Toby was golfing with Clint Eastwood in 2018 & Clint was working on his movie 'The Mule' & Toby asked him how he kept going at his age? Clint said I get up & go outside & I don't let the old man in. Toby died the same way. He never quit. He kept going until the end. He actually did 3 live performances in Las Vegas in December after this. And yes, this was September 2023. He was receiving the 'People's Choice Country Icon Award' & also, yes that was his wife, Tricia. He gave the song to Clint for his birthday in 2018 after going home that day after golf & writing it. Clint used it in this movie 'The Mule' & it was perfect then, & now.

This was an amazing performance. He was shaking because by this point the cancer had taken half his body weight. He wrote this song in 2018 after a conversation with Clint Eastwood. Took on a whole new meaning after his battle with cancer. I took the he rides up on his horse and you feel that cold bitter wind as death too. Saying smile in the face of it and getting older and don't let the old man in and keep going.

Jamie, are we the ONLY ones who thought "the old man" was death? everyone else thinks differently. at least no one said that! Vinnie & Becka got it at the end! Dick Clark's son convinced him to do that song that night as he didn't want to do it! Toby wanted something more upbeat. Mr. Clark saw something no one else did, for sure! to me, it was the MOST fitting song at ANY award show!!!! no one will ever beat that one!!!! i heard this went number 1 on iTunes the next day! RIP YOUNG MAN!!!

@@lindastewart4768 he did want to do one of his other catchier toons but your right they thought after all he had been through it would be more fitting. Toby is extremely special to my family my son was serving during Toby’s USO tours my son was injured in turkey but during Toby’s tours they became friends my sons PTSD got real bad once he was released from the army Toby found someone he could talk to that he felt comfortable with if it wasn’t for Toby I probably wouldn’t have my son and my grandson wouldn’t have his daddy when Toby died it was the first time in 20 years I heard that kid cry

oh my! I'm sorry for y'all's loss!! i hope your son is doing OK now, since we lost him! i know it was hardest on him! I'm glad they were able to connect and that Mr Toby was able to help him along and talk to him! we ALL need someone like that! someone we can open up to and lean on, even just for a moment!! Mr Toby touched so so many people's lives! i just started listening to him the last few months, as my genre of music isn't so much country. I've heard him as my husband is country, but never followed him until recently! my heart is still broken, i can imagine the hurt and pain of those who knew him longer! i hope your son and your family can find some peace in all this!! i really do!! i know it was hard seeing your son cry, but I'm sure it was needed! take care, Jamie!! lots of love!

@@lindastewart4768I don’t think he was referring specifically to death when he wrote the song. He wasn’t sick or anticipating his death in 2018.Clint Eastwood’s answer about how he managed to keep up such a demanding schedule at his age….”I don’t let the old man in”., inspired Toby to write the song. (according to an interview I saw where Toby tells the story). I think the meaning is more of maintaining a tough and determined spirit and moving on with what you want to do, even though your body might be telling you to do otherwise. It’s just ironic that such a short time later, Toby realized this for his own situation. He fought so hard and he kept going. I can only imagine how hard it must have been for him to not just sit down and give up during his lowest points in his illness. In everything he said publicly, he never seemed to give up hope. He showed positive vibe to his fans. I did see an interview where he said he had stopped chemo. He said he thought it was doing him more harm than good and that he hoped he hadn’t stopped it too late. I admire him for being so strong and brave. He was a warrior. Even so, I’m sure behind the scenes there were struggles we could not and wouldn’t want to imagine. He said he leaned on his faith. He was a believer. He’s with God now. Our loss is Heaven’s gain. (The song, as you might know was used at the end of Clint Eastwood’s movie “The Mule”. ) If you haven’t seen it. I highly recommend it. It was so fitting for the movie, and even more so for Toby himself later on.

Death is not the old man, the old man is a mindset, as you age people tell “your old, slow down” the old man will kill you if you let him in. He isn’t death, the old man brings death.

As one person commented, Toby wrote this song for Clint's birthday as he inspired him to write this. The night before he went to dinner to celebrate n decided to have a few glasses of wine n said it was a bad idea because he was very sick oll night. He came to show anyway( he said he felt weak n shaky) At rehearsal the producer of show said to Toby" I want u to sing this song" Toby said " this will be a bummer" his friend was singing ' Who's Your Daddy' n Toby wanted to do an upbeat song. But in the end he said yes as people should live life by this song. During song he saw how women N Men had tears in their eyes n then realized he was living this song. The next day this song went to number 1 on the charts. The lighting made u think of Heaven sending the light to him.( follow the light Toby) You will be missed

The old man is literally the old version of oneself. He wrote the song because of something Clint Eastwood said about how he tries to live everyday like he didn’t know how old he was, keep the old man out and you will never be that old man

Rage against the dying of the light. Great fitting poem for him. And this: First Fig by Edna St. Vincent Millay 1892 -1950 "My candle burns at both ends; It will not last the night; But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends- It gives a lovely light!"

Before the humming verse. Toby is saying get up and go outside. After the humming verse, there where the horse rides up. Toby says look out your window and smile. As if to say that now the old man can no longer go outside. To weak and sick. The old man came in. We can't stop what is coming.

What a shitty thing to say. Do you have any idea what 2 1/2 years of chemo and radiation does to a person? He stopped treatment because he realized it had done more damage to him than the cancer had. His friend Brett Favre said that he had gone from 260 to 130 lbs and he had said he was tired. He knew he couldn't fight it anymore and decided to live what was left of his life doing what he loved with the people he loved. He didn't owe it to anyone to keep on fighting a losing battle.
