Get your instrument rating. Even if you don't plan on filing/flying IFR the skills involved are extremely valuable and will make you a better VFR pilot. You can fly in what I call "dry IMC" which is smoke, haze, and inversions without a clearance and without a flight plan in most class G airspace. If you upgrade your avionics and air filtration systems, you can depart IFR through smoke without a clearance from a Class E airport and either pick up your clearance when you reach center controllers or continue VFR once you've left the smoke. It adds an extra layer of proficiency and safety, and also allows you to continue pushing your airplane to the edge of its performance. Great video. Keep making these.

Amen! IFR cert is such a life-saver, when encountering unanticipated visual obstructions - aka: special VFR.

This was a really entertaining series. It highlights some of the other aspects of backcountry flying, which include maintenance issues, smoke, and finding airports when you are forced to plan B or even C. Thank you!

Awesome video, great editing and what an adventure. This video is probably the best of this series. You were talking about Johnson Creek being not that busy. Caldwell airport, where I fly out of and which I believe is the second busiest airport in Idaho (due to the helicopter training school) has NOT been very busy this year either. It's just a weird year. But it allows me training on my new fixed wing with less air traffic to worry about. Stay safe and Blue skies. Rizwan.

Jonas, Loved the video!! I live in western Oregon near the Holiday Farm Fire and had to travel daily hauling fuel down past the Archie Creek Fire.. That being said, the smoke was the worst I have seen around here, but I would have to imagine a good portion of the smoke you had in Idaho was courtesy of us here in Oregon.. Glad you were safe in your adventures with Trent and Ty!! When are you going to start getting your new plane built??

Was working with this playing in the background and was thinking to myself 'that sounds just like a BN-2B Islander...' I grew up with those things taking us in and out of what was at that time the world's shortest commercial airfield at Out Skerries in the Shetland Islands, Scotland. Great to see one stateside.

Good stuff Jonas, that was a really good short film. + love the sub artesian hot spring. Get a sample of the H2O next time take it to a pool chemical shop for Spintouch analysis. Depending on the results: "might be good for skin or ingestion". + I don't think it's best oractice to wear " flip flops" on that terrain. Say G, day to Trent, fly safe and have fun.🇦🇺🍩

You guys seem to be truly blessed with opportunities, but Russia does allow and provide some of this backcountry flying too. Take that from someone who had a 7000+km trip in a rotax twoseater here this year. We had our part of mountains, camp sites, wild sceneries, improvised landings and complicated visibility too. Anyways, thanks for inspiring videos from across the pond. Fly safe.
