Great job. I had to do both backing plates for my lathe. As easy as cast iron is to machine, I still hate machining it because of the mess. I just cleaned up my mill yesterday from boring a cast iron half nut for my lathe. I bit the bullet and spent a couple of hrs. doing a thorough job with vacuum cleaner then mineral spirits and wiping down with clean paper towels. Followed by WD-40 . Now I can rest assured it is not rusting while i am staying warm in the house. Thanks for taking the time making the video and all the detail.

Yes that stuff is a mess. Easy to cut, though not always easy to get a good finish. But the dust and chips are the worst. And they go everywhere even though I was using some shielding most of the time. Unfortunately I left the mic drawer open on my Kennedy, so now they all have to be cleaned and the drawer emptied as well. I need to use a gopro for cast in the future too. The camera need a complete cleaning. Oh well. the finished product looked god, lol. Thanks for watching!

@@theeddies I usually use aluminum kitchen foil to cover everything but this time i got in a hurry and regretted it within minutes. I was taking such fine cuts it was like powder. Still need to clean the drawers of my box and some of my tools.

@@terrycannon570 That's a good idea but I am the same way, I want to just start a job and then forget about everything around it, lol.

Perfect job Eddie, make a mandrel, or bore a fit, every time you need concentricity , far better than trying to dial it in.
@theeddies2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bill, that means a lot. I should have planned on the bore plug the whole time but I learned a bit as always.

That finish is nothing to sneeze at. It looks great. It's nice to have an alignment witness mark (line) that is half on the chuck and half on the backing plate so when you take it apart to clean it it goes back together the same way. I just used a scriber make a line on mine. - The tool post mounted indicator holder looks real good so far.
@theeddies2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, yes I need to do that before I ship it. I usually punch a dot on the adapter and the chuck across from each other. The indicator holder is not mine. I have been looking at a few designs out there to see if I can do anything different. That orange one in the picture is really good, hard to improve on.
@Dymitr_Nawrocki2 жыл бұрын
That's a nice looking backplate, the only thing i would do different is i would make recess on center as close to chuck as possible so chips won't fall in through that gap and get trapped between backplate and chuck, i was turning backplate for a bit bigger lathe lately (315mm chuck to 250mm chuck swap) and i had no tools to mesure such diameter so i just kept turning backplate and fitting chuck to it to see if it fits many times after more than a hour i had perfect fit without using any mesuring tools so i'm happy that my patience paid off.
@theeddies2 жыл бұрын
Hello, thanks! Yeah, I was just replicating the basic design of the original back plate except leaving it a bit thicker to give it some mass. Patience is the key word for sure.
