Great idea with the handle and spring latch. I also used barrel bolts on the inside of my cargo trailer, but I attached the bolts above the door about 6” in from door pulleys. The bolts drop down into holes in the top frame of the door. The latches don’t become trip hazards and someone could use a six foot pry bar and never get into the rear door. I will definitely be adding the extra clasp to lock the side door open. Look forward to checking out more of your videos.

Why not just close the hasp and put a paddle lock on it then you can’t get locked in regardless if someone puts the locking arm back over hasp you can just push the door and it will push locking arm out of the way instead of drilling holes in side of trailer to install another hasp on other side

I guy I used to hang out with once in awhile in the 80's went on to become a police officer. A few months after he was no longer considered a rookie and was allowed to patrol alone he was doing a police report at a construction site near the end of the day about some stolen tools. After he got done with the report he needed to take a crap bad. He hit one of the porta potties on the site, heard someone jiggle the door outside but thought it was just someone else trying to open the door and didn't see the occupied indicator. When he was done he found himself locked in it after the site had closed down for the day. Someone on the site as it was shutting down had padlocked it from the outside. Those doors are flimsy so he bent the door open toward the bottom and tried to crawl out. He got stuck, was struggling, tried to take his duty belt off and "somehow" managed to shoot himself in the ass. He got on the radio on a secure channel, told dispatch what happened and he needed assistance and an ambulance. He also asked that this be kept on the down low and he was not severely injured. Of course dispatch blurted out on the multi agency non secured channel, "Shots fired officer down!" Every law enforcement agency in the area rolled to the site including a couple of under cover Feds in the area and two police choppers just to find him stuck and wounded half in and out of a porta crapper. They got him out and to a hospital and managed to keep the incident out of the media. He recovered in a few days since it was just a deep grazing wound and powder burn and was back on the job. He earned a nickname though. Outhouse. That stuck with him to this day and was even his code name years later after he became a detective and later retired. I've forgotten his real name. Everyone just calls him Outhouse.

On my camper shell the door closure was a real bad idea by someone and yes I got locked in when someone push the outside handle into the indented space. So as soon as I got back from the camping trip I had to fix that problem. I used a piece of left over 3/4" plywood and cut it into a little square and glued it into the space so that the handle nolonger could drop into the recessed plate. I also put a lock on the inside of the door so I could lock it when I went in to sleep.

Most of our camping will be east of the Mississippi, so any opening must be screened.

When we need to get the pipe berths out of the way we just roll them up and hang them on hooks on the side wall. Believe it or not, Montana gets so buggy in the spring and early summer that we stay out of the woods! That's why you see us in the desert a lot.

You didn't need the extra hasp. You could have just locked the original hasp without the bar secured in it. However, I understand that aesthetics count for something.

I drilled out the rivet and replaced it with a 1/4 bolt and a wing nut. I run the bolt from the inside and the threads exposed, and screw on the wing not. At night time, I unscrew and remove the entire handle and place inside (next to my shotgun😬) and I installed a heavy duty slide lock on the inside that secures the door. With the bolt installed from inside out, you can’t get it out / off when the arm is in the locked position. At most... someone could take the wing nut... but can’t remove the bolt. I do like the idea of drilling a hole in the frame to allow an inch or so of ventilation, awesome hack!!! I’ll be doing that soon. One other thing I did... I installed several door “peep holes” like in your residential/ hotel doors. I put them inline with the screw holes, so they blend in very well. It’s not until I point them out to folks that them find em. I have one on each side. No need to pull back curtains to look out the windows... happy to send pics if need be.

Good question Mike! It's because a person could still place the bar across the door and tie it with a piece of string. The leverage of the bar itself would make it very difficult to open the door from the inside.

Be aware the RV locks are most likely all keyed the same, or a few variations. I know they are easy to pick. Keeping the latch system in place and still usable on the road is at least another barrier to entry when not being used. Of course the only barrier while sleeping inside is the RV lock and a shotgun. With democrats in charge of country may only have a single barrier soon.

What still worries me about this option is on my trailer there is still a 1" gap between the round verticle bar and the trailer outside wall. Before that we had a little swamp cooler that was a mechanics unit again direct drive they pull less than a RV heater motor and cool like crazy

Those are perfect as long as you're in a dry climate. We had them when I was a kid and they would make me gasp from the cold whenever I came inside on a hot day.

Gonagain Especially as a trailler doesnt have big windows like a caravan! Someone could lock you inside with no chance to get out! ( but maybe thats just my way of thinking. 🤔)

Just the fact that you kept the lashing bar and positioned it to cross over the rv latch is ingenious for locking up the trailer when away. To many times I have seen those rv locks busted with no problems. I do have a question about the rear door being locked into vent mode; how do you keep the bugs from creeping or flying in?
@gonagain5 жыл бұрын
That's something that could stand some improvement. We're usually in the desert and nighttime isn't a problem. It seems that the mosquitoes go to bed at sunset. Thanks for watching!

Robert Cgraggen- NW SELF RELIANCE & OUTDOORS , Suggestion. We camp in our van & for bugless ventilation I cut plastic screen bigger than the front driver/passenger windows & use magnets ( all 4 corners & a few in between the corners) to hold the screen on from the outside . Where the plastic on the rear view outside mirrors makes gaps I attached regular plumbers tape to the plastic. Magnets stick to it great. Lil round magnets found at most hardware stores. Rear vents come screened. (Usually) Gets nice airflow & keeps skeeters, bees & other asst pests out. When its time to leave just pull your magnets, roll up your screens, stash em & go. Cutting your screens to windows shape w a few inches bigger than glass all around makes for better/flatter fit. Flatter screen fits to door the less chance of a pest getting in.

Robert Cgraggen- NW SELF RELIANCE & OUTDOORS The latch bar is installed at the factory, he didn’t add that on himself. Also, “to many times...”, the correct spelling is “ too”.

@@gregflores8959 I thought my trailer was supposed to have the rv latch installed but they had the cam bar. Had the trailer dealer put an rv latch so I have both like he does.

A window big enough to get out of?
@clintstinytrailerconversio55603 жыл бұрын
I wonder if anyone has actually been locked in maliciously? It would be easy to be "locked" in to any trailer, cargo or RV. Even those without bar latches. A piece of strong duct tape could do it. Having an escape window would be an solution, which some have, but not most. Give people something to worry about and they are eager to oblige.

What if you just locked the existing clasp? Then the bar couldn't be put in to lock someone out?

Hi Jeff, If you just put the handle lever back over the door and tie it with string it's almost impossible to get out from inside.

@@gonagain I see smart criminal, why would somebody want to lock you in to your own trailer unless they were a murderer or or serial killer?

@@jeffmoore9179 Maybe just someone playing a prank, but why take the chance? It's an easy fix. Some people order their trailer without that bar and just use the RV lock. I leave mine on because it's more secure when I'm away.

I like your ideas! I'm a new subscriber and I've read your replies, in some of the comments below, on the RV latch installation and I've been looking at how other people have installed them in their doors. Everyone is saying how it was a difficult task and it turns out to be quite a lengthy process. I'm thinking that I might just go with some barrel locks, and a handle on the inside to save me the hassle, unless you'd like to post what not to do when installing the RV latch, lol. Love your channel!

Here's my take on installing that latch, which I did. The first day it drove me nuts trying to wrap my brain around it and I also made a mistake. The 2nd day the fog cleared and I saw it in a different light and got it done. It really isn't physically hard, you just need to take your time and figure out the geometry first.

@@gonagain Thanks, maybe I'll take the plywood off the door and have a look at it. I just received my 2021 Stealth Apache all aluminum trailer which was ordered in August of 2020, darn pandemic. Your latch looks like the AP latch available on Amazon? Was there a fitment issue because of the door not being as thick as an regular RV door?
