Mackenzie Phillips and Valerie Bertinelli performing "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" By Elton John and Kiki Dee
Season 2, Episode 12 - "Happy New Year"
First Aired: December 28, 1976
UPDATE:
[I see a lot of 'ignorant comments' about Mackenzie Phillips’s career and musical legacy, and I decided to leave a short informative update to bring her Baby Boomer "fans" up to speed.]
On Mackenzie Phillips's {Name Variants on her published works include: Laura McKenzie Phillips, Laura Mackenzie Phillips, Laura MacKenzie Phillips, MacKenzie Phillips
M. Phillips, MacKenzie, Mackenzie Phillips, McKenzie Phillips, Mack, (Molly Phillips)] musical legacy--
Actually she IS a singer, performer, musician, and song-writer... I am 33 and she is MY FAVOURITE SINGER! She has had a very loyal and dedicated fanbase and cult-following with Millennials, like myself for the last 20 years. She sang 3 seasons worth of original music as the character Molly Phillips on Disney's So Weird, [that is streaming on Disney+ NOW!] She also wrote a bunch of songs with her dad John Phillips as one of the new and last member's of The Mamas & the Papas during the latter years of the band's album releases and concert touring (mid 80's to early 90's). I'm a huge fan so forgive me as I continue...
She sang backup on her dad's album Pay, Pack & Follow, on her sister Bijou's album "I'd Rather Eat Glass" as well as Peter Tork's - "Stranger Things Have Happened". Interestingly enough, the only reason she got the role of Carol in American Graffiti [her break out role] was because an exec has seen her perform with her childhood band back when she was 14. She even recorded the song "Junk Food Junkie" with The Jackson 5 which was featured on their show 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘑𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘴 in 1976. She still writes music with her son Shane Barakan and recently had a performance at Agape International Spiritual Center in Beverly Hills, California. It's crazy to me that most fans from her breakout era know very little about her musical legacy. So far as thinking she hasn't made her mark like her two sisters and her parents did in the industry. It's actually quite far from the truth. She's a musical genius and an icon silently standing right along side her very musical family. Currently she is a drug and alcohol counselor at Breathe Life Health Center in Hollywood, and she is a co-host on her own recovery podcast called 𝘈𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢 𝘙𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴. New episodes are uploaded on iTunes and Spotify every Tuesday. FUN FACT: Her younger brother Tamerlane Phillips has also put out his own record in 2008 entitled 'Spiritual Blossoms' with Andru Cann. [Can you tell I'm a huge fan!?]

I heard Valerie say years later that she was terrified of having to sing when she was surrounded by actors with musical talent. She didn’t need to worry. She may not sing as well as them, but she pulled this off really well, and she looked adorable doing it.

Lol, I remember this classic scene. And from what I recall was that I read in the Entertainment news of those years, was that Elton John had seen this episode, himself. He was so impressed by Valerie's performance that he set out to meet her in person & thanked her. What a lucky lady! :)

was watching the season three intro that had a clip of where they were doing this and had to find the full scene. Valerie was just too damn cute doing this scene and Mackenzie Phillips was awsome as well. I remember seeing this as a kid, I had a huge crush on Valerie and safe to say still do. I can't believe they tried to make a piece of shit reboot of this show on Netflix, it will never have the chemistry of the original that made me fall in love with it. RIP Bonnie Franklin and Pat Harrington. Thank you for posting this!

I keep watching this and just had to say I don't ever really remember seeing anything with Valerie in it playing it and hamming it up like she did in this scene. I wish there would have been a few more episodes like this where they really showed that Valerie and MacKenzie's musical talent and show cased it more. Because they had more talent than sadly the majority of shit actors/actresses in Hollywood today.

It may be due to the low quality, this clip is a tv rip episode. I’ve been meaning to rip it and their other songs from the show in better quality myself from my own personal boxset. This is motivational reminder! Thank you! I would also like to recommend you checking out the iconic performance Elton and Keke Dee did together. Mack hits all her notes just like Keke to my ears. Val sings the male part, as a teenager. Lol. It was meant to be comedic in the episode too, as Val was miming piano and wasn’t a professional singer like Mack. Valerie chose the song because She was (and still is) a huge Elton fan. Also these two girls were at the height of their fame at the time and were two of America’s Sweethearts at that time. So, even if they truly bombed it, I doubt anyone would have even minded at the time lol. Mackenzie Phillips has loads of songs on KZbin. Check out her stuff from Disney’s So Weird (now streaming on Disney+). You won’t be disappointed! 🫶🏽❤️‍🔥
