You've spent all that time and effort germinating your little seeds and taking care of your baby plants but now is the most important time in your garden because it is so easy to kill your seedlings. Germinating the seeds is the easy part keeping those seedlings alive is the harder part. So today - potting on for beginners.
So now that we have little seedlings that are healthy, strong and growing, we need to move them on to larger modules or pots to ensure they have room, enough nutrition and enough water to help them grow into strong plants. This is relevant to vegetables and flowers alike. We call this process pricking out and potting on and I'm going to take you through it to take the fear out of gardening.
I'll also let you see how I deal with leggy seedlings, cause they happen and it's not the end of the world.

New subscriber coming from Scott’s channel. :) I had a similar thing happen to me this year too. Dumped all of my dwarf coneflowers and ground cherries because I was in a hurry. Total nightmare. I did want to suggest adding vermiculite to your seed soil. That’s what I do with mine (I live in arid California) and my babies are able to handle a day of missed watering because of it. Got to admit, although I use those Container Wise trays with the tiny cells (which I'm starting my second year with) for some things (some herbs, some small flowers etc.), I don't like them nearly as much as the other trays they sell - which are great! Pretty much any of their others have proved better, even the 77L tray, where the cells are theoretically the same size (3cm squares). Those cells, though they're same size on top are both a bit deeper and a lot less tapered, so each cell holds nearly twice as much compost, which makes a huge difference to how quickly they dry out and how long a seedling can stay in it before it must be potted up. (Not to mention you get an extra 17 cells in the same space.) Thanks for your videos, btw, always look forward to them!

Because I loathe watering constantly I’m actually moving away from cells and instead I’m mass sowing in small pots. They’re 1.5x1.5x3inches (found on Amazon). It’s takes some extra time to separate them and up pot but I’m saving all that time watering. And honestly the less time I spend watering = less opportunity for me to accidentally drop them all on the ground. 😏

Great video! I hate potting up seedlings! I'm going to try this year something new - starting them in 3 inch pots. Bottom 2 inches potting soil, top one inch with seed starting mix. My thought is that once they get their roots going, potting mix below will probide nutrition. Might be crazy, but that's what I love about gardening - experimenting!

This is one of the best seedling care videos on YT! Seed start in smaller cells with high drainage, fine texture, low nutrient seed starting medium; pot up as soon as the babies look sturdy enough to handle. And DON'T panic. Even though wailing and carrying on is allowed. But are some plants fine to start with higher nutrient medium? I noticed that the volunteer tomatoes that came up in my compost grew faster so no matter how much I babied my seed-started ones (because I knew I wanted those varieties); the volunteers now are adult plants and flowering, even though some never even made it to official beds or containers. The seed started ones are still in their potted up cells, doing well, but nothing super. I know you have a short growing season, but do you ever start seeds straight into potting mix?
@eliandkate
@eliandkate Жыл бұрын
ha ha ha wailing and gnashing of teeth definitely allowed! All of these recommendations are purely just that, just recommendations. There is absolutely nothing to say not to start your seedlings in potting mix of straight compost and I've done it loads. These are just recommendations based on some best practice, but that's for many reasons... sometimes it's about cost, reducing waste etc as much as getting the best out of plants :D

My big B@@ls up has been potting them on out of the propagator, and thinking I was doing a good thing keeping them in the conservatory, it was too cold for them, lost a lot of my Dahlias, a couple of peppers and chillies. Luckily I was heavy handed when sowing...........😂 lol I can recommend the Containerwise containers, I got some of the smaller ones but they do dry out quickly especially if on heat, the bigger ones you have I have them, they are great. One thing I have done with the smaller ones though is chop them up with a hot knife, I found that if I was sowing in the 40 cell tray with different things they all needed to come out at different times, chop them up, they are still strong

Hi Eli, thank you for these amazing videos. I have one question if you (or anyone here) can help. I've got my tiny little onion seedlings poking themselves up out of the seedling mix. I know you said to pot them into a potting mix once they have 2 true leaves, but onions only have one floppy tentacle leaf! How do you know when to put them into their potting mix please? They are currently in 50/50 coco coir and perlite.

Now I just thought of something Melissa. It didn't occur to me that you might be growing from seed and not sets. I don't actually have any experience of this so I'm going going to recommend you pop over to @GardenerScott he posted a video on growing onions yesterday. Tell him sent you to ask for help 🙂

There’s also a great (old) onion video on MIGardeners channel. I think it’s from last year. He grows a flat of onions from seed and then up-pots them once they’re about 3-4” in height. I’ve done the same, though my area is terrible for onions since we go from winter straight into summer, and I couldn’t tell you if there’s a better way since mine stalled once April came. 😬 But check out his vid and join our Lives every Tuesday morning if you want. :)

Hey Kimberly Hmmm I can occasionally if it's relevant but I wouldn't be able to do that in every video. It would just be a bit too complicated to maintain I'm afraid. Because I'm using modules, the seed compost tends to stay on the roots so moved along with the little plant to its new home. You could reuse but just remember to have a think about if it need sterilised again or not

@eliandkate
@eliandkate 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Chris It's a heated propagators with lights. So I use this the same as the heat mat and light I useed in previous years, just an upgrade. It's just for the hot crops like peppers, tomatoes and aubergines. The other bits and bob's I have going don't need heat but they are in the greenhouse because we still have the potential for proper freezing cold nights here. This week is generally our coldest week of the year... so for those plants, if I feel the need I can cover the benches with fleece just for an extra help on a really cold night 😀

Hi. What zone are you in ?
@eliandkate
@eliandkate 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Sandra, I'm not actually in the zone system. I'm in Scotland in the UK and we don't use the zones here. They are primarily a US thing. If it helps to imagine if my garden relates to yours, we get a lot of rain, it's a very wet climate here right through the year, making freezing temperatures a real problem because when everything is wet, everything freezes. We get a lot of hard frosts through autumn, winter and spring, but we don't get a lot of snow, I think because we are right on the coast. Temperature-wise, well it's not consistent. Generally, on proper cold days in winter we may be looking at minus 6C although very cold snaps occasionally happen and I've measured the temperature as minus 14C on those, but that's not common. In Summer, we average around 18C to 22C although it has steadily been climbing over the last few years and last year we had a few VERY hot days above 25C. However, we have cloud cover pretty much right through the year with only some of the hottest weeks of summer where we don't have cloud cover. I hop that helps.
