Thank you for the shout out. I was an automotive machinist engine builder for the first half of my career. Retired from a lifetime in the automotive aftermarket.

Weld positioner or manual work holding chuck. Dont mess with fixing or messing with it. Lots of time involved. Great new bushings. Zamak aluminum magical witches brew. Recast from old hot wheels cars...maybe. glad you are back!
@theeddies
@theeddies 2 жыл бұрын
I am definitely leaning to just using for other stuff as is but not on the lathe. Lol "hot wheels" I need to find something that is made of zamack that I can destructively test against the plastic other than my old lathe parts.

Get a bunch of old rusty metal roofing of different colors and lengths to put up on your fence like old wrecking and junk yards. Make sure and put it up on your side of the fence.
@theeddies
@theeddies 2 жыл бұрын
Lol, that is a good idea. The one neighbor actually used old wood and new and mixed it up randomly so it looks all patch work, but I like your idea better. I won round one though, I got a letter from the city thanking me for the clean up I did do and the case was closed. I should just put up a fence and be done with her but its the principal now. I am thinking about lighting up my sheds so she can see them at night. You back in Alaska?

Mill away the broken rails, then mill a slot in its place. Then fit a new 'tongue' which matches the groove in the jaws accurately. there should be enough material to screw the tongue to the chuck body from the front....
@theeddies
@theeddies 2 жыл бұрын
I think I see where you are going here Joe. Just to clarify are you saying mill the groove deep enough that the fastener would go through it from the face of the chuck? The tongue or new rail then is just a flat piece with holes? Thanks! Eddie

I'm glad my neighbors are not the nosy type. Would be nice if the one in back didn't have his cow fence two feet over my line toward one corner, but if it avoids a petty squabble I'll let it be until (if) he replaces the fence.

G'day Eddie. Neighbours, they can be a problem, I'm blessed to have good mind their own business kind sorry you don't. Brazing the chuck would be OK if you can get in there but yes it's probably best as a welding positioned. Cheers Peter

Yes, all my neighbors are great except this one. She has made enemies of everyone around her for no real reason. I actually had a nice conversation with her husband when she moved in but she has never even talked to me or anyone else apparently. Now that I have a replacement, a welding positioner project is most likely its future. Thanks! Eddie

Good job,Eddie, thanks for showing. My opinion on the chuck: scrap it....Very unusual damage there...never seen before....who knows what happend to it.
@theeddies
@theeddies 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the more I think about it I am not likely going to use it as chuck so why fix it. It will make a good welding positioner piece or even drill press vise.

Atlas part strength is likely limited by layer adhesion rather than out and out material properties. Watch Stefan Herman's cnckitchen videos ftor tests and explanations.
@theeddies
@theeddies 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Bill, I think I have watched all the CNC kitchen videos. Layer adhesion is certainly the weak link luckily in this case and with gears as well the easiest print orientation is also going to be the strongest for the use. This particular plastic, PETG, has outstanding adhesion compared to PLA or even ABS at least on my printers. This part is going to be pushing perpendicular to the layers. In my thinking this particular part may be better suited to the job than the original Zamak. It would likely be the first thing that shears during a crash and could save an original gear and not mark the steel stub. But still strong enough to run the gears. We will see though. The more I think about it, the chuck is probably just going to be spun anymore except maybe in a positioner setup. All the best! Eddie

Chuck could be repaired but don't use at speed on a lathe. I'd mill away the existing shoulder and mill a groove in the flanks for a rectangular replacement piece , then braze that in and mill out the centre. Neighbors; neighbours can be a pita , compared to the one my brother has ATM yours are saints .

I was at the lumber yard the other day and they asked for my name. I said CASH! The guy said what's your first name... So I said JOHNNY! He chuckled so I walked inside to pay the girl. She said what name is it under, I said, Johnny CASH. She didn't get it. I learned that trick last year with fleabay. NEVER just buy something. You hit the watch button and wait a week or two. You'll almost always save a few bucks.

Lol. I will have to try that one sometime. As a more of a seller than a buyer on eBay I can attest to using the offer feature quite a bit. It actually costs a bit more in fees because eBay is a greedy pig but if a few dollars is all it takes to turn a sale it is worth it imho. Thanks! Eddie

The way it is going I will have one at some point. I have 2 (technically 2.5) printers now and am keeping them busy. There are some engineering plastics I want to try like carbon fiber reinforced polymers as well. This stuff surprises me sometimes. Best! Eddie
