Black Friday is amazing and terrible at the same time. I think I'm old enough to have gone through all the phases... When I was younger, I used to get excited and go to the stores at 5 AM. Then I got older and stuck my nose up at all the consumerism. Then I got older... and now I love it... because I go in with a plan.
Most of my big purchases are made during this season because everything is on sale... the garbage is on sale... but so are the good items. However, you HAVE to have a plan! Check out the video to see how I do it... and don't fall for the #blackfriday hype.

I work in the IT industry in south Africa, and I work with suppliers for tech items and I see the prices steadily climb throughout the year and then on black Friday they come back down to normal pricing :')

I feel like it's a good idea to check the price history. Sometimes stuff actually is priced up in October and then it's on "sale" because they just increased the prices before.

A lot of my friends and family are tight on money this year that usually have money or maybe they just didn't talk about their financial situation in the past. I wonder how this year's black Friday numbers will compare to previous year's due to everyone dealing with increasing cost of living across the board. I'm just going to buy a refrigerator that I was going to get anyways.

Heard this video at work today. I don't mean to sound dramatic, but the way consumerism has creeped into most facets of our life today; I believe this video was presented in the ideal way for what American capitalism should be. Not pushy, emphasized moderation and fiscal responsibility, and didn't dramatize the opportunity of savings. I wouldn't mind this being the cornerstone of sales culture.

My old tv broke which would be cool because now I get a new one, but all the new tvs are more geared towards spying & marketing me than my viewing pleasure. How can I avoid my TV watching me and trying to sell me? This isn't a jokey reference to 1984 I legit just want a new TV.

I haven't bought anything on Black Friday for years because I've realized most of it they just mark up the prices a few months before and then "dock them down" for a "sale" when it's around the holidays. Also, I seem to remember Black Friday used to actually have deals, but recently it's been like a whole 20% off maximum in my area; games, TV, tech, etc. I guess it depends where you go too. It's all kind of a huge joke anymore. Like they're always trying to rush people to buy stuff for the holidays 3 months in advance too.

Exactly this. They just price fix and then act like it's some super deal. Keep track of average prices and you know they're just wasting your time.

@@Fallen608 I don't know if that has always been what they've done or if it's a more recent think after COVID, but it's such a joke. I do remember like maybe 10 years ago, some things having an actual deal like 40% off or more even but now I hardly see even 20% off.

Tech wise, I've been pretty good. I already built myself and my wife a new PC this year. The only catch is that she had a full upgrade because she had an all in one. Her Monitor is better than mine. Mine is still fine at 1080p, but I could get one with a higher res and refresh rate and with Gsync for the 3060 TI I now have. I probably would have stayed happy with mine (I did mine first and just the tower), but I do feel jealous from time to time🙃. I would be more likely buy a 3d printer first. I have a certain one in mind, so I think just buying it during a regular sale is less stressful. And Games always go without saying though I am not hooked on anything these days.

as a european I always found black friday to be weird and crazy, but over the recent years people got crazy over it too, now there will be lines infront of stores so people can buy tvs or whatever...10 years ago that would have been unthinkable, but consumerism got here too

Black Friday is completely fake in Denmark. All our prices have been going up over the last 2-3months, only for retailers to “discount” the prices on the day itself, and not always by the full amount that they added. In Denmark, October to January is the worst time to buy any luxury item. The prices are usually cheapest between February and April.

Some business put their prices up a week before, but most put them up slowly, over months because they got some media backlash and attention over this a few years ago, so they got much sneakier! Anything you do to shed light on these kinds of practices is a good thing! It certainly seems to be a global business practice though. But one thing I notice is the whole American "bait & switch" upsell is not done here, so that's a positive!

I think it's important to ask yourself at a much earlier stage whether you really need new things or whether it might be possible to buy something second hand and therefore a little more sustainable... Now take you as an example: You are looking for a new power supply and a new notebook. Why and for what? Don't you already have a PC?

Yeah, I haven't dug too far down that hole, but that's what I've heard as well. The rating doesn't mean much, but the build quality is what really counts. I've been jaded with reviews professional or otherwise, but checking multiple reviews helps. Or seeing if there are any major reports of consistent major defects.

Stopped eating at food trucks and restaurants (mostly). Got an elliptical and put a TV in front of it. I run 4-5x a week for 30-45 min. 70-100 pushups every other day. Otherwise, not much has changed.

No. If you need something, it's better to get it 50% off than to reject consumerism then buy the item in January for twice the price. Just plan like I do

@@teksyndicate save yourself a ton of headaches and just go refurb - the value king by a wide wide margin - small businesses in particular should take this approach, the smb mkt dwarfs the consumer mkt so it applies to a bigger demographic - black friday just is not worth the stress or hassle - be smart not stressed
