I first heard it when I was maybe 12, in the early 90s. I didn't have the emotional maturity to understand what I was feeling, but it hit me squarely in the gut. I listened to it over and over and over. It wasn't until a few years later how much it kept me going during a part of my life that wound up being particularly tough. It's a masterpiece that insists that you can find the light through serious darkness. Exceptionally special.

My first concert was Elton John. Honky Chateau was out and getting big airplay. Elton introduced songs off his newest album during the show, Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player. I think Daniel was the A side single from that album. If you missed an Elton concert from that era, you missed a great show.
@herrzimm

Honestly, the fact that Elton's appreciation from today's generation being so low is actually kind of depression. I mean, you are talking about one of the world's BEST performers, singing memorable and incredible songs on a consistent basis and influencing so many different artists in so many different genres. This sort of talent isn't just "hard to find"... but one that extremely RARE to begin with. And despite being from different generations, you cannot heap enough praise on Elton as he actually deserves to be heaped upon him. So, seeing younger people reacting to his songs for the first time is an absolute treat because it proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that when you have "greatness" in front of you, it transcends time itself.

I wouldn’t worry whether today’s kids listen to the music we grew up on or not, because we don’t listen to their music either. Every generation for the most part likes the music of their youth, and because Elton John or LED Zeppelin is not on my grandkids Spotify doesn’t bother me in the least, because Drake or Taylor Swift isn’t on mine either

This song highlights Elton's amazing talent to convey emotions in his vocals. The best example of this in a long catalogue of songs is "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" - perhaps because he is essentially singing his story (thru Bernie Taupin's words). "Bitch is Back" would be a good palate cleanser first, but "Someone" is the S-Tier Elton song still to be discovered.

I'm a little stunned we still have to tell you Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics for the vast majority of Elton's hits. And he did in this case. They are both absolutely 100% geniuses. Elton's musical genius and Taupin's lyrical genius. When discussing the lyrics you HAVE to mention him and possibly try to work out what he was trying to say. Obviously Elton's performance is critical as well.

Interesting… the original “The chorus of the song is supported with a horn arrangement by Del Newman, and features backing vocals by Carl Wilson and Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys and Toni Tennille. The original backing vocalists were Cat Stevens, Danny Hutton, Gerry Beckley, Dusty Springfield and Brian Wilson but according to Bruce "everyone was afraid of one another and I couldn't get a performance out of anyone".[2] Also on the song are percussion accents provided by Ray Cooper and a mellotron played by Dave Hentschel.”

THIS is an "S" tier song if there ever was one. Elevated to "S+" when in March of '91 George Michael invited John to join him in singing a duet of this great masterpiece. It was epic and became an instant classic after its release as a single later that year. Additionally, it's almost criminal to disregard the mentioning of Bernie Taupin when reacting to Elton John.

'always someone else I see' - I'm living the life someone else wants me to live, not being my true self - This is definitely one of my favorites of his songs - so many meanings you can take out of it and mostly because of the passion on the song!

I’m 59 years old and had not only the privilege but honor to witness Elton John live 12 times over the last 40 years. A complete musical Genius. One concert was over the top because it was Elton John and Billy Joel as one concert!!! What a night of fantastic music. You need to watch the duet he did with George Michael at live Aid it’s a great version of this song!👍🏻 I truly enjoy watching your musical education journey, just like l did when l was your age!!!👍🏻👍🏻

This was released in late spring of 74, I had just met the new girl in 9th grade and she was quickly grafted into my circle of freinds. We had the best summer ever, and then she moved away. We are freinds again thanks to facebook. Time passes, but these great songs of our youth keep the feelings and memories close in our hearts. The gang is still hangin', if only in our minds. This is one of those songs that really shows off not only Elton's talent, but the band's as well. The backing vocals are written and sung by the band...Nigel Olsson on drums/vocals, Dee Murray on bass/vocals, Davey Johnstone on guitars/vocals and the possibly insane Ray Cooper on tambourine/percussion. Nigel Olsson's drumming in particular is amazing. And in making these songs, each band member was responsible for creating his own sound within the song...with no input from Elton other than his writing the original melody. That's how Elton and the band could create so much music. The entire album here (Caribou) was written and recorded in 9 days, in between world tours.

You should do a John song, that isn't as big next. He did a Country song in the early 70s, called "Country Comfort". Very simplistic music, with good vocals, and great imagery. Bit of a deep cut.

George Michael did a cover of this in the 80s that, halfway through, turned into a duet with none other than Sir Elton himself. There is a live version of this performance that is really special. Both versions are great.

I like your discussion of the lyrics. I always took "I seach myself but it's always someone else I see" as someone seeing meaning of self only as it is reflected in someone else's eyes.That person's gaze gives affirmation or grounding. The song involves someone deeply attached to a relationship but also how he perceives himself because of that relationship. This is obviously S for me, along with Elton's "Someone Saved My Life Tonight." The lyrical meaning, arrangement and performance just work that well imo.

@@pjritts1 I used this song in a fanfic I wrote. I ascribed the meaning to a female character tho I hope the reader found a kind of mutuality in it that the male would never voice. The line I gave to her as esp. meaningful was: "I'll just let a fragment of your life to wander free" though I had the character admit that all she'd ever have of him was a fragment since the rest of him wandered free (he died). The female was an original character; the male was essentially adopted from an existing work, hence it being fanfic.
