THANK YOU for all the feedback on my shed build series! Is this bracing enough? Should I also sheet the interior of these walls?

Nice shed and I enjoyed the series. Yes thats enough bracing. Regarding the bracing you made. Did you angle them both the same way or in opposite directions? I would have put them in the same spot and in opposite directions like an x-brace. But I think you could have just used some 2”x4” blocking around the shed and made it plenty strong.

Yes, I added 2 of the strap braces to each side of the shed, in opposite directions. So they effectively function as an X brace across the narrow walls. Several years have passed, and this shed has not budged an inch. I'm really happy with how it turned out. Now... if I could just get the junk inside organized... 🤣

Thanks for your help. It's gusting 70mph today and my shed is moving about an inch at the top. I'm just about to drywall, so this bracing idea will save me grumbling at cracks!

The drywall will likely be enough to increase your shear strength on its own. Esp if you add some backing in the corners and use it to span and join some of the vertical studs.

You could have generally used 2x4 bracing instead of metal bracing to shore up those skinny front walls. It would have been plenty strong with 4 or 5 of those and you can turn them into small "shelves" with a bit of hardboard on the front (which also will help a bit with shear if fastened well). Great spot for small tools, cans, etc.

The triangle bracing looks good but the small bent “cross bracing” I don’t think would do much of anything unless you had opposing bracing that pulled against each other..

You mentioned that you installed the fortification in each of the four corners of your shed. Did you do that for each corner of each wall (total of 16), or just each corner of the shed? And if it was for each corner of the shed, how did you choose which ones? Thanks very much
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Terry - I added it to the corners on the narrow walls only (4 install locations, with 2 brackets (one high, one low) at each install location). My concern with needing this reinforcement was related to the shed experiencing shear forces from wind hitting the long walls effectively trying to push the shed over. Adding this reinforcement to the narrow walls stiffened up the whole structure.

This was a very good, and informative series! It was nice to watch your average homeowner do the research and undertake the project, but also showcase the mistakes where you learned. I'm curious to know the total cost, maybe you could to a short video breakdown, so it could give an idea of cost before undertaking. If you already answered this sorry, and would you direct me to that answer.

Hi Joseph! All in the shed cost somewhere between $3500 - $4000, including buying a few new tools. In round numbers, the concrete was around $500, the framing lumber was about $1000, the sheeting + trim + fascia was about another $1000, and all the roofing materials, fasteners, door hardware, paint, odds and ends came to another $1000 or so. When I started the project I set out to track every expense so I could do a clear cost breakdown, but I only had a certain amount of spare time I could work on the shed over last summer, and filming a project like this takes WAY longer than you expect... I wound up not doing a very good job of tracking costs. Hopefully the numbers above give you at least a ballpark. Also note that lumber prices fluctuate quite a bit, and when I built this lumber was more expensive than now. If I built it now, all the framing lumber and OSB sheets would have cost significantly less. Thanks for the feedback, and thanks for watching!

Where did you purchase the triangle corner braces? Are they Simpson Strong-Tie?

I watched your video on how to build the J-bolt holders to anchor the walls to the concrete floor. And I've done the same thing. I'm planning to sit the 2x4 walls directly on the edge of the concrete pad (4-1/2" thick concrete pad) the same way you did. But I've seen other videos where they say to build the pad bigger than the footprint of the shed so that the walls do not sit on the edge of the pad, but are moved in an inch or so. My shed will be 10 foot x 8 foot. Have you had any problems with sitting your walls on the edge of the pad?
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY Жыл бұрын
No problems at all. In fact, I specifically set mine up this way, so that the siding on the outside would overlap the outer edge of the concrete. This prevents water from ever dripping onto the edges of the concrete, standing there, seeping under the walls, and causing rot. If you do make your pad larger than the footprint of your building, I recommend that you include some fairly wide overhangs on your roof.

@@AmplifyDIY Thanks! That's exactly what I was thinking too, to have the siding drape over the edge of the concrete so that there's no flat concrete edge for water/snow to sit on.

Great video, just as all the other 21! You are an inspiration! I think that I would have braced those wall with two diagonally placed 2x4’s and than nailed and glued an OSB or plywood board on it. I’m not at all saying that that’s better, it’s just my thoughts.
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY 5 жыл бұрын
That certainly would have worked as well, and I thought about internal 2x4's, but decided that metal braces would be both easier to install and stronger... I would not have to cut any angles on the 2x4's, pre-drill holes, worry about splitting them, etc. That's why I did it the way I did. Thanks for watching!
@Conservator.

AmplifyDIY Yes your braces are a simple and elegant solution! I’m sure they are strong enough. They will only do there job in tension though. That’s why installing two of them at opposite angles was a good idea. Just thinking out loud.

Simpson hurricane ties during build may work
@AmplifyDIY

Hi Lyle - I did use simpson hurricane ties for attaching my roof trusses to the top plates of my walls, but I don't think they would have made a lot of difference to the shear strength of these little narrow walls. Thanks for watching!

Nice work on the shed. Also, great PC job on handling the critical feedback and turning it into a positive. I watched all your shed videos and found them very helpful and informative. However, from those videos I'm not sure you ever mentioned your name and what region or state you reside in, or if you did, I missed it. I'm not trying to be creepy, but it would be nice to at least address you with a name and not "hey you" or dude... Nevertheless, your shed came out beautiful. I'd like to know if you have the sketchup plans available, and or the total cost spent for the build.

Hey Scott, Thanks for checking out my build series - I'm thrilled you found it useful! You can just call me AmplifyDIY - suits me just fine. :) I'm located in the northwest of the US. Regarding cost: All in it was around $3500, including the slab, some tools I had to buy, etc. As for sketchup plans: I only really have the model that I made in sketchup - it's not super detailed as far as a plan goes, but it is what I used to determine angles, lengths, cuts, etc. If you look close you'll see there are a few differences in the sketchup and the final design as well. If you would find it useful, I'm happy to share it with you: drop an email to amplifydiy@gmail.com and I'll shoot the file right over in a reply. Thanks again for watching!
