We got our first toy aussie a year and a half ago. She's a doll BUT she loses her mind over anything with wheels (bikes, cars, the vacuum, etc.). She leaps and barks like crazy and you can't do anything to snap her out of it; finally, a dog trainer found us a small prong collar, and that has been a game changer because it gets her attention. We just had an hour long walk and she only lost control for one weird scooter that rolled by. As she gets older, and now that we have the prong collar to help us when she gets fixated, she is learning to walk well on the leash regardless of what rolls by. As for energy, she's a nut lol. We walk her for least an hour a day at the off leash dog park, with a lot of fetch and running the whole way. Rain or shine, this dog needs to get out! We also play fetch inside in the evenings, and we have the horsewhip toy you showed in one of your earlier videos; horsewhip is her favourite game and hubby plays with her for at least half an hour a day. We have also done hearding training and work with her several nights a week. All that to say, we have still had some issues with carpet chewing (that was a new one to me 😬), but on the whole, she is becoming a lovely, obedient, and sweet dog and people ask us about her all the time. When they say they want one, I always say, lots of dog in a little package. You need to be ready!

Hi Headstronggirl, Thanks so much for the comment and it sounds like you are just headstrong enough for a toy aussie. Yes alot of dog in a small package and not for everyone. Of course, each is an individual and some are more laid back than others. Nice job with your little one!

We got a Border-Aussie when she was five months old and she was a holy terror for the first two years. Fortunately I was retired and able to keep an eye on her and give her things to do. Another fortunate thing is our two acre property. She would do a lot of exploring and chasing rabbits. She got to be a good rabbit hunter. Caught a few birds too. Sometimes i would have to make her take a break and drink some water. For some unknown reason i used the word "hey" when I wanted to tell her 'no' and that worked well like you suggested. Two or three times a day I spent time doing some basic training with her. This has resulted in good basic command understanding. This dog has always been comfortable on her back. She even sleeps that way sometimes. Thank You for putting these videos together!

Hi Todd, Thanks for sharing your experience with your "Bossie" Great cross! Sounds like you have just the right situation for her. She has found a "job" chasing bunnies and birds.

Hope your needed vacation was great. Great information as always. I really hope the person or others see this. We have two ACD (I've always trained my dogs myself no problems) so different then our Mini that I thought I was crazy. I found this channel went thru ALL the videos, retrained my thinking first, gave her a job/mind games/scent work/herding balls, night & day different dog. They can be barking I tell them Quiet and they stop. I do not pass out treats, over praise or coddle, in fact no issues with fireworks they have been going off already. The few dog fights I had stopped, they know that dog (which ever one is Mine and they don't do that to My dog-it's in a video). They are worked daily both brain and body and they are a dream. No local training was able to help me. But Sheila sure did. Don't give up you can do it. Trust me I did. 🐕

Puppy training begins the moment you bring it home. A good rule of thumb is to let them go potty after eating, playing, and sleeping. Be firm and consistent with Aussie puppies. Promote calm behaviour as much as you can. They'll bark out of sheer excitement. They're extremely loyal and want to be around you all the time. Crate train your puppy if you can't watch them all day. They don't know how to unwind on their own and they NEED sleep. You'll put a velociraptor to bed and in 2 hours, voila! You have a calm angel. Also, give them something tough to chew on. They can tear through anything quickly. And finally, no means no! Discipline your puppy so he doesn't grow up to an adult that you and others dread to be around. So many people give Aussies away for reactivity. They need strong leadership.

Good advice. But I don't use crates. Exercise pens are better in my opinion. I don't use "no" I use HEY. Loud and sharp. No is used a lot in every day conversation. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!

I’m a first time Aussie owner and was shocked at how intense my dog was! I’ve always had lab mixes and did a lot of research on Aussies so I thought I can handle it, but wow. My dog is now 3 (had him since he was a puppy) and still working with some reactivity issues. Just wanted to throw out a warning that it’s very hard to really grasp how intense they can be until you’ve experienced it first hand. Thanks for your videos!

I feel you!! We have a one-year-and-a-half-old mini aissue with a lot of reactivity issues. With Sheila's help and tons of videos we've been trying a lot of things and started to see progress. People said that for Aussies the 2-3 years old is the stage where they will become calmer. We'll keep the training and hopefully that time will come😅
