@@yasu_red It's not irrational, most ppl aren't computer mechanics, most ppl won't be able to tell hidden deflect when checking the card, and unless one can plug it in and test it thorough before buying it, it's always a risky move to buy a used GPU unless it's a killer deal, ever since the mining thing took off.

@@z54964380 Most potential issues can be avoided by looking for a seller with a history of good feedback, and ex-mining cards are often undervolted so more can be used on the same power supply or to save on electricity costs. Update: 5900x is defective, I throwed the kitchen sink at that sucker. Gave it my all, somehow a priest would last longer in a brothel than the time it took from boot to crash approximately 6 seconds. I switched to DDR5 with some deep discounts. The discounts were only a few hours it seemed, got a Z790 with 64Gb for under CAD $500, but you need to be balsy and tell vendors to price match and if they don't move on and be patient. In Canada, you get great comparing options with Canada Computer, Memory Express, some BestBuy (mice keyboards etc.) and of course Amazon. I went with the Thermal Right Frozen Notte for the price of an air cooler. Got a brand-new Fractal Meshify 2C for 100 bucks, brand new in the box, but a skunk had gotten hold of the box, so the owner did not want to keep it. Cut the box off before I put it in the car and put the stinky cardboard in a blue bin along the way. I did get a 4070 from Zotac because it has the Spider-Man 2 across the Spider Verse stuff with it (instant collector item, for me at least) for CAD $603.50 before taxes. The only thing that got me stuck for a day was the MSI motherboard that came DOA. So I have a decent upgrade to my rig for under 1300 Canadian Loonies.

@@karankarwal5626 Amazon as a warehouse deal. Meaning technically it was an open box. It was 150 down from the normal price and sold as used-good. For air cooler, I got amazing performance with the ID-COOLING SE-225-XT. Worked fantastically well with a 5600x, but just barely with a 5700x. So, depends on your power draw. The used market is very useful once you figure out what to look for (a seller with a decently long history of good feedback for example). The worry people have about ex-mining GPUs is also blown out of proportion, considering that many will undervolt their cards in order to power more of them on the same system or to spend less on electricity. Gamers wear out GPUs much more with overclocks and other forms of pushing things to the limit, and I'm guilty of this myself.

Regarding RAM upgrades mentioned in relation to the 5800X3D: do you realise that the massive L3 cache basically makes that CPU hardly sensitive to RAM speed? DDR4, with good timings and speeds, is cheap, but it's less relevant for owners of this chip. This is completely different with regular Ryzen CPUs which benefit greatly from fast RAM running at mT/s rates that are a multiple of the memory controller speed, though the Zen 5 CPUs occasionally perform best (depending on the scenario) while running faster RAM with tight timings asynchronous with the memory controller.

On top of that the Z690 can be updated to be compatible with the 14th gen raptor lake refresh cpu's and the 14900k does have a decent uplift over the 13900k. Honestly, FS140v2, PS120 or PA120 would be best. The FC140 isn't quite as good since it uses a slightly older TR mounting setup

Comparing prices. New system are not as overprice as you made it sound. And the only reason why not to jump to a new system would be if you already have a AM4 system that you can drop a latest higher end AM4 on it without having to buy anything else. But if you are building a new PC from scratch. AM5 will be great. You'd be able to get most of it. For Intel, go for whatever is cheaper to build now. Because regardless of if you pick last current CPU gen or previous, it's a dead platform. With not much upgrade room. Other than jumping to a higher end from same gen.

But there are plenty of options for upgrading on the Intel side too...
@Omizuke
@Omizuke 10 ай бұрын
@HardwareCanucks Like for example? I thought that if I build a PC with an 13/14700K on a Z790. The next gen intel would use a different socket so only upgrade would be the 14900k. LGA 1700 is done. If you are buying older to save money. Like on the 12th gen you can upgrade or if you already had it. But if you are building from zero. Intel doesn't seem like a great deal unless you already build a whole system every few years when you change. So longevity of a socket doesn't matter. Let's say you build 14th now. You can buy DDR5 new, or use your old DDR4 if you had, sonyou either buy the ram now or for your next build you'll have to buy it anyway making your next upgrade basically a new mobo+cpu+ram build. I already know what it's like to build at the end of an Intel era. To save some money. When Kqby Lake came out I bought a PC on a budget that had Skylake. It also had DDR3L potential upgrade path was limited to an i7 7700k. Anything further would require new mobo and ram. Dame can be said with current system, The cheaper build would be a DDR4. And if you are gonna go DDR5 might as well go AMD which have had many price drops in mobos and CPU a lot lately. Or just wait for 15th gen if you can. And I've been teen blue and green exclusively for over a decade. (Productivity reasons, not blind fan, I needed specific features) and even now my current PC is i5 + RTX 3060 ti. But still. Can't recomend building a while new system on Intel right now.

I'd be wary of buying a laptop with less than 32gb of ram. Ram is so cheap and most of it is soldered-on these days, I think a lot of manufacturers see it as a way to force users to replace rather than to upgrade perfectly good systems.

@@HardwareCanucks Interesting, I hadn't thought of that. It might make me look into x3d chips for a mobile system (so I could still go with more ram), but it doesn't look like they have anything similar to the 7800x3d for mobile.

How did you get this WD red pro 22TB on Amazon? There were none yesteray nor today. This must be from last year, and also in USD. I actually found a crazy deal on WD Canadian website. This exact same 22tb for 463$ CAD, free delivery, only charging 5% Canadian taxes (no 9.975% Quebec taxes) 487$ CAD tax in is diry cheap for us, hypertaxed Quebecers (15% on everything). Since Quebec taxes are calculated over Canadian taxes, this is another ~50$ saving. 😅 At today's exchange rate (1.37) this is 338$ USD! 15$USD / TB = ~21$CAD / TB

The only laptops with long-term reliability are from Dell and Asus. MSI and HP have extremely shoddy hinges. Lenovo has power buttons designed by some bumpkin, among the many cheapify design choices they make. Acer is an okay choice, if you can't find a similar Dell or Asus. And yes, I am aware Dell and Asus have their own design issues, but at least you'll find out within the 1yr warranty period if you bought a lemon or not.

You forgot 2 things when it comes to laptops: -Don't know how good the real first generation ARM-based Windows laptops will be next year (Snapdron X Elite), but they will certainly be interesting -If that won't work out, i would strongly consider a framework laptop with the new Zen 4 Ryzen chips. I heard great things about them and i ordered one myself, should arrive by the end of this year

@@noir-13 Just look them up. It depends a bit. Yes for the same hardware(cpu) i guess you can say that they are a bit more expensive but they have all that good benefits like modularity, repairability and upgradability. Also they are very well made, cnc aluminum body, high resolution screen, very good keyboard. With the new ryzen chips they are also very fast and power efficient (over 10h battery life) so i think for that money you get A LOT. Actually i would even say more than everywhere else

It's almost exclusively people in the US that say Z rather than Zed, I couldn't tell you why that is though. We can't use the metric system like most of the rest of the planet does either, so maybe it has something to do with our independence from Britain, because that's the reasoning that we created the SAE standard for tools, which I hate btw. metric is so much easier to deal with than fractions when it comes to trying to fix anything.

A console has additional costs involved, that's why Microsoft and Sony sell them for a loss. A PC also has a far larger selection of games and Steam has good sales nearly constantly.
@robertt9342
@robertt9342 11 ай бұрын
@@yasu_red.how sure are you that they are selling them for a loss? Sonys CFO would disagree. This doesn’t mean that there isn’t the additional cost you speak of. Also, it really depends on how you use your console/pc, the games you play, and the services you use. The OP has a point where they are squeezing the budget/entry level gamer out of the market…. Which is a very large segment. Worst part is that cou/motherborad/storage/memory is pretty decently priced. GPUs are really putting a strain on things.
@yasu_red
@yasu_red 11 ай бұрын
@@robertt9342 I wasn't aware that it changed for Sony. The additional costs are still a significant addition to what at a surface level seems to be a console with good value. The GPU side of things is absolutely at a low point though, Nvidia especially needs to get its head out of the sand (though AMD is also sort-of guilty).
