I never really saw that the SA-X was saving Samus as much as it saw an opportunity to take down it's natural predator. It was established that metroids were designed to prey on the X parasites by the Chozo. I just recently finished Metroid Fusion for the first time. I really cannot agree with the haters about it. Yes it's linear, but the linear focus works well with the theme of the story, The Fusion Suit is the best explanation for Samus losing all the powers she gained in the previous game. The SA-X and the X Parasites were a genuinely bigger threat than Mother Brain and the Space Pirates. There was tons more action and fast paced boss battles. It was genuinely a tougher game than Super Metroid. Being able to climb certain walls, hang from certain ceilings and grip ledges felt like very welcome traversal abilities. I also think the Fusion Suit is more visually interesting than any of Samus' previous power suit iterations. For the first time in the series, Samus truly does function like the series' namesake. By the end of the game she's a fierce hunter who wiped out one of the greatest threats to the universe, and yet in spite of her heroic efforts, she's deemed a fugitive by the Galactic Federation. How cool would it be to get a sequel to Metroid Fusion, a proper Metroid 5, where we see Samus in the Fusion suit acquire the grapple beam and other new power ups to the series while having to fight Bounty Hunters and Galactic Federation troopers out to eliminate her for her crimes.

4:39 There was some context. The Metroids were the natural enemies of the X, being the only being capable of safely absorbing them. Before this point it was already established that the X would ignore Samus, perceiving the Metroids to be a more substantial enemy, as seen in the restricted lab where the SA-X wildly open-fires at basically everything. It's logical to assume that the same SA-X that samus defeated would be tracking samus, as it was explained that they were tailing her by adam, and then in the process discovers the omega and freaks out like before. Additionally, the creatures were already established to have some knowledge of spaceship movement, as they managed to escape Planet Zebes of their own devices, provided you go out of your way to shoot a wall for them during the escape. If you do this, you can see an additional dot leaving Zebes before it explodes in the ending. Going out of their way to tell you that the creatures moved the ship was still unnecessary, but lore consistent. You're hypothetical about Adam was an intriguing one, although I do like the Other M and Fusion interpretation where they both reveal that he had a level head to begin with, and were alright at reading situations. Other M did make him kinda stupid though. Your idea would make for some interesting back and forth between him and Samus if they were smart enough to capitalize on it, however. Still fun to think about. I enjoyed the video, and found a grand majority of it to be fair and fun.

Though Metroid has always been a gameplay first franchise. So they wanted to make a more linear Metroid game and so made the story fit that. More linear games are a better fit for a handheld as you have a much clearer sense of progression. With a more open ended game it can be hard to remember where exactly you were if you open it up again. With many reviews of handheld games it's important to remember how a game was made to be played. If you play a handheld game on a big screen with an emulator during a marathon 20 hour session it indeed will be inferior to a console game pretty much every time. That's because the console game was meant to be played like that while the handheld game was not. You need to play it on a handheld system with a small screen for about 1-2 hour sessions because that's what it was designed for.

That is a secret. It's completely optional and there are ways around it. BTW, that's not bad design (For those that say it is).
@misanthropiclusion7 жыл бұрын
it's not really poor design, the game's intended path is for you to go through the wrecked ship to Meridia after defeating Phantoon, you just have to go through the right side of the ship on the path open once you get the gravity suit, basically just explore all the ship instead of leaving after killing the boss, then the path is almost linear to that area, not only that but in the way there is a similar glass corridor that is broken, then once you find the corridor again you have to assume it's possible because the game showed you a glass corridor that was broken, you were not intended by the game to go to meridia through the complete glass corridor, but it is possible opening 2 possible ways to access the area for the first time. The only design issue there is the game not showing something similar around that too so if you choose the non intended path you have to be lucky or make a random guess more than get it ouf of intuition with a visual example.
@oscarmccormack16117 жыл бұрын
misanthropiclusion That's not the only case of something like that though. Personally I had no idea there was a metroid fan base that thought this game was lack luster. In my opinion I have a hard time selecting a favorite between super and fusion. Fusion may have a computer that guides you to make it "linear" but the game does not direct how to accomplish each guided mission. Also around halfway through the computer begins telling you that there are routes you have to find on your own without the map and they bosses start to become close to as hard as Ridley from super. The upgrades are still hidden through this method and made inaccessible through hidden access keys and backtracking once upgrades are available, and half of samus's energy tanks are acquired without following the story making you actually have to explore yourself . The story is far from bland as it ties in the very reason the metroid were being used by the chozo as a weapon against the x and brings light on the series as a whole that made you believe the metroid were the ultimate enemy but irionically they were a failsafe for the x parasite. Although the game holds hand near the first half, by the end half it holds the same caliber of exploration as super along with controls that optimized how to control Samus. This game is every bit as good and challenging as it's Super Nintendo counterpart in my opinion

@@gaming1zanagi-1999 well I like having a separate run button to dash faster. But I will agree that they could have done better when deciding which functions held priority to have their own buttons. Nice Vid. Too bad that you didnt talk about the little secrets in Fusion. Here are 2 examples. 1st (The most helpful one): The Charge-Beam has double the height of the normal Beam and counts as 2 separate shots (should only, for example, the bottom of the shot hit, the upper part will continue to fly in the direction you shot). It also has a little Flare once you shoot a charged shot. That Flare combined with the charged shot is enough to 2-shot Serris, one of the Bosses in Fusion. 2nd: The secret Message. There is 1 point in the game where you can sequence break Fusion, but it requires a lot of skill with the shinespark (or you can be cheap and shoot a missile in a pretty much pixel-perfect spot to skip it all). Because of it's linearity, Fusion is very Fun to speedrun, as there are less places where you can screw up, unlike in Super, where you can sequence break it so much that there are now way too many routes (at least in my opinion). But all in all you talked about the most things from Fusion. Have a good day.

Some people would argue that, because of its linearity, Fusion is a worse speedrun than Super. Also, when you say there are less places to screw up... I would disagree. Fusion, for the most part, is a longer run to execute well by about a 25min difference between both the any% and 100% world records. Where Fusion has less difficulty is with its physics, not with its linearity. Where super's physics engine is in depth and difficult to understand, Fusion's is relatively basic and easy to understand.

One thing about Fusion's linearity that I really like is how stark of a contrast it is to every other Metroid game's feeling. Personally, I believe that it's done specifically to hammer home how much of a "controlled environment" the station is, and when the big reveal about the Federation hits, suddenly that all makes sense. The game's structure is limited specifically because of how the Federation was manipulating how much Samus could see and interact with on the station, and how powerful she was meant to become during the mission. Once Samus breaks free of that, you suddenly realize how connected the whole station really is and how easily you could have moved from sector to sector hunting the X if the Federation had, I dunno, beamed you the Screw Attack and all your upgrades a lot earlier? I do think they could have dropped that reveal earlier in the game and allowed you to roam a bit more, but all-in-all I think it was a thematic choice that really nailed what they were going for.

@storms133 жыл бұрын
Adam is already dead, the computer is not him, it’s his knowledge/brain uploaded to an AI, and Sami’s breaks the AI on the end of the game. It makes sense how the computer acts early game, so I don’t see a problem with it. Also the SA-X is enemies with the Metroids so it makes sense why it attacks the Omega Metroid at the end. It’s not protecting Sami’s, but instead just being the killing machine it’s always been attacking the greater threat in that situation.

I liked the video for the most part but I feel as though that you got it wrong when analyzing the game. Fusion doesn't need to be compared to Super Metroid in order to stand on its own you know. I always saw Fusion as something that was so original for a Metroid game that it could have became its own sub-series like Prime did. Officially speaking, yes it is a sequel to Super Metroid, but I really have a hard time understanding why it should follow that game's legacy so closely when every Metroid game in the series has tried to differentiate itself from its prequels (including Super Metroid...). Instead of focusing on Metroid Fusion's success as a sequel to Super Metroid, look at the game as another foray into Metroid's expansion. I am sure you will see the game for what it is instead of all the bullshit "Super Metroid is the bread and butter of the series" sequel that you wanted it to be. There will only be one Super Metroid, one Metroid Prime, one Prime 2, one Prime 3 (thank god), and certainly one under-appreciated Fusion (well according to you its underrated but Fusion has a hella amount of fans here in the comments section).
@justinalicea15905 жыл бұрын
As The Geek Critique said, the game is meant to be a corruption of a masterpiece. The team did not wish to make Super Metroid 2, even if they could have. They wanted Fusion to be able to stand on its own feet.
@syweb22 жыл бұрын
Being a direct sequel to Super, comparison is inevitable, especially with not only how highly-regarded both Super and Prime are, but the fact that all but two of its power-ups are taken directly from Super, leading to _very_ similar-feeling gameplay. What Fusion proves is that it doesn't _have_ to follow the same exact formula Super does to be a successful member of the franchise.

I quite frankly remember playing this on my ds when I had got the game. And its what made me start to love the metroid franchise in a whole. The game had a brilliant, And creepy soundtrack. The gameplay was amazing. And the story was not forgettable. In a final verdic, Do i say you could give it a shot? yes. give it a chance. The SA-X is probably the single best thing about Fusion... in concept at least. The SA-X is criminally underused since you encounter it 4 times before the final battle, and the only encounter that you can't skip or avoid is the last one where you have enough tools to get away intact without too much issue. What the SA-X is, the fact that there are 10 of these things, but you almost never find it. At some point it's practically a non-issue, you're just worried about making sure the station doesn't explode. I'd liked if Fusion had done more with the SA-X looking back (the fact that it's AI is easily abused is another point), but the same could be said with several things as the video pointed out. I'd say the reason behind Fusion's power up selection is probably the same as Prime 1 and Samus Returns, a return to form after a long wait. Samus Returns has a better excuse since it's a remake. A game past Fusion in the timeline could do cool stuff, like perhaps Samus develops Metroid powers due to a long term side effect of the Metroid Vaccine (I think Sakamoto said in a Q&A that Samus isn't part Metroid anymore after absorbing the SA-X based on how Sakamoto's answer is worded). Food for thought I guess.

I know, but I'm going off of "Word of God" that transcends what's in the games. Sakamoto said this 15 years ago, so we'll only know if it's true whenever a game after Fusion is released.

Novuscourvous Why? The SaX is so much better. Prime just did the mainstream things that every hero has to have a dark counterpart... Kind of found that hole thing stupid... But atleast the setup was kind of good. By the way I feel the same way about the Phazon Suit... It's just dumb and only there for looking badass or something. And why the colors of the suit black and red if it's meant to represent Phazon? They just wanted to make it look evil I guess... The PEG suit in Prime 3 is much better it stars of looking a bit more like the federation Armor but it's color become darker and darker and by the end the suits only 1 color, a dark blue, which looks "evil" but the design makes sense and it doesn't need to use colors that are connected to the word evil to show that it's corrupted by phazon...

Kevin Thompson I recommend Metroid Prime 3, it's a great beginner's guide to the Metroid universe. Of course, motion controls are hideous on the Wii, blah blah blah, but these are very accurate! :) The game has Hypermode, which is basically a noob boost (:D) and it catches up on Prime 1 and 2's story so you don't feel so inexperienced
@williamrodriguez89577 жыл бұрын
I would say Fusion is a bit easier, and Zero Mission is incredibly easy. The thing both games did better than super was the controls and combat, both being far more fluent and fast, with fusion standing out among the two for having the better weapons and a very viable charge beam. If Super Metroid had Zero Mission's control and Fusion's combat, I would probably consider it to be far better than it already is. Fransu is also right about Prime 3, although 1 is good for noobs too, 2 being the hardest because of the entirety of the dark world.
@FransuToffi7 жыл бұрын
William Rodriguez true. I also think linearity accounts to easier gameplay (for example Fusion, Prime 3, AM2R etc.) since you have less chances to screw up (Fusion has the SA-X though) :D

I'm honestly confused in the amount of "Super Metroid is overrated" comments. Here's a TRUE STORY: My first Metroid was Fusion when I was a kid. I loved the hell out of it. For over a decade that was the only Metroid game I've played. So I guess I couldn't say I was a fan of the series... yet. Then in 2015, I purchased Super Metroid and Metroid Prime Trilogy on the Wii U eshop. Based off recommendations from the internet, I came to the conclusion that Super Metroid and Metroid Prime are not only the two best Metroid games, but also one of the greatest games of all time. So I had to try them! I thought they were great, but I still preferred Fusion (no doubt since it was my childhood favorite). But literally just a few months ago, a KZbin video re-sparked my interest in Super Metroid, and so I played it for the third time. I kid you not, but Super Metroid has become my favorite game of all time! It beats Super Mario 64 and Smash Melee for me. It's truly a great game. It took me three playthroughs and some KZbin videos to truly understand its greatness. .................................... Just keep in mind that Super Metroid is the only Metroid game where skill can change gameplay. This is another reason it's an amazing game. The better you get at it, you'll discover that you can manipulate the game in many ways than before. Plus, getting better at the game makes YOU feel like a badass. Samus becomes as badass as you can make her, just by your playstyle. Super Metroid probably has the most versatile, agile movement in gaming. Samus is a total beast in that game. I highly respect the game developers for including awesome abilities like the Bomb Jump, Shinespark, Damage Boost, Moon Walk, and Single Wall-Jump. People think that Fusion and Zero Mission had "tighter controls," and while it may seem so at first sight, just some practice in Super Metroid is all one needs to know that it's more superior. Don't believe me? Just watch a speedrun of that game. It's no coincidence that's Super Metroid is known as "a speedrunner's dream game," and no coincidence that it's the fourth most active game in the speedrunning community. The fact that Super Metroid influenced games like Skyrim, Minecraft, and Shadow Complex just proves how important Super Metroid is to the gaming community.

Comments like these are exactly why people think Super is overrated
@virunusgaming84556 жыл бұрын
Late comment, but I want to say that I personally think Super should be regarded as a standout -for it's time-. I think by today's standards it can be said to have solid design, but one thing alone makes it not exciting to play through: Difficulty. Everything in a standard playthrough of Super Metroid is a cakewalk if you're at all familiar with the genre. Bosses don't really require any real strategy, all proper strategy does is make it die slightly faster. I have fond memories of the game from my childhood, but today I can't be bothered to finish it because it's so easy that I don't feel engaged when playing it. You can create -artificial- difficulty by doing things like speedruns and sequence breaking, but that's an entirely different kind of difficulty. The combat, the stuff that actually kills you, never changes. It's probably still worth playing once if you've never played it just to see what it was -- the atmosphere might be enough to carry you through a first-time playthrough.

The final SA-X moment has plenty of logical reasoning! I can at least imagine 2 possibilities: - It'd gone there to escape the B.S.L station on Samus ship and upon seeing it was gone, changed priorities to kill the Omega Metroid, considering it a worse threat than Samus. - It figured giving Samus the ability to kill that Metroid with seemingly no backlashes to itself other than the loss of one foot soldier was a good deal.

Maybe even some new armor types other than the Varia and Gravity suit. And the amount of wepons she could use.. Maybe even a drain energy beam.. The SA-X didn't save you, remember that the X want to destroy all Metroid, and the final fight of fusion is against an Omega Metroid, hinted by Adam to be the strongest Metroid type, so the SA-X actually tried using you to defeat it, not knowing that it's lifeform will be under Samus' complete control after being absorbed. Perhaps it thought it can control samus to kill the Omega Metroid knowing that Samus has Ice missiles and diffuser missles making the SA-X's job easier

One example I have is while I was using the dash boots, shinesparking all over the place, I noticed a place where you needed either the spider ball or the space jump(I went in with as little spoilers as possible, and I'd played 2, Super, and Prime). I fought the SA-X before the end, and couldn't beat it. I then remembered "Oh right, there's an energy tank right over here in this sector, why don't I grab that before heading to fight it?" But the game had long since already cut me off from that sector. I was stuck, not being able to grab any more upgrades or anything else to give myself another chance against the boss.

i LOVE metroid fusion! i actually liked the story! i genuinely got shocked when i realised that the computer was adam [even though i had and still have 0 knowledge of other m], the game does a good job of filling you in JUST enough for you to get what happened before, without spoiling it too much, and metroid fusion is easy, yet difficult, it feels rewarding when you finally beat the game! also, metroid fusion is the direct sequel to other m, not super metroid. i like fusion a LOT more then prime!. also, super metroid gave you the story in a way that makes you wonder what happened before and what happens after, subtilty yet directly, with flashbacks and a storytelling narrative at the beginning, but helping you along and giving you more hints as the game goes on, the same approach was taken with zero mission, both games i love just as much as fusion. and all three games have awesome storylines, character development, and overall are AWESOME games.

The ending may look identical to the SM ending, but the SA-X was never there to save Samus like the baby metroid was. The SA-X was an X, and the only predator to the X was the Metroid. The way I interpreted the ending to Fusion was that the X would always lose as long as one metroid existed. The Omega at the end would have become a queen, as the GF learned how to get metroids to metamorphose like they do on SR388. So the X were desperate to kill it. Either way, it was all in vein because Samus had already set the BSL to collide eith SR388. Ultimately, the destruction of the planet wiped out the entirety of the X and the metroid species together. Of course with the exception of Samus herself, as she was now infused with both Chozo and Metroid DNA.

Good video, i agree with most of your observations but, one thing i think you missed emphasizing was the story. It was great because of the twists and turns, and surprises but, it also left the Metroid universe on a bit of a cliffhanger. At the end of Metroid Fusion, Samus defies the Galactic Federation, her long time employers and to some degree, her family. Metroid Fusion was the last canonically in the Metroid timeline and by all rights Samus should be on the run from the Galactic Federation, who would want to atleast question her in regards to the destruction of the B.S.L. station, if not outright arrest her, and get her to pay for the destruction of the ship they gave her. Not to mention the other things that could be drawn upon in that setting. Why have we not seen this game yet?! That game could be the breath of fresh air that the franchise desperately needs. Why, instead, were we forced to endure the horrible storytelling, voice acting, and misrepresentation of a beloved character, that was in Metroid Other M, and the cheesy graphics of Metroid Federation Force?
@Rokabur4 жыл бұрын
I'd like to see where Metroid after Fusion goes. When she was young, Samus was infused with Chozo DNA (which I think explains why she can interact with the statues). And in Fusion, Samus was injected with Metroid DNA as well. If the Metroids and X truly are gone, Samus is basically the sole source of Metroid DNA left, which I bet both the Space Pirates and the government would both hunt her down for. What about either group finding out about her Chozo DNA that allows her to interact with Chozo technology?

Metroid fusion is absolutely my all time favorite metroid game. There's so much to love about it, the atmosphere, the character designs, the scary SA-X (which scared me shitless when I was little) and so much more! The one thing I think that makes Fusion so good is how eerie it is. You're in a space station that has been overrun by parasites, you don't know when you could be attacked. Take the SA-X, it pops out of nowhere sometimes and you have nothing to fight it with. Your only choice is to hide or run. The security robot that comes back after you think you've killed it keeps that uneasy and not safe feeling going throughout the game. And then when you see nightmare flying around in the backround you have no idea when you could be attacked. I could keep going, but I think everyone gets my point.

Fusion was my first Metroid game and is still to this day my absolute favorite, even after having played almost every Metroid game since. It's also not as "linear" as people claim it to be. Yes, you are given a clear and strict order to entering the sectors, but you can double back at almost any time and revisit any previous area to pick up things you missed. If I had only one complaint about Fusion, it would be the fact that you can't skip the opening cinematic. For first-time players, that's fine, but I've seen it literally dozens of times and it's always mildly frustrating having to sit through that whenever I start a new game. People hail Super Metroid as the best of all time, but I personally think that Zero Mission and Fusion are both far better games (also, Metroid Prime 1 is my second favorite game in the series). I never had a SNES growing up and only recently got to play Super Metroid on the 3DS virtual console. For my first experience of the game, it was... rough. I can definitely see why everyone loves it so much and says it's the best Metroid game, but for me personally, there was too little guidance and so many times I just had absolutely no idea where I was supposed to go or what I was supposed to do. Too many vital things you actually needed and vital ways to go were hidden behind arbitrarily hidden passages and breakable blocks you had to pore over every nook and cranny to attempt to find. If Super Metroid was a 2/10 on the guidance scale, then Zero Mission was a 3/10, and didn't hide everything vital behind breakable walls and did the open-world better. I think Zero Mission took what Super Metroid attempted and found the sweet spot between suggested guidance and exploration. Again, that's just my opinion, and as I said, I can still totally see why everyone comes back to it. I just personally think a remake would help me to appreciate it more and give me a better experience.

Proc of the Dawn to skip the opening cinematic: after watching the cinematic, wait until you gain control of Samus, then reset the game. After doing this, that file should read "0:00 MAIN DECK." After doing this, copy it to the other files and make sure that you always have a 0:00 file. If you do that you will never need to watch it again.

I guess these kind of opinions are the reasons that video games are being made with so much hand-holding these days.

as a middle schooler, fusion was an unforgettable experience. It was my first metroid game. I will admit my opinion of the game is largely based on nostalgia but those feelings the game gave me stick with me even today. Lots of respect for this title

Late to the party, but in Fusion it is revealed that Adam Malkovich is already dead by the AI Adam. The player learns this about 7 to 8 years later during the Events from OTHER M. It was always clear that Adam was dead, but it also left a sort of dread hanging. This week, the Front Mission Remake came out and players who know the story of FM also know where I am an going with this. FM has the ---- --- --- SPOILER --- --- --- usage of ACTUAL COMBAT PILOT BRAINS transformed into CPUs to assist the pilot of the Wanzer in their tactical decisions and analysis. THIS concept is very old in the japanese SciFi Franchise. So it is easy to imagine that the G-FED made AI Duplicates of their greatest minds and used them as an AI Support System.

Fusion is a masterpiece and was my first Metroid in the series. I remember getting a gameboy advance sp back in 2002 just to play it. Just watching this is making me want to find my gameboy and play it again.

Super Metroid at this point is overrated. Sure, it was groundbreaking when it came out. But it's almost 30 years old at this point. Zero Mission, Fusion and of course AM2R are much better games, they handle so well in comparison with Super. Super is sluggish and janky. I've been binge playing all 2d Metroid Games before starting Dread. And I had the least fun with Super

The SA-X Helping Samus Against the Omega Metroid *does* make sense when you consider that the X parasites are intelligent and aware that Metroids are their only real predator. That specific SA-X might have acted under the assumption that The Metroid was a bigger threat to the X species than Samus was.

I honestly really like how Fusion handles it’s transition from Console to Handheld game. It’s obvious that the devs had some concerns about releasing a game in the exact style of super Metroid on a handheld, and I think that Fusion has a really distinct theme of “artificiality” as a result. Like, the game itself acknowledges that this isn’t the “authentic” Metroid experience fans have come to expect. None of the enemies are the real Species they resemble, they’re X parasites. All of the locations are made to be deliberately artificial. You don’t explore SR388 or Miridia, you go through a simulated ecosystem and swim in a gigantic aquarium. You don’t explore the world freely, you’re guided around by an artificial commanding officer. It really feels like the developers actually did something with the game’s meta context. They recognized that it wasn’t the natural evolution of the Metroid series and integrated it into the game’s design and aesthetic.

The Omega Metroid *literally* oneshot Samus. She was down at 1hp. There is no reason for the SA-X to finish her off, turning its back to the rampaging OMetroid in the process. There is a theory that the X knew it couldn't defeat the OMetroid on its own so it did the best it could and then let itself be absorbed by Samus, giving her the power to defeat it. After all, there are at least 9 other SA-X and they could in theory just keep producing more, but the Metroids are their only serious predator. Omega Metroids are more or less their strongest known form. Samus by herself can't destroy the X, the Metroids can.

Hola! I was one of the rabid commenters from that Metroid History video of yours. I wanted to say I'm glad you visited Fusion, and that I'm sorry for being a little defensive. You said it best by saying that most people just forget about Fusion and go straight to talking about Prime or Other M. I feel like I didn't really give you credit for the quality of the video either. I think videos I've watched so far are very clean and professional. You clearly put a lot of time, effort and thought into them.

JUst started Fusion about a week ago and I love it. Even though it doesn’t have the exploration that typically comes with metroid games I like the straightforward approach it takes to Being a little different and more direct.

I'll always be biased for Metroid Fusion for being my first Metroid game. Only saw that my friend had it, so I had to pick it up myself. I agree with what you got to say on how it could have been better compared to Super Metroid, It didn't have the kind of exploration other Metroid games did with no real change to the upgrades. The story near the end could have had a nicer flow to it, and sometimes the text boxes go on for a little too long. But man did that game nailed what a game should feel like. From having the tightest controls on the GBA, to delivering atmospheric textures and sound that makes you feel isolated and almost trapped in this abandoned space laboratory with hostile creatures and SA-X. The game had a mission to give an almost theatrical experience without only relying on text boxes, and those experiences are my favourite in the series.
