As a massive fan of the game, I can say this episode deviated a LOT from how this stuff worked in the game. That being said this absolutely broke me and I'm glad they did it like this. The way it was in the game would not have necessarily worked in the medium of a tv series and the whole backstory with Bill and Frank would not have made sense in the game. Simply amazing.

In this world death is never far away. And in reality the same thing applies. We hide death away and never speak of it, but death lies on all of our doorsteps. This series is all about reaffirming that we, in spite and because of the death and horror visited upon us, must seek out our own humanity through connection with each other. Their death was always going to happen so we shouldn't be sad that it happened, but how they lived should make us happy for them.
@ChibiHoshiDragon Жыл бұрын
The Game story could have worked on TV IF Joel was the same. He is NOT! Game Joel cared a little. Show Joel Does NOT Game Joel was not the tough one. Tess was. He said: I am the romantic type to Tess. Malik is all tough and confronts Joel and is told to sit back down by Tess. When Tess tells him to take Ellie she says: There's enough here that you have to feel some sort of obligation to me. This all says Joel in the game still cares a little. So in the game it makes sense that he needs, narratively speaking, a "warning" of what can happen if you shut yourself off completely. Game Bill is that warning because Game Joel has NOT shut himself off completely. The Show's Joel doesn't Care. He is the one Robert fears. He is the one who is numb towards kids. Tess knew he didn't care for her; she says: I never asked you for anything, not to feel the way I felt. A Game Bill wouldn't make sense because Show Joel is ALREADY at that stage. A "warning" is too late. What Show Joel needs is an example or two of other paths he can take from where he already is. An example that despite being the curmudgeon, he can learn to love again.

It’s not what happened in the canon game. But I honestly enjoyed this more. This may be one of the most beautiful episodes of television I think I’ve seen in maybe the last 5-7 years if not something for my own person list of greatest hits. It’s not what happened in the game but the thing is, this isn’t the game, it’s a television adaption which means you should expect changes. The reason why most adaptions of games sucks because most changes made are stupid or feel extremely unnecessary and make for a worse story or cheapen the source material of the og. This episode did none of those things. They changed what they did in ways that worked and honestly made the story better. I’m so impressed, I’m so happy on-- multiple levels, not just as someone who played and loved the game for what it was but as someone who specifically relates to aspects of what they chose to change. I don’t know what to say other than this was beautiful. I know not everyone is going to be happy because that’s just human nature and you cannot please everyone. But I don’t think anyone can deny if you’re capable of divorcing the game from the show and enjoying both for what they are, there is no denying hbo did something gorgeous and BRAVE in more ways than one with this episode.

Tragically today Annie Wershing who played Tess in the game passed away at 45 due to cancer. So when they showed the flashback with Tess and Joel I cried. Rest In Peace Annie, we will never forget you. As for the episode itself, Neil Druckman said in the BTS video after the episode that he and Craig Mazin had this philosophy on the show was “when should we deviate and when should we come back, if it’s kinda the same or worse then they stay (completely faithful to the game), if it’s better we deviate”. I’m SO DAMN HAPPY THEY DEVIATED! I cried like once every 15 minutes this episode. This is one of the most beautiful and most emotionally powerful episodes of tv I’ve ever seen. The whole episode looked and felt like a movie that I guarantee would be on every critic’s shortlist for best picture at the Oscars. And I’m so happy that it ended with them dying together instead of Bill just forever living alone like in the game. And again Rest In Peace Annie Wershing.❤❤

Bill and Frank's story really touched me. In the real world, same sex marriage wouldn't be legal in Massachusetts until 2004. Here, the world fell apart in 2003, before any of that could happen for these two. Seeing as they met in middle-ish age in the mid-2000s, they were around to witness the AIDS crisis just a couple decades earlier, and likely lost friends during that period. Survival for people like them was never guaranteed in the "normal world", so for them to survive another epidemic, find love, and build a home in the ruins of a devastated community is a perfect example of "winning" the apocalypse.

He had plenty of other more jack-of-all-trades rifles to choose from. 20:25 Calling it right now. They took too many handguns and not enough rifles. That's another pop culture trope that needs to be "retired." Yes, I mean in the Blade Runner sense. Handguns are not the game-changers rifles are. They're sidearms. Backups. NOT primaries. Handguns are also more difficult to learn how to use proficiently due to their having fewer points of contact.

18:10 people knowing Part 2 be like: T_T Game spoiler for this episode: Frank hated Bill and tried to get away. In his attempt to fix up a car and steal resources he ended up getting infected and killed himself by hanging. Bill, Joel and Ellie together then found him at the end of that part of the game and take his car to start their trip towards Tommy. Frank's true feelings for Bill are only clear when you actually search the area for his letter, which you can give to him or keep for yourself after reading it. So here they actually stayed happy and grew old together and Frank managed to get Bill a bit out his deluded mind. Edit: Game letter below: "Well, Bill, I doubt you'd ever find this note cause you were too scared to ever make it to this part of town. But if for some reason you did, I want you to know I hated your guts. I grew tired of this shitty town and your set-in-your-ways attitude. I wanted more from life than this and you could never get that. And that stupid battery you kept moaning about -- I got it. But I guess you were right. Trying to leave this town will kill me. Still better than spending another day with you. Good Luck, Frank" Dialog if you decide to give him the note: Joel: Bill, I uh... I found this in there and I... I figured you should have it. Bill: That's how you feel. Well, fuck you too, Frank. Fuckin' idiot. You can pick up the crumbled note again, which I feel resembles Joel crumbling Bill's note in the show.
@ChristophTheTerrible Жыл бұрын
You see without ever meeting Frank I always assumed that they had an argument about leaving. Broke up and Frank left thinking Bill was too cautious and got the Battery but ended up getting infected. Bill was mad at him for leaving and his loathing grew for Frank. And Frank wrote that letter not as a fuck you but as a I know you hate me, I'd rather give you more of a reason to hate me than to say sorry and give you sadness. Hatred keeps you alive and sadness gets you dead. So in short when I played the game I assumed. Bill and Frank loved each other. Frank wanted them to leave to join a community or look for other people. Bill was cautious and wanted to hunker down. Eventually Frank resented Bill and left to get the Battery. He wrote the note in anger because he was angry but also because he knew if he apologized and said "Bill you were right it was too dangerous" Bill would have been, angry yes, but more saddened and could have done something drastic like self delete. Hatred is a great motivator to stay alive due to spite. But I could have been projecting at the time and reading to into it at the time.

it was all implied I guess, how did he get the tester device? FEDRA stopped by he took care of them and anybody else bothering him. Could we have more of it shown maybe but this was characters and emotion driven ep so I get why not.

@@miketrujillo3677 Joel even mentions this to Bill that they don't have to worry about FEDRA as they won't come out this far from the QZ (why would they given as far as they know the town has been completely evacuated) and Bill's traps ensures they don't have to worry about the odd infected when they show up. Raiders are their only threat and we do see them deal with that.

@@miketrujillo3677 Yeah I get it now, after some time reflecting on the episode it stopped bothering me, that wasn't really the point of the episode after all, I guess it just made me feel too removed from the apocalypse at first but that was part of the idea, I think.

They should have made bill and Frank’s backstory a lot shorter, and made them have a larger impact.

They already have a larger impact. Did you miss the part where Ellie reads Bill's letter to Joel?
@maxwell8758 Жыл бұрын
@@jhornacek That was a one sentence thing. It did not justify an hour long story. It was too boring and long and had little impact.

@@maxwell8758 It wasn't boring, it was an interesting and involving love story. It wasn't too long - the Bill and Frank content was barely an hour. And as for impact - again, if you had watched the episode you would have seen how Bill's letter and declaration that he and Joel are meant to be protectors affected him, and gave him the final push to protect Ellie and deliver her to the Fireflies.

It was a nice place that Bill and Frank made for themselves but if I were in Joel's shoes I would still have to go west to at least try and find my family. I would want to come back to Bill's though, that place was set up. Episode is dope top to bottom, loved the world building, loved the love story, and just generally dug that they showed a gay couple that wasn't a tired tropey cliche like Birdcage in the apocalypse.
@Riken Жыл бұрын
In game it was implied that Bill and Frank were a couple, though Frank got bit and fled off to part of the town filled with infected. I did like this interpretation from the show but I thought there were some important development parts between Joel and Ellie in the Bill part of the game that weren't shown in this episode but I feel like that's coming next episode in Pittsburgh and them hopefully meeting Henry and Sam at the end of the episode.
@jhornacek Жыл бұрын
In the game Frank didn't get bit until after he left Bill. Bill gives Joel a different version - that he was the one who broke up with Frank and sent him packing, but when you find Frank you realize it was the other way around.

Could not understand them repeatedly saying that Joel and Ellie should have stayed in Bill's town. Have they not been paying attention? Joel's main goal is to save Tommy - how is that going to happen if he stays here? And Ellie wants to get to the Fireflies out west to help find a cure - again, how does that happen if they stay here?
@Lucklaran Жыл бұрын
13:01 The most important words spoken in this show so far, "There wasn't anything to cure this before the world fell apart", followed closely by the one word response to the threat of Cordyceps from episode 2 "Bomb". The idea that someone could develop a cure to it "after the world fell apart" when there was no way to do that before is ludicrous. But then, we would not have this awesome show, right?
@jhornacek Жыл бұрын
They didn't have a cure for Cordyceps before the world fell apart because this was a new form of it that affected humans. But the Fireflies have been working on a cure for ~20 years. It's definitely not "ludicrous" that they would be able to come up with a cure in that time (with Ellie's help).
@Lucklaran Жыл бұрын
@@jhornacek You're missing my point. She was supposed to be the expert in fungi. She didn't even attempt to find a cure. She went straight to the "nuclear" option. Spoiler warning: Yet some random survivor of the apocalypse, working with limited resources available is going to be able to figure it out with the ONE sample they are going to be able to collect from the ONLY person immune to cordycepts, because the "extraction" will kill her. Meaning there will be NO other chances. The dude literally says he THINKS it MIGHT be possible to create a cure by killing Ellie. Meaning he does NOT know for sure. Never mind how they are going to replicate this without some kind of sterile environment in quantities sufficient to vaccinate whoever is left. Never mind the idea of distributing the vaccine in a world were random mobs will kill other people to steal their stuff without bothering to talk. What would most likely happen is the people transporting the vaccine will be killed and have their gear/supplies stolen, and, not knowing/understanding the vaccine, they will just leave it to rot. OR, if they did figure it out, they would just keep it for themsleves. The fireflies loft HALF their people just trying to get part way across America to the hospital. Even if by some miracle they did develope a vaccine, the odds are they'd be killed before they could distribute it. Look, it's a fun show, but in my opinion, it really requires far too much suspension of disbelief when it comes to "the cure"/

Not gonna lie, got somewhat of negative vibes about this reaction... They cry and get super emotional about all sorts of movies and stories, very easily, it's why I like the channel. But here's a gay love story and they kept changing the topic to about survival and prepping... Very little emotion... Heck even channels that don't usually get all emotional teared up about this. Even at the end "Oh you're still thinking about Bill and Frank, I'm thinking about Joel and Ellie"...
