I was at my most creative, home recording-wise, using a simple Portastudio. The advent of DAWs and the ability to undo and edit stuff endlessly meant I tend to spend more time trying to make things "perfect" than actually getting on with the real job - actually playing.

The thought of recording horrifies me. I play through an amp and don't even know where to begin if I wanted to get my sounds into a computer. I have huge respect for all those who create the music we love. Happy New Year, everyone! 🎉

As an engineer for over 50 years I've always felt that mixing is as much tactile as aural. Before console automation I'd run through a mix a zillion times, rewinding that 24-track each time, rehearsing all the fader moves and rolling that chair back and forth down the console until that one moment when it all seems to come together. Yes I can cut tape and I'm damn good at it. I appreciate the tech in DAWs and do use it but it's true that capturing those moments in the studio when the live performance beats anything that can be done in post is just magic.

Yeah we used to watch in the audience when Sideshow Bob with red dreds would get excited on the drums and speed up 🤣

7:55 I like early Beatles the best still. That red 1962-1966 compilation is some of the finest pop music ever recorded.

I you made up some Casino Guitars t-shirts with the slogan "I destroyed it with a sledge hammer for fun" I'd definitely buy one.

Led Zeppelin is like that, too. Jimmy Page drove engineers crazy because he moved mics back from amps to get more of a room sound. John Bonham is on practically every track, lol. But Page showed that the most important thing is to capture a great live rock and roll sound , and an inspiring performance on the basic, main tracks. Isolating every little thing from the rhythm guitar down to each little cymbal too often results in sterile sounding, spiritless recordings. That’s why so many young bands back in the day would put out studio albums that were kind of blah, when they kicked total butt as a live band. As great as The Beatles were, we’ll never know how much they kicked butt when they were loose, loud and live in the old British and German clubs.

Sean, I feel you on the Yamaha cassette recorders! I have a Yamaha MT8X 8-track cassette. The way you can drive into the tape is incredible. If people want an early/mid-90’s Guided By Voices or Sebadoh type sound, then go with an old little Tascam 4 track. But if you don’t want it over-the-top lofi, the MT8X is a great choice.

I recorded a reggae tune, on a 4 track tape, my Dads like get my mate a producer to redo it, it sounded great like thru pro tools, but at the end the original had a complete different vibe that couldnt be beat

I’m a drummer. I have Garnet and Traynor amps. I buy Eminence speakers. Real hand wired amps. They are still pretty affordable. Also Used Godin solid bodies. Add Dimarzio pickups if needed. My jam room is not bad.

the only computer stuff I do is I program drum tracks on my computer, play those to a metronome on the tascam, and then stack my tracks from there, so I guess when I said I record "live" I misspoke but the takes are complete takes (no edits/splices except on ONE song and you can tell and it needs to be re-done) and what is on the recording is what it sounded like when I tracked it.

For me writing and recording songs is the thing I love. I play everything myself. Guitar tone means a lot less than song structure to me. I put down a thumbnail of guitar or piano with an idea of melody, then I put on drums and bass and then forget the thumbnail and record the guitars and other stuff again with the effects live. I don’t use pro tools or dramatic editing beyond eq, reverb, and a bit of compression on the vocals and bass. The next idea I have is recording a pop song that moves from 4/4, 3/4, 5/4 and 7/8 time signatures.

"Fix it in post" is one of the worst phrases to hit music or movies. Like they said in Salute Your Shorts, "Get it right or pay the price!"
@scottkidwell36013 күн бұрын
I use "We'll fix it in post" daily in construction as a snide comment towards the 'get it done' mindset of management... kind of like "I'm from the hall, I'm here to help" 😂

11:20 I had floor tickets for Blink 182 in Raleigh, they were running a silent stage, it was my first ever concert like that, I didn't enjoy it. You could barely tell what song they were playing and where they were at in the song. Ironically the opening band (Pierce The Veil, I'm not even a fan) sounded 10x better than Blink.
