Don't get a root canal before watching this!
Ideally, you will never need a root canal but if you do you want to be informed of your options and how the procedure works.
A root canal is a dental treatment to preserve a tooth with an infected or inflamed pulp due to a deep cavity or trauma.
Despite its bad name, the dreaded root canal is not supposed to be painful.
However, root canals carry some risks. There is also much controversy about this treatment, which has caused concern and even fear.
This article will discuss what a root canal is, how to know if it’s the right treatment for you, its safety, what to expect, and more.
WHAT IS A ROOT CANAL?
Root canal therapy is a type of dental procedure to preserve a tooth after the tooth’s pulp has become infected or inflamed. This is usually due to a deep cavity or trauma to the teeth or face.
The pulp is the tooth’s inner soft tissue containing connective tissue, nerves, and blood vessels.
In a root canal procedure, your dentist or endodontist will clean out the infected tissue from the pulp chamber, then disinfect, fill, and seal the tooth. A crown will be placed over the tooth to preventing chipping or fracture.

I had a dentist say I needed a root canal 20 years ago, and I told him I wanted to think about it. I went to another dentist a week later, and said he could do the crown without a root canal and it worked fine. That was 20 years ago, and I still have the same old crown with no problems. I think it is a financial thing myself

Thanks for your comment, a dentist was trying to rush me onto a root canal with no other options and even in the x-ray there is still tooth material away from the nerve! I have no pain, sensitivity or anything indicating my nerve is damaged, no other tests were done to determine if a root canal was necessary. The doctor basically looked at the x-ray, peaked into my mouth and said "oh! Were gonna have to do a root canal and put a crown on." I'm feeling like it's a money thing too! Extra thousand dollars for a root canal

A root canal kills the tooth and then you have dead tooth in your mouth. Each tooth has over 2 miles of tubules or "canals" in the tooth that will house bacteria in your tooth since the blood supply has been removed during the root canal. This will always leach in to your system and can affect your organs over time. I had a root canal and for 10 years I had ear nose and throat infections every couple of months. I would take antibiotics and get better then start the process all over again. My doctor and dentist ran tests and both said I was fine but could not explain why I would catch everything from everyone and end up with infections non stop. After fighting with my dentist to pull the tooth, he sent me to a orthopedic surgeon who put me on a dental CT machine. Within 10 minutes of being there, he came in and told me that my tooth was infected all they way down in to my bone. He pulled the tooth and I have not had a single infection since then and it's been about 7 years. I never get sick now either even when my kids are getting sick and I actually have a lot of vacation time again which used to be negative. There was a great article explaining all this that recently disappeared so that is why I am taking the time to right this. I told another person about this and her uncle had been getting sick and could not figure out why. She told me that he had just had a root canal. She told him and he had his tooth removed and was well again in next to no time. The threat is real. I am so glad I found out why and life is so much better not being sick so much. Best of luck to you if you are reading this!

Always had very bad teeth and had my first root canal at 13. By the time I was 22, I had most of my teeth root canaled. They lasted a good 40 years, even though I had some recapped later on. Now I am 65 and moving on to upper dentures, but I still have some lower teeth left. I probably could have bought a house with the money spent on teeth, but to be pain free and a decent smile means everything.

Removing the nerves from inside your teeth is a MUCH more painfull and complex procedure in comparison to a simple filling wich in some cases dont even require local anesthesia. Sometimes depending if theres infection present or not, or the size of the infection, the anesthetics dont work all that well due to the pus there, and the procedure ends up being a bit painfull.

I had a root canal some years back. It was recommended. The alternative was to have the tooth removed, which causes surrounding teeth to move back, which could be problematic. I had my first visit before the lockdown. Before I could go for my second visit, there was an emergency lockdown and hospitals stopped attending to non-covid related problems and situations that weren't an emergency. No matter how much I tried to explain that I had to continue my root canal procedure, they refused to attend to me stating than it wasn't an emergency and the procedure required the emission of aerosols which was "high risk". It took me monthssss to finally get the second visit after the ease of the lockdown and by then, it was already infected again. I had to keep coming every week for 2 months before everything was finally okay. It was really a terrible period for me.

Less of a pain in the ass to just have the tooth pulled. Cheaper and there’s no possible way someone can not remove a tooth without plucking up. Then after the space has healed, go get a partial! Lots cheaper and works just fine. My teeth never shifted. At all after getting one pulled. Top or bottom. That’s a scare tactic.

they are..the shell. think of it like your head/skull. and the brain is the root canal. they remove the insides (root) and no more pain cause thats the thing that send signals to the brain of pain. and the shell (tooth inside the gum) remains in there (much better than a implant/metal screw) and the top of the tooth is circled, where the crown sits..and this is superior to a total removal an a implant placed, cause your body can still communicate with the shell still inside the gum. i have both..the one where i had rootcanal/crown its like nothing ever happened..its wonderful ten years later. my implant where everything was removed an a foreign metal post to hold the other version of a crown, i still get slight pain cause my body think sometimes its a bad thing in my jaw..even with bone/plasma preservation didnt help all the way . i still get issues..and for 2 years now its an off feeling from 2/10 pain...unlike my normal root canal/implant version (saved tooth) where its great, cause my shell is still there connected to everything

@ssj3vegett0 2 жыл бұрын
@@Ethan-ox4ck yea the root canal is removal of what makes the tooth alive. why you feel (pain) if they remove it, and replace it with an inert substance, there isnt any pain anymore cause tech its dead. just the tooth is left where it still can perform its mechanical functions (chewing) and i hope your getting a crown, so it protects the top where the holes went to reach the root . after the procedure youll feel better, just some pain where the needle went in to numb you, probaly only thing you feel for a day..then in maybe a week, two max, if your getting root/crown same day..itll feel normal again like nothing happened...and then like me 10 years later still going strong like it has always been there..trust me you want this over a implant...implant is when nothing else can be done, and you still want a tooth to eat with, but itll always be a wierd feeling 2/10 atleast how its been for me for 1 1/2 years

My childhood dentist told me I needed a root canal because I had a bump around my gum (I now believe it was a callous from my retainer). He sent me to another dentist to have it done even though my dentist had done root canals. The other dentist told me it would take about 45 minutes for the whole procedure. And, he had taken X-rays. Nevertheless, over an hour into the procedure, I asked why it was taking longer than the allotted time. He answered that my tooth had done its own root canal. Apparently, our own body can heal itself and do what needs to be done. So, I asked him why would he create an artificial root canal if my body had already done it (apparently he had already drilled through my calcified tooth, according to him). He told me that he had issues with his tooth when he was younger and didn’t want me to go through it, too. He didn’t disclose everything before the procedure. I still have that small callous, and that tooth has slowly moved out of place which has allowed the other teeth to move out of place as well. All those years of retainers and braces still didn’t stop that tooth from shifting. No disclosure about what would happen after the fact. 🤨😡

One eventuslly got infected and I chose to pull it. It cost me a grand total of $150 instead of $800 to $1k for root canal much less another cap. Second tooth (other failed cap) is now cracking and infection starting. Called around and lowest price quoted for extraction was $59 initial exam and $500 to pull, no antibiotic. He will give me a perscription to fill. What does a root canal cost in 2023 without dental insurance? One office wanted $800 for the extraction. Said I must have a bone growth powder fill in for the empty jaw socket which is an additional few hundred.....what???

I got a root canal some six months ago. One of the least painful dentist experiences I have ever had.. and that is to say there was no pain whatsoever during the procedure itself. There was a minor discomfort during the part where he melted the rods that are inserted into the roots, but that's more from the heat transfer to the healthy teeth flanking the tooth getting the treatment. The tooth itself, naturally, felt nothing. This was done on the first tooth behind the upper right canine. I did not get a crown for this procedure. It was just treated as a regular, if longer, cavity fix. The main source of tears would have been the cost. It was some ~$800 total for two roots on the same tooth. However I was relieved when it was done. I had gone with an uncomfortable pressure at the root of my tooth for easily 7-8 years. I believe some filling I had gotten earlier had managed to kill the nerves, so I actually did a big part of the root canal with no anesthetics. Not the cleaning of the roots part, but the drilling down to the very end of the root. It was the initial treatment before the main one. He made sure I could feel nothing. Using the electric impulses. Heat. Poking at the nerves. I felt nada. For all I knew he was just carefully grazing the top layer of the tooth with a feather and it felt no different. That was my experience with root canals. No pain. No reason to fear anything. Just the cost is a bit unfortunate, but it is a highly specialized procedure that should actually be possible to avoid relatively easy as long as you just keep a decent oral hygiene.

Another reason you might get a root canal. Because your dentist tried to give you a crown you didn't need and rolled over and caused peripheral damage to your inferior alveolar nerve during anasthesia, and then your dentist refuses MRI or other soft tissue imaging, saying that it must be inflamed nerve in the tooth. Giving you a root canal you didn't even need because they would not admit they messed up with anasthesia... but hey, at least I get a case out of it.

There is a real issue in the US with Medicaid and Medicare not covering these procedures. In Georgia all that Medicaid covers for adults is extraction (even for teeth that don't really need pulling). I’m convinced that it’s depending on who you go to to get the root canals done. Had to go to an endodontist for my front teeth (injury from the age of 7) and found to have an infection going on 25 years that I didn’t know. While he was amazing with everything regards to making sure I was informed, comfortable gave me breaks when needed. But the healing process once the numbing went away was painful. Yesterday I went to get my temp crowns at my general dentist and he asked if I had an appointment for another root canal on a different tooth (due to cold sensitivity) and I said not yet. He did it on the spot after doing my crowns and I’ve yet to feel pain from it. It’s sore only when pressed on my cheek, but other than that, I am golden! I love my dentist so much because they treat me like family and never judged me for my poor hygiene due my my mental health.

@@earlysda they have cured me of my fear of dentists! surprisingly, I found them at random because they were close to where I used to live. Over the new years of 2017 into 2018, an abscess formed in my lower right molar and I was miserable, crying, hadn’t slept in days. The day after new years of 2018, I called them and told them what was going on and Bobby (the owner and receptionist who is a frikin queen and doll!) asked me why I didn’t call sooner. I told her “cause it was new years and I didn’t want to bother you guys’s holidays”. She told me “oh honey, screw the holidays when it means your life is on the line!” That’s when I 1. Found out the an abscess could’ve killed me, and 2. They were the right people. She had me come in that same day. When my dentist found that the infection was too much and probably had to go to an orthodontist to get it removed, they pulled the strings to have me brought in that same day because he was booked till the next month. They literally go above and beyond. I eventually moved after my divorce that same year and live over an hour away from them now, but when a second abscess appeared several years later, I begged my partner to take me to my original dentist. So he drove me the hour and change to them and they remembered me after so many years! They made me feel so welcomed and at home again. They also asked what the orthodontist did (if he put me to sleep) and I said no, I was awake and he used normal numbing stuff, so he decided to do it for me. Again, like with the root canal I mentioned before, he did the extraction on the other tooth and again, NO PAIN! It’s like wtf is going on?! He’s got the magic touch! I’ve recommended him to anyone who listens to me because I swear, Dr. Nazzaro is a godsend and does things painlessly and gently.

My dentist gave me the option of a root canal or extraction, but I don't have the expertise to make that decision. All I know is that my tooth is infected all the way to the root and is causing immense pain. I don't see why I'd want to keep a tooth that is infected. It seems like getting it extracted would prevent any future infection. Not to mention, if I got a root canal, I essentially have a dead tooth in my mouth. At that point, saving your real tooth doesn't really seem important. What I do know is that when the dentist told me my options, he seemed more confident about extraction versus a root canal.

So I am told I need my first root canal. I have so many questions. 1. why can't they just use antibiotics to clear up the infection and NOT have to hollow out my tooth? 2. when they take the pulp out, how does the tooth get nourished without the pulp, blood flow, etc that they remove? 3. My tooth has been sensitive to pressure for over a year now - from the moment my dentist filled a small cavity that was below the gum line on the front surface of #19. In all that time, this sensitivity has not gotten worse but it has not gotten better. I hesitate to get my tooth hollowed out (and thus weakened?) when this sensitivity has not gotten any worse over time. Maybe I don't really need a root canal? 4. I have been on Alendronate (for osteoporosis) for 3+ years now. Should I go off this medicine between getting a root canal? 5. I have been rinsing with warm salt water 3-4 times a day since my dentist told me I may need this root canal. I read that warm salt water can help clear up a tooth infection. Might this help me to avoid needing that root canal? I am seeing the endodontist tomorrow for an evaluation. I will ask him all these questions. But any "second opinion" I can have from you might help me decide if I should go ahead with this or not - or at least comfort me if I do have to get this done. Never had a root canal but as a great example, a friend had 7 of them + crowns. He got them 24 years ago, zero problems to this day. Testament to how far a dentist who knows what they're doing goes. Meanwhile I had one of my extractions fail; I got dry socket (unimaginably painful, literal 11/10 pain if ever it existed and whoever invented that paste is a saint), which then turned into a nightmarish systemic infection - through no fault of the dentist, I was just too rough with the clot and dislodged it then didn't clean it diligently enough. There are risks to everything. You introduce bacteria into your bloodstream every single time you draw blood, doesn't matter if it's a tiny papercut or what and yet you obviously aren't dead or sick 24/7. You're infinitely more likely to get an infection from a cut than a properly sealed root canal. I've never understood the fearmongering about them.

"properly sealed" is the problem. You can't expect every dentist, or any professional in any field to always try their hardest, to always do their best job or even for every person in that field to meet the bare minimum standards. You have to operate with the assumption that someone might screw up.

Great video! You state that after treatment, the tooth needs a crown, not a filling. What if the tooth already has a crown that they drilled through to do the root canal? Can that be filled to save the existing crown? I just had tooth #3 done which has an existing crown which is about 15 years old.

The more I read through these comments makes me realize there’s big money in the long term come back customer, lots of fear mongering about extraction but I’m at the point where I’d rather just be one and done and not worry about the dead tooth getting infected again from residual bacterial growth left behind after the first time. At this point I can’t save this molar anymore but I can still save the rest. It sucks it got to this point but I think my body can feel that this tooth is just done. I’ve tolerated this thing for so long it’s way past too and now my body is literally crying begging me to pull it out. Not much left of the tooth anyway.

I am desperate for some real dental advice!!! :( To anyone that can spare their time and expertise: I had a Root Canal 4 months ago on a “hot tooth” molar #30 that was so sensitive, I couldn’t even be numb the whole way. The procedure itself was traumatic and painful. About 5 weeks ago, the pain came back. I went to my dentist and they suggested it was the crown being too big, they adjusted and the pain came back days later. I went in again, and they adjusted the crown further, insisting it wasn’t an infection. Pain, again, came back days later. Finally they took a CT Scan that showed a canal was missed, so I had a retreatment done later that week. For the first 3 days, I felt absolutely great! Then the pain came back worse than ever in the middle of the night, so bad that I went into the ER for a stronger painkiller. I was desperate for a 2nd opinion, so I went to another dentist that morning and he prescribed me steroids for inflammation, and a narcotic to help me get through the next few nights. The pain significantly subsided over that week, and the “hot tooth” feeling has finally gone away, but my tooth is still sensitive to touch and I definitely can’t chew on it. Today was my 2-week post retreatment check-up, my endodontist at my regular dentist office took another CT Scan and sat with me to show what she looks for. She insists there is zero infection present (she prescribed me antibiotics just in case) and that the root canal looks successful. She said although it may be frustrating to hear, she really wants to save the tooth and to asked me to wait 2-more weeks to see if it “heals”, as retreatment can be more invasive than the initial root canal. At what point do I go for extraction? I’m able to get by the day with regular Advil at this point (before I needed tramadol to get through the night) but shouldn’t I be concerned the tooth is still sensitive to wiggle 2-weeks after treatment? I should add, the man that performed the root canal to begin with did NOT perform the retreatment. I absolutely refused to go to him being he has rough hands and zero sympathy with trying to get me properly numbed. I appreciate anyone that’s taken the time to read this today,

Do some serious research on why you should never get a root canal treatment. Even the dentist that invented the procedure says you should not do it. You may have life long health issues if you do. My wife is a surgeon and last week she had a tooth removed rather than have root canal. It is possible that you could suffer for decades with health problems that you do not realise are related to the root canal.

@@sidecarmisanthrope5927 thank you for your comment! I ended up making the decision to have it removed. It was an emotional roller coaster because even than, my dentist kept insisting we could save it, so there was always that part of my brain asking if I was making the right choice. It’s been 6 weeks since it was yanked and this is the first time I’ve felt relief in a long time. I’m positive it was the best decision for this specific tooth.

I would recommend always going to a specialist endodontists for root canal treatments (RTCs) especially for rear teeth. Specialist endodontist do RCTs everyday so are more practiced and they often have more specialised equipment, so there's a better chance of successfully cleaning out the root which is critical for RCTs. General dentists have less practice at doing RCTs and if it fails you can end up having to go to a specialist endodontist to get in redone so it ends up costing more.

I've had 4 root canals, and everyone of them have broken off leaving the roots intact. I currently have an appointment tomorrow Aug. 9, 2023. I let the dentist talk me into a root canal. I store I wouldn't have another one done. And just have the tooth pulled. Well here we go again. Hopefully this one won't break off like the others have within 6 months to 2 years. I have 3 old gold crowns. I should sell the gold for scrap.

I started having pain in my tooth back in April of 2022 and my dentist said I had TMJ. I went back multiple times in 2022 because of that tooth hurting. Then on January 3rd of this year he said I had a mid size cavity in it. He fixed it the same day. But I have been in pain ever since. He told me that it was medical pain and now he says it needs a root canal. He is supposed to be the best dentist in my area. How can a dentist do this to someone and cause pain just to make more money. It is pressure sensitive and the infection has a good chance of traveling to another tooth. What should I do. I brush but because of a medical condition I have dental problems a lot

Question. I've no pain, or sensitivity in my first molar. A new pop up dentist I visited mentioned I would need a root canal because the x-ray images showed I had gray spot (cavity) close to the nerve. She mentioned there was no swelling and she even tested it, by freezing a white substance and placing it on the molar. I was fine. I didn't feel it. She mentioned my gums were healthy. The tooth is fine for now, but as a precaution she wants to take care of it because it was worrying her. Would I need a root canal truly? I'm doing research to make sure I don't go through anything unnecessary. Afterwards, she suggested a porcelain cap for the tooth after the procedure. P.s. The tooth is intact, no cracks, changes in color, fistula, etc. Thank you in advance if you're able to respond.

Doctor, thx u. Is Amoxicillin adequate, in a lite - moderate infection, not severe? How does it tend to work out in practice - as a % guesstimate, how many people Don't respond to amoxicillin. (Please don't say "depends on the bacteria" - as they aren't cultured in real life). I've just briefly read there may be some bacterial resistance to it, but only dentists know IRL! Also, are antibiotics useful in reducing any residual bacterial inflammation that may reside in surrounding bone, after a RCT is done? You are the only dentist/video that has explained that an infected root can prevent you from getting numb, because the area becomes too acidic & dilutes the novocaine or lidocaine, great to know. I thought it was just the nerve was too overly stimulated, & the novo/lidocaine isn't strong enough to overcome that level of pain. This may explain why some people say their root canals were painful, while others say theirs weren't. Excellent to know! TIA

Good day I do hope you see this sooner than later Doc. I am from Trinidad and Tobago. I started the root canal on what appeared to be a fractured tooth. However, after the first session of the procedure, I am in tremendous pain and swelling(quite noticeable)? What do I do ....Currently, as I type this is 12 hours after the first session. Its 4am and the pain is so intense I cant sleep. Antibiotics and pain killers don't seem to be working. I am wondering if should I head back to the dentist today? Should I find another? Oh boy I had that problem a few years back. The dentist had me come back every week for more antibiotics and they would scrape the area trying to get pus out but there was never a drop of pus and the antibiotics were killing my stomach but did nothing for the tooth. After about a month of total agony I went back and let them have it. I screamed that they were just taking my money and doing nothing at all to help me. I demanded they pull the tooth. They did and what relief OMG. And surprisingly they sent me a check for everything I paid them for that tooth. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Lots of bad dentists out there unfortunately.

I had root canal on a molar only two days ago. It didn't hurt that much and, in fairness, as the dentist was clearing out the tooth I could smell the rotten pulp-it wasn't pleasant. I was in two minds as to having it pulled, but decided to hold on to the tooth. It's still a bit sore, particularly when I bite down on something. I hope it settles down.
