Building a large shed this spring/summer and this video drops like it's just for me. Thanks!

I learned this the hard way. The 80 yr old 10×20 garage survived till we had the roof on but walls definately bowed out when i fell into one if them like bowed a ft or more it sprang back when i took my weight off if it but very good point!! I had no prior framing experience. Older mom trying to get my son some carpentry experience by putting new trusses & roof on we built ourselves. Small enough project The shed survived & straight & solid & will stand another multiple decades...

We used to frame the wall on the ground, then measure corner to corner to square it. Nail it to the floor to keep it square and then add sheathing. Once it's stood up we add the bracing on the inside while the rest gets framed

The guide nail under the brace is a nice touch.

I've never framed anything from scratch. That was educational! Thanks!

How long of a 2x4 do you recommend for cross bracing on an 8' tall x 16' wide 2x4 wall? Is there a rule of thumb for how many studs each brace should cover?

Hi, I have a question about the swaying of the side walls. How is this secured? There are diagonals at the ends, but if it is a wider and longer shed, then this is obviously not enough.
@gregvancomАй бұрын
Use as many as you need and for longer walls space them about 10 or 12 feet apart running perpendicular to the long walls.

@gregvancom I meant the front and back sway. Not towards the ends. Of course, you can put a diagonal along the wall, but if there are no interior walls, how can you secure this sway with rafters and ceiling beams?

When you show the very first brace - you say "It needs to be nailed to the top plate and bottom plate and also to the studs in between.". When the video does the play back - it shows the very first nail in between the two top plates. My question is - which of those two plates do you want to fasten to? The top or bottom of both in this scenario?

Makes sense.

Why not add the shear sheathing to a squared 2by wall on the floor, then raise it up? Assuming your floor is level
@cheeseymccheese7249 Жыл бұрын
It can still easily shift. If you think its straight i challenge you to measure diagonal corner to corner and see how far your out
@GrampalettasCamp Жыл бұрын
@@cheeseymccheese7249 thanks. So if you do it as I suggested and the diagonal shifts, as evidenced by neither end being plumb, I can get it back using the diagonal bracing. Right?

Straight, Plum, and Level are all relative to the goal. Try telling Walt Disney that in a meaningful way. The goal should always be Strong, Safe, and Satisfying.
