Puss in Boots the Last Wish was one of my animated films of all time and what's stayed with me since the first viewing was how it handled the concept of death, a concept that has been on my mind more and more in my adult life.

Death in the Shrekverse is the closest we've gotten to a traditional depiction of the Fair Folk.

We should still fear Death enough to respect it. That was what Puss in Boots learned from this whole ordeal because that solved the Wolf Reaper's problem with Puss in Boots taking life for granted, foolishly wasting eight of his nine cat lives, and the Wolf Reaper thinking that since Puss is an egotistical hero who laughs in the face of death, then he would not care if his last life was cut short - but now he does care. After the Wolf Reaper scared Puss away from him once before, Puss is a more mature cat when the Wolf Reaper comes back to fight him in the climax. Puss in Boots learned to value his life and other cats close to him in his life, and that is what convinces the Wolf Reaper to allow Puss in Boots to live out the rest of his ninth life when he realizes that Puss in Boots is brave enough to respect the end of death, and humble enough to not laugh in the face of death.
