Did you leave a gap at the bottom so not touching floor where the membrane fits and the same for plasterboard?

Tip - you can get a drill attachment for mixing the plaster (but also works for mixing paint and cement) for about 15quid but for 35quid from amazon you can get a standalone mixer paddle which works even better (ive had one for several months and works great)

I have this same issue. Damp at the sides of the chimney and the opposite side of the room. . I’m thinking it’s due to the concrete floor that was installed before I bought this house. Pretty sure there’s no dpc under the floor. Moisture trapped under the floor is working its way to the edges and up the walls.

I have exactly the same issue, it's on an adjoining wall as well, however it is also happening on the second floor. I think it's a combination of issues for me, no dpc, neighbors roof leaking and also my neighbors pebbledash goes right to the floor, which makes me think moisture is building up between the pebbledash and the house, slowly making its way into the side of my house.

Great video, lots of info, I have a similar problem with what I think are hygroscopic salts in my attic bedroom chimney breast, house is 100 years old, I've had all the usual outside chimney jobs done, and still get a problem, comes and goes with weather, I think my problem is I have a chimney cowl allowing the chimney to bteathe but will be allowing the moist air outside into the top of the chimney only, my question is, could I put the membrane over the top of my existing plaster and then create a new surface in front say like a nice panelles wall or brick slips, to prevent having to hack all the older plaster off, what's your thoughts. 🤔

Great video. Does the damp still sweat behind the plastics liner, would it not cause any issues in the future? Does the damp moistire only climb so far up the wall?

As an owner I would be happy if it lasts for 10 years or thereabouts. Even if it has to be redone later getting 10 years or so trouble free it will be worth it. 😊

Doing all that work, you've definitely got the skills to be able to plaster that small area. You can do it. Save more cash. Great effort

What about the mastic to fill the plug holes before inserting the plug? I use the membrane quiet often in my work it has many advantages over sand and cement or slurry cementitious coatings. The only disadvantages the brickwork can sweat behind it. Also make sure any electrical sockets are surface mounted and any fixtures like skirting-boards etc have silicone mastic applied to the raw plug hole before fitting the plug, this stops the membrane from being punctuated and prevents any moisture from escaping.

Would it be worth removing the chimney breasts completely? Save you having to have that vent and constant draw of air?? Or is it for feature/aesthetics now?

I'm on expert but, I get that the membrane will prevent the danp from penetrating through to your new plaster and ultimately into the room. What I don't get is, the damp from the hydroscopic salts in the brickwork behind the membrane is still occurring and will ultimately damage the structure behind all of the membrane.

Hi Stephen, Thanks for the insightful question! The main cause of the issue is typically high moisture content in the room air itself, which reacts when it contacts the hygroscopic salts in the wall. By installing a constant trickle fan in both the bathroom and kitchen, the overall moisture levels in the room will be lowered, helping to prevent this reaction. With the damp-proof membrane acting as a barrier between the hygroscopic salts and the room’s air, they won’t come into direct contact, which effectively minimises is issue. This approach tackles the root issue by reducing room humidity and isolating the salts, keeping the interior dry and protected. Hope this helps clarify, and thanks for watching!
