ever plan to do a QnA? I would love to know how different would the relocation to a foreign country be with small or bigger kids. Would you prefer to raise a family in Prague or would you move back to LA, if you ever decide to? What would you recommend to fellow Americans?
@DreamPrague3 жыл бұрын
Oooh, a Q&A would be fun! My parents always dreamt of moving abroad with all of us kids, but I think it's an intimidating idea. I would definitely recommend moving here with kids. It's incredibly safe, and I think challenging your kids to grow up in another culture is one of the best gifts you could give them.

If you ask for vegetarian menu in traditional Czech restaurant you will either be offered: Fried cheese (Eidam or Hermelín) w/ boiled potatoes/fries/american potatoes Fried cauliflower w/ boiled/mashed potatoes Fruit dumplings (if you are lucky) Or you if "koprova omačka" is on menu you can politely ask waiter whether you could get it with boiled egg.

huh, had no idea about the standing right on escalator thing, but im from Pilsen and we dont have metro here and you can buy your bus/tram ticket in the bus/tram with your credit card👍
@vaclav_fejt3 жыл бұрын
You can buy a PID ticket with your debit card as well. It's only available in metro and trams, though. Brno has an interesting system - you beep in and then you beep out and it only charges you for the time you've actually ridden (up to 15 minutes, I think, so if you forget to beep out, it's no big deal).

@@vaclav_fejt this is similar in Ostrava where you do the same and it caps at the price of a one day ticket, no matter how many additional rides you take.

Jen má v tomhle naprostou pravdu...když si na eskalátoru do/z metra stoupneš nalevo, tak s největší pravděpodobností nebude trvat dlouho, než za tebou někdo přijde a požádá tě, abys mu uvolnil cestu :D

A lot of it is true for Slovakia as well. :) But, OMG, #28 ( 8:33 ) is soooooo true! And most of the times here (in Slovakia) you'll need to notify *** BEFORE YOU ORDER *** that the bill will be paid separately. More than once the waiter told me that he could not split the bill after the food is ordered...
@TheStunningParallel Жыл бұрын
LOL. I must be pseudo Czech. If someone asks me "how are you?", I dump it all on them... And actually vice versa: if I ask someone how they are I'm often interested in some "elaborate" version. I mean, why would you ask if you're not really interested? ;) Either way, as a European myself, this video sort of "meta" tells me more about the U.S./Americans, since many customs and behavior is very similar all over Europe. One thing I did reflect upon, is when you order food at a restaurant but are discouraged from making changes. I'm assuming this doesn't pertain to being allergic to something and wanting them to omit it? As a chef myself, I see it as a duty to please the customers, unless they're just being over the top or too picky. Anyway, great video, thanks!

I visited Prague for the first time in January 2020 and actually I made only a mistake, which I asked a waiter if we were in Czechoslovakia or Czech Republic. She looked at me badly! A part of it Prague is my favourite city in Europe, after Rome. I visited Czech Republic 5 times since then and actually I came back from there few days ago. As she said there is not only Prague to visit, there are plenty of places to see outside Prague. A quick tip! Rent a car as when you visit other places, you will go through many villages. Do not expect anything fabolous from some of these villages, but what attracts is that they are different from what we are get use to see.
