Finally we started our descend into Upper Egypt. Instead of taking the night train to Luxor like most people we decided to hop from town to town - something we should better not have done. The sleeper train from Cairo to Luxor or Aswan is a train priced for foreign tourists. In the Cairo ticket center they will not sell you a day ticket in the cheap ac train down south. You can only get the expensive sleeper train. We thought it would be cheap AND interesting to be traveling down by the railway and see a few town on the way. First stop: Minya. Little did we know that this place had been subject to violence before. Radical groups were strong here and so there were some incidents with people ending up dead. That was years ago, but security is still tight. So when we arrived in Minya railway station we were welcomed not by friendly locals or touts but by the police who would from then on follow us around during our whole stay - which we then immediately knew was only going to be one day and one day only.
We went on a hotel tour with one officier but nobody in town wanted to give us a room so we had to stay in the Queen Isis hotel on the nile - a hotel which blew our budget completely. But here comes the story...
I am a professional writer gone vlogger. Let's see if I can make this professionally too. Please make sure you subscribe to my channel, Moonshine and Lemongrass and even share this video with your friends.

I live in El Minya and when I see tourists they always be surrounded by security guards and cops to protect them and follow them everywhere they go. El Minya have much history and culture behind it but sadly it all ruined by religious conflicts. El Minya is a big example for how religions can mess things up. Christians here had many hard times Cuz of radicals but now I think it is more safe than before I'm not religious my self I was raised as a Muslim but I am agnostic which is very uncommon here all people here are very religious. I think that El Minya would have been a very different place if it wasn't for the radicals. I hope you enjoyed your visit.

Hey there! Egyptian from minya here. The city is pretty safe but has been a target for terrorist attacks in the past years due to its high population of Christians. 21 christians in minya were beheaded on video by isis in 2016 which left a big scar on the country. The police presence is probably to protect you and the Christians of the city. It’s almost 50% Christian.
@yvesthesleeve
@yvesthesleeve 3 жыл бұрын
thanks a lot for this comment. I did not have the slightest idea. I knew it had something to do with the attacks in 2016 and 2016 but didn't know that it was actually beheading by isis. That is terrible. Are you a christian from there?
@awesome98rock
@awesome98rock 3 жыл бұрын
@@yvesthesleeve yes I am a Coptic Christian from there but I don’t live there anymore. The people are very friendly and hospitable but the security measures are exaggerated because of those past events. Minya is somewhat of the Coptic capital in Egypt and houses a tremendous amount of churches and monasteries. It’s also the home city of Akhenaten and Nefertiti, king tuts parents. The remains of the ancient city of Akhenaten still stand in minya until today. All the cities that you will pass from this point forward until Luxor are also very heavily populated with Christians.
@yvesthesleeve
@yvesthesleeve 3 жыл бұрын
@@awesome98rock thanks for this, I had no idea. I would have very much liked to explore the city, I did see quite a few churches in the train between Minya and Luxor actually, I talked at lenght to a guy but his English and my Arabic are both limited so I didn't learn so much. He did point out that the churches were Greek but apparently they are Coptic, although that might mean the same...? Not sure.
@awesome98rock
@awesome98rock 3 жыл бұрын
@@yvesthesleeve The word “Coptic” represents the adaptation of the Greek term for the indigenous people of Egypt, Aigýptios, in modern English. It originally wasn’t specific to Christians. But as Egypt became more Muslim, Arabs rulers begun referring to only the Christian population as Coptic. Coptic Christianity was founded by st.Mark as one of the 5 apostolic churches that wrote the bible. Out of the original 5, only the Church of Rome (catholic), church of Constantinople (Greek Orthodox) , and the church of Alexandria (Coptic orthodox) survive today. Egyptians who are “Coptic” perceive themselves to be in continuum with ancient Egyptian culture with a Greco-Roman fusion that manifested during the Roman Empire. The ancient Egyptian language exists and is used to this day in the Coptic church during liturgy. Its the transliteration of ancient Egyptians language into the Greek alphabet. Best I can call it it is a shared “Byzantium” culture between Greeks and Egyptians.

That is a very strange cruise ship indeed: Being able to board in Minya and I do not see the Egyptian flag on the bow's flagpole. I learned a little about Egyptian maritime law a few years ago when my friend and I wanted to purchase a retired Nile cruise ship for our personal use. The ship had to be government registered in order to raise the Egyptian flag. Also, maybe the cops were telling the truth that Minya is safe, since they can spare police manpower to follow an upright Swiss family. I guess Minya is running low on criminals:) Great vid from Minya!
@yvesthesleeve
@yvesthesleeve 3 жыл бұрын
I didn't look out for the flag, don't know anything about maritime law. The town might be safe but it is - so I learned today - a bit complicated. Apparently there is quite a big christian community, and there were some attacks in 2016 and 2017. Apparently Isis had 21 christians beheaded there and made a video. I do now understand why the police was so eager to protect us... probably no more problem but you never know...

When one of my friends took a picture from her balcony in Alexandria because none of the other American students had studied any Arabic at all, and I only had basic sentences like "I am staying at the hotel near Street X" we could not read the signs saying do not take pictures of the next door government facility. So we spent one afternoon ushered into a police station and the person in question's camera pictures were reviewed and erased. Why they put the foreign guests next to a government site, I will never know. I got permission to hang with my Coptic American-Egyptian friends from Minya one night who dropped me at the gate. I was thinking I was safely "home", only to be chased by a pack of dogs. I crawled up on a wall and called my Senegalese friend to come rescue me. I considered the political situation but never packs of wild dogs! Egypt is wonderful but I also know a friend who was shot there which is rare because it is very difficult to get a legal gun there.

You didn't mention anything about Akhenaton. Minya is important because this is where Akhanaton moved the capital of ancient Egypt when he declared the new religion of Egypt. The ruins of his city are a few miles south of Minya. Furthermore, the other thing you didn't mention was that Minya is highly Christian. The Islamic Brotherhood "Al Ikhwan" lurk there and even the local police has been infiltrated by them. Persecution of the local Christians is an ongoing thing but Egypt doesn't want the world to know about it. The local great church had a broken toilet back in 1992 and someone repaired the toilet. Under Islamic law from the hadith Sahih Muslim it is death penalty to repair a church in a land controlled by Islam. That church is surrounded by the Egyptian military to this day in order to prevent the Ikhwan from destroying it and executing any person who repaired anything in that church. In any case, Minya is one of the best cities in Egypt even though you must have a 24 hour police guard with you. You missed out by not visiting their great church and by not seeing the ruins of Akhenaton's city and tombs. Btw, I'm an Okie from Tulsa and I used to live in Egypt.

It feels more unsecured when you are around those corrupted police. Its truth that the militery corrupted regime made egypt unbearable even for Egyptians them selves. No wonder why no more tourists r coming to egypt anymore (before covid19). This regime is shame for egypt and Egyptians so stop making execuses for them.

Yes, I heard of that, it's crazy. But in Malaysia it is very vage about where to wear the mask. Originally the order was clear: wear a mask in crowded public places. They never said that you have to wear it everywhere outside. Something that would be crazy anyway, why would one have to wear a mask if walking in the street unless it's maybe a crowded street.

Looks like you and family the only guests in that boat hotel 😂. And allow me to voice my suspicion : the police have a cut from the hotel for bringing you in there, and they further hope for handouts for "protecting" you. Tragic: a country that used to be the most advanced and civilised in the world thousands of years ago is now a third world wreck.
@yvesthesleeve
@yvesthesleeve 3 жыл бұрын
Actually, there were some other guests too, and not sure about the "cut". I didn't look like that as we chose it. First we walked with one cop to the cheap hotels where they wouldn't give us a room. And I was also afraid that the cop would ask for a "tip" but none of them did in the end. I think they really have to do this. But I am not saying things like that are not going on... 😀. I must say though that all cops have been very friendly so far.
