Even though he has a cold and stoic exterior, his love is still visible through small mannerisms, and that's what makes him so attractive, I think.

I loved Colin Firth so much as Mr. D that I resisted watching this film for a long time. How stupid was I? Once I finally watched this version, I never gave Colin Firth another thought. MM is so perfect in this role. His aching vulnerability is always present. Then there is his voice. OMG! He is truly perfection in every possible way. Whoever cast him in this role deserves so much credit.

I don’t think it was love at first sight. Her personality grew on him as he discovered who she was. Initially her looks weren’t tolerable enough for him. But then her conversation made him curious. Then his curiosity turned into a crush. Then that liking grew into love. Each time they met or interacted, these phases grew. and she didn’t pander to him like everyone else had. She spoke her mind, while still being respectful in public settings (some people think it’s great to have attitude for the sake of attitude itself. But that is not the warranted fiestyness that Elizabeth had here- they lack the respectfulness and proper deference she shows in public settings toward him). He found someone genuine, beyond his exterior of wealth and position. She doesn’t flatter him, but was honest. A wise man will value that. The challenge and good she brings out of him. A cowardly, egotistical man couldn’t handle that. But Mr Darcy is a person of humility and maturity to understand he too can be wrong sometimes and has room to grow. And Elizabeth had her pride to work on, she was wrong too. I think they sensed that they would torture each other in the right way to grow. And of course there was attraction and a kindness that they discovered was there all along, which took them time to discover in one another; so great were their assumptions about each other. It took time, and her trying to get a dance with him initially. Her pride at getting turned down early on was like a mountain between them. So he had to be the one to pursue and repair. And he sure did. So don’t shut him out if it’s not love at first sight- true love rarely is.
