Used to work in a cemetery. I’d go for a walk through the grounds and always be surprised at how young many of the dead and buried are. 45. 50. 60. You might not be here long. Enjoy it! Happily, I’ve been riding for so long that people seldom give me the ‘temporary Australian’ talk. All my friends and family either ride or have had decades to get used to the fact that I’ll never stop.

Thanks for the chuckle. After 45 years of riding (and counting), I've been flung, stung, bucked and f*&^%ed by motorcycles and loved every bit of it. I've also outlived some of those that told me I was a temporary Australian. Hail motorcycles!

This video could never be more on point! When I finally hit 60, someone I know on every corner is in battle for health even survival. And they are the ones wishing they would have LIVED a bit more. 2 years ago, I had total shoulder rebuild and was off the motos for 6 dismal months. I healed up right. As soon as I could I was back to riding. 2 months ago, I was riding a bit too fast on some heavenly-heavenly single track when I met Mother Earth head on. The impact destroyed my "good shoulder." All I heard was, "You know you're in your 60's and/or Those things are dangerous. You need to stop riding." Keep your dollars and your comments to yourself. I don't tell you what TV shows watch. We, riders, ride trails without mirrors for a reason. See you on the trails about August 2024.

As I rapidly approach 50 which is coming later this year, my mortality has been on my mind quite a bit lately. As a nurse I in particular get to regularly see first hand the what the ageing process can bring, and I regularly get told by my colleagues that they'll be seeing me sooner or later in the ED because I ride bikes. So even with all this in mind my attitude towards my bikes remains unflinching, may they pry the handlebars of my bikes from my cold dead hands. 😁

Right there with you boys, in age and concerns. I recently almost got taken out, and it changes every perspective. its all about QTR: Quality Time Remaining. Make the best of the healthy time you have before you find yourself unable to do those more 'risky' and fulfilling things. That is why I have no time for things like golf right now. I would rather ride and save the golf for when I am dead!

63 soon, still going. I also think what might help extend your riding career is to accept that you are simply not 18 anymore and need to "calm the f**k down". It's ok to just ride along at your own pace and not worry too much about the youngsters ahead trying to be Toby. These days, instead of math along the lines of " We must do this many kilometers of this track in this amount of time" it's more, "Let's toodle along, take in the sights we used to blast past and maybe actually see a bit more"......Life IS short, you're not likely to get to see every interesting track going, so make the best of the ones you will get to.

As you so eloquently put it in "why we ride" - I presents an excellent opportunity to leave this world the same way we entered it - screaming and covered in blood. What the sanctimonious who avoid all the fun that might come with a mortal cost fail to realize is; they are dying while they are still alive, it is arguably a state worse than being dead - they are the un-dead.
