1. NEVER shading with Black. 2. Always have color hierarchy (use color harmonies). 3. Balance Color: Cool (background) and Warm (focal point). 4. Add some color to the Terminator (or it would be dead-looking skin)

1. Never shading with Black I've seen this one misunderstood by traditional painters. Some think mixing black into your paint is wrong because of this rule, but mixing black actually cools warm colors and warms cool colors (depending on how warm or cool your black pigment is sometimes). You could just add another color to cool/warm the resulting mix anyways.

@@That1Weeb Well, it's kind of hard to explain, but simply put: My issue is that red looks brown-greenish. So, any color with red values will look different to me (for example, pink to me is _gray_). I've done grayscale shading, and never had an issue. Even more, I prefer plain inking and halftones over color because of this. Lately I've been color shading, by using theory, i.e. move the color cursor to more saturated and less bright. It works okay for me.

@@artbargra i think it would be really interesting to see how your drawings look with colors _you_ pick, that _you_ think look good together. Rather than just having the same colors that everyone else uses. You don't always have to follow the "rules" because everyone else decided that's what looks good. If you get a lot of critiques from other artists saying it looks weird, that's when i would try to work on it. Sometimes the most interesting art comes from people that have something wrong with them (I have problems with my eyes too that are hard to explain but i see color normally). @galvanizeddreamer20512 жыл бұрын
If I may be blunt, it really depends on what you are actually trying to do. That applies to all of these. Shading with black really just depends on the media. It's much faster, so it is valuable for comic and webcomic artists. However as Speedwagon posted, doing a multiply instead of an add with a reddish-brown tone also works. (or whatever the temperature of the ambient light is. Your shadows are going to be green if your light is.) Outside of speed, you are correct, and proper saturation alteration is valuable. Desaturation can be used for focus as well as saturation, as long as it provides a contrast. The reason it is eye-catching however changes from the color's innate attraction, and more into the eye finding an aberration in the whole. That does not really apply to your example however, as it is a bit too soft and more muddled than would allow it. The method I am speaking of requires much harder lines, and sharper coloring styles; it does not work well with anything smooth. Shoes as well are a weird example, because womens' shoes realistically are borderline gaudy. They are intended to be explicitly striking, and often need to stand on their own. It is not uncommon for a girl to wear a black dress and vibrant gold or white shoes. Personally, the top is the issue in that example. In the "correct" colorscheme, her pauldrons are the same color as her shoes, that needs to be reflected in the left. After that, I would alter the main cloth of the top into something more like a blood red, with the cuffs either burgundy or a dark seafoam depending on how crazy you want to get. Then do the brown V as a black for contrast, and then reflect shoes' color scheme into the blue armor harness. I would also do the bow in something that contrasts the hair better, a blue or a purple IMO, of which you could have match the armor harness as well if you want. While your first example on color balance is reasonable, my only objection being it feels like running sandpaper across my eyes, your second I feel genuinely harms the composition of the piece. You add color in a way that genuinely makes no sense. There is no yellowish lightsource in that area, and the color does not represent her surroundings. If you're going to do that drastic of a change in color temp, you need to do it for that entire overhang and cliff, otherwise it's going to look weird (such as how it looks like the character is literally made out of glowing bronze). Personally, in that situation, you need to barely, _barely_ increase the warmth of the terminator, and shadows, then up the saturation a bit. Nothing nearly as drastic as what you've done. As for color harmony, while true in some cases, very quickly starts to look artificial. Something I noticed in a lot of your examples is a distinct lack of brown and off-white, two very common base colors for clothing due to their association with leather and cloth respectively. Almost all of your work uses bright colors for clothing, which does not always work. Multi-color outfits often feel overly perfect as well, and look more like a uniform than any sort of actual clothing someone would wear. If you aare doing pallet swaps for Smash Bros, sure, that kinda thing works. But for an original character design, you need to be more conscious of what a character might actually wear. Doubly so when you start matching clothes and hair. Nobody has an entire wardrobe centered around their hair dye. Personally, the only difference I would make with that first piece, would be make her gloves brown, and the metal either a dark grey steel, or copper (leaning towards copper). Otherwise, the bright red contrasts well to the duller blue steel. As well hair and eye color need to be fairly different to eachother, otherwise they eyes get lost like in your third-to-last example. Lastly, when dealing with terminators, you have to keep in mind two things: first is lighting color, and second is sub-surface structure of the item in question. If your object is something with skin, your terminator is going to have a lot of subsurface color shining through, which is going to be the blood and red flesh under the skin. Meanwhile, a vase need focus on the color of the light itself, as it is entirely opaque. You can't just add color and it work fine, you have to make sure it matches the environment. That Rei is perfectly acceptable, but once you start adding in that yellow, it completely screws with the color composition, making it look almost cream, or like she's in a dingy basement under an incandescent light. If that's your intent, then that's good, but you need to do things with intent.

7:08 While i do agree here, you have the the complementary colors, but what you have done is essentially reduce the number of colors in the image to mostly purple and green, even the hair, so it feels more monochromatic and therefore more closer to grayscale. If you are going to use only 2 colors then the lighting itself better bring those extra colors in the piece to save it. I think personally the left image is more visually appealing, apart from the oversaturated green gloves. Make them Brown or light orange and you'd have a great image. Complementary doesn't necessarily mean better.

I heard different definitions for what "cool" colors means. Often people mean colors which hue is more in the blue, but sometimes I see people describing colors that are less saturated.
@Heaven-kp7ls2 жыл бұрын
I think I believe more in the first one, for one simple reason: when put against each other, a less saturated version of the same color will look like the opposite color in the color wheel. A desaturated green painted on top of a very saturated green won't look cooler, it will look red.
@TheDarkSittich2 жыл бұрын
@@Heaven-kp7ls I get the feeling that those definitions are very relative. It's a lot about how a color "feels" I think. Like we associate the color red with warmth, but only because things like fire are usually red so we connect those things mentally. Or is it really because red is more in the infra red spectrum of light? If that'd be the case, we would associate pruple as the coldest color. But I'd argue there are purple hues that "feel" warmer. Just a thought though
@Heaven-kp7ls2 жыл бұрын
@@TheDarkSittich that's a really good point! I'll raise you that light colors and paint colors are completely different though. Since purple is a mixture of blue and red in pigments, purple hues with more red will feel warmer. Red and blue-violet light make magenta. In my personal opinion though, the warmest color is orange (mixture of the two warm primary colors and opposite of blue), not red. There is actually a very interesting Marco Bucci video about color relativity, and it shows very well what I was talking about. A middle-of-the-road gray painted over blue will look orange, and the same gray painted over orange will look blue. Color theory is beautiful!

Maybe I'm misremembering, but I recall Marc mentioned in one of his older videos about shading that shades could be done using a specific color that was kind of a light brown-ish (idk the actual color's name, sorry) and setting the layer as "difference", but in this one he suggested that the shading should be done using darker tones of the color we're using for the base. The question would be, which of the two methods works best/would you recommend the most? I'm definitely gonna try both since I've been wanting to improve my coloring and shading, but I'd like to hear some thoughts on the matter.
@darpe.d56032 жыл бұрын
brownish shadows may be used for some basic shading when you dont have anything else going around. however if u have something happening with your character (like a scene behind, or a specific light source) u can use a different color to shade. it helps to blend your character in the art, because shadows arent always brown. they may be green or blue or purple- anything honestly. Even black in theory but never a raw black. when using black and white u should use specific filters. but thats for another topic ;)

The “never use black” works to an extent depending on tone, amount used, location on the object, and art style. Black shadows can work in comics, but is a bit tricky to make or break with it. Simply context and intention. Black and white are neutral colors, so there isn’t much to work with to make the picture look vibrant and it’s more easy to mess up compared to a color-toned shade. They fit more in super dark areas for black and very bright spots for white. The color hierarchy and balance is one of the best things I’ve learned from this dude
@JayJay-ow2eu2 жыл бұрын
Of course it can be used but as he said for the color hierarchy, if you don't really know what you're doing you should go for the safest outcome. Since black shading is really tricky to pull off correctly its better for begginers and even intermediate artist to stick with the stuff he said in the video

Another tip I've never heard of in other videos is the saturation. Even in the art classes I have had they do tell you cool colors recede and warm colors pop out. Never once in school or any video did any one mention using saturation to help something stand out. It really does sound just so basic its a wonder no one has mentioned it before. to add some explanation, cool colors sink to the background because our atmosphere is mostly blue (think distance mountains getting blue and blurry from all the particles between us and them). Warm colors pop because we associate them with light from natural sunlight and fire.

I've been drawing for fifteen years and I've made all of those mistakes. Nice! 🤠

Thanks for this. Already had known several of these, but it's good to have them all in one video for reference instead several different videos from different people as I used to.

One of the best videos i've seen from your channel. Packed with information in a short time, and this information is usually hard to come by in other art channels

I watched a lot about colors but I guess this one video goes simple and clear, definetely will remember your tips ! Even if I don't really agree with the warm red artwork, I think it looks really cool, and even if light is better on your colder version, the intention is really not the same.

Great tips! Just a small correction: at 8:35 it is not armor, it is a suit improving synchronization rate between the pilot and the evangelion, also known as "plugsuit" 😁

So, to put it all togheter (and please corect me, if i got something wrong): Warm light + cool shadows Warm shadows + cool light shadows have at least a bit of the color of the environment strong transition between light and shadow colors on opposite sides of the color wheel are more harmonious brighter colors= more attention (focus) from viewers

when you put the saturated color on the shading my jaw DROPPED! I've just been trying to learn color theory since color is something I struggle with. You, as usual, posted yet another great video. This really helped. Thank you.
