This is a great and well thought out point of view! I’ve red that book and I’m experienced with Merle in border collies and Aussies: I’ll give you my two cents😊 So three things: 1. Merle is a gene, yes, but it is a pattern affecting gene just like Tri, brindle, sable, etc. all colors and patterns are just different 🧬 2. You can build a line off a Merle by also keeping its solid color production and breeding back to the Merle sibling’s “line” later down and keep the resulting merle and non Merle offspring, then repeat! 3. When it comes to building a line, remember that breeds with Merle have had lines for hundreds of years! Catahoula Leopard Dogs, Great Danes, Dachshunds, Great Danes, Alapaja Blueblood Bulldogs, etc. IMO As long as a breeder is responsible, makes non Merle x Merle pairings, and health/color tests, ain’t nothing wrong with Merle (from a breeding perspective)

Skin allergies,yes!! Everything else,absolutely not!! My merle American pitbull has the best physic,sweetest soul,and he is by far way more intelligent then any other pit I've had. I've had 5 beside him, everything from red nose,gator,blues,and tri color. He understands stuff that blows me away. I do agree that double merle is a definite no no.. The merle gene is dominant and should only be bred to solid/tri/black tan. Catahoula leopards can have merle puppies even if both parents aren't merle.

The vet told me years ago that a merle is just a defect or bad gene that was considered a bad dog, and they would sell for cheap when she was younger because you might end up with a dog what some kind of health issues.

Merle doesn't carrier thru the genes like tri does it's either visual merle or non visual merle (cryptic) but it's still a merle . And all pups off a merle breeding that aren't visual merle should be color tested to see if they are cryptic merle .

Many dog breeds have merle coat patterns as one of the coat patterns offered. The rule is don't breed merle to merle to avoid the double merle health issues. Aussies come in several coat patterns - merle, tricolour, bicolour etc. Same for shelties, collies, welsh corgi, dachshund, cattle dogs, along with many others. Breeders will typically breed a merle with a tri or bicolour dog. Some puppies may be merle, some will produce other coat patterns, and none will be double merle. If you have diverse breeding stock, use stud dogs or import new blood, and aren't inbreeding/linebreeding, you shouldn't have issues coming up with pairings.

That’s a generic question that requires an extensive answer from someone like him. It’s a different level from throwing store bought dog food in a bowl. He feeds these dogs real food for what this breed needs. That won’t be the same for a different breed. I feed deer, goose, doves, pigeon, squirrel, rabbit, beef, raccoon, chicken, fruits, vegetables, some grain, spices and other things that are ok in small amounts like garlic but can make them sick if you’re not paying attention to how much. It’s what my hunting dogs benefit from. Some of its cooked and some is raw. If you take feeding your dog seriously start researching your breeds specific needs. My dogs run 60-80 miles a week just for conditioning plus whatever they run hunting. It’s not cheap and it’s time consuming.

I'm late on this but take into consideration a couple of things but the main things are genetics, intent of use, and personal desire. You want to start out with something affordable and healthy. Of course you can always do research and feed them raw food if you have those type of resources but if commercial food, look at the first couple of ingredients (which should be meat) learning what "meal and by product" mean. That'll tell you the type of meat that's in there. Then look at other beneficial food options that you may like to feed. Keeping in mind every one has an opinion but you do what's best for you, why???? BECAUSE THEY'RE YOUR DOGS, THEY IN YOUR YARD, AND YOU THE ONE TO FEEDING THEM WITH YOUR MONEY! That's why. What I do, I've got bullies so I found an Amish guy who carries Valu Pak dog food. I chose that as a base because it's free of corn, wheat, soy, and something else. Can't remember right now. But anyway it's a high calorie food with 24/20 ratio. Some high pro dog food is designed for highly active dogs so the ingredients will keep the dog lean. I add 1/4 cup of Nature's Best Salmon, Sweet potato, and pumpkin. Fish is good for the skin plus the others are added for fiber and digestion plus the sweet potato adds a good sweet taste that they jump on. Also Pure Balance offers a Salmon food that I add at a 1/4 cup and they have a Grass fed beef and bison food that's 35/15 that I add a 1/2 cup of it. They are really high end dog food from Walmart but I'm not feeding a lot of it. Just adding it so it doesn't hurt my pockets. My dogs are supposed to big bone and thick so I had to search for high calorie foods that would stick and not just keep my dogs lean even though I'm looking for high protein foods. My dogs aren't really active like that so I feed the adults once a day and the younger pups twice and small pups I keep food available all times because their metabolism is so high because they're growing. I hope this at least get you started. Oh and watch the poop. A lot of piles mean the food is running through them and you're picking up dog food that you're wasting. If the poop is really soft, back off maybe a 1/2 cause you may be over feeding. And see if the poop firms up then.

Fish is another great point as well as checking their poops. I did forget to add in my reply that the amount of food fed to a dog is anywhere from 1-3% of their body weight. There are a few factors to help determine a healthier feeding schedule and food, daily activity levels, weight and breed will help determine what foods and how much each day. I prefer to feed twice a day especially during hunting season. 3/4 of their daily portion in the morning and the remaining 1/4 after we’ve been hunting or it gets to be 10 hours since their last feeding. Remembering to weight out each bowl with safe you money just the same as checking pool piles it there are signs

Many purebred breeds have merles. Don't breed merle to merle and honestly - stop with the line breeding in general. You have to be a very skilled breeder to do this and have comprehensive knowledge of the entire pedigree. Use stud dogs or import to diversify breeding stock.

I have a Merle . I know his mom and dad . I had a blue nose that passed almost a year ago from same dad different mom. We were offered 5k the other day . obviously we declined the offer. but I know it was not out of love , I know it was just to breed him and make money out of him bc of his pattern color. Some breeders could be irresponsible with any type of breed , some breeders would cross Doberman within the same fam . That’s wrong . Even if a dog is a blue nose but one of the parents is a Merle it would carry the gene most likely . I want another one but I want to wait until my boy is a bit older . He is such a love giver ❤.
