Just a note: free food may not be good food. Example: United Airlines lounges at Dulles (IAD) and Los Angeles (LAX) have horrible food, not even any bottled water! You don’t even necessarily need a membership or creditcard to get into a lounge. There’s an app called Loungebuddy which shows you the lounges you can get into for between $20-$50 in every airport. I never really have long layovers but I can imagine spending that $50 for a comfortable place to sit and food and drinks actually saves you money on, say, a 6-hour layover. A sandwich and a bottle of soda can easily set you back $15 in an airport, so if your layover is long enough it can easily save you some money and a lot of back aches! Thanks for sharing so much btw Dan! I don’t fly all that often but when I do, accounts like yours make sure I’m just fully prepped and have nothing to worry about during my trip!

Lip balm, ear plugs, eye shades. Toothbrush - brushing your teeth is good way to signal to your body you’re going to go to sleep. Hairbrush, moisturiser for hands and face. If I’m flying business and there’s no complimentary PJs I bring my own. Changing clothes again helps to signal to the body it’s time to sleep when you’re out of your normal time zone and environment. Essential prescription meds if you have them. NEVER put them in the hold. Bring painkillers and if in economy sleeping tablets are a Godsend. I know lots of people say it’s bad in case of an emergency. So make your own choices. A book. Rarely do I have the luxury of reading for pleasure. A long flight is an ideal place to read that booker prize winner you’ve been promising to read all year.

I'd say a good tip for airlines, lounge access is a cheap perk for irritated passengers who've missed a connection due to delay. We're tired of being in a crowded, brightly lit space for hours, many of us just want somewhere calm and quiet to rest for a few hours until the next flight. It'll probably soothe a lot of tension.

The best arguement for taking a light change of clothing in your carry-on is the Ron Howard experience. Howard is the well-known director and actor. Howard and family were on a flight to New Zealand; his infant did projectile vomiting on his shirt. He cleaned up ok in restroom as best as he could. But it was 12 hours more to NZ, and all his clean shirts were in luggage packed in the hold of the plane. That's why you have a t-shirt in carry-on. Unless you like smelling like vomit, and love the shunning from other passengers. 😘

On delays and cancellations: What I do is take a seat in the boarding area and wait while all the crazies gather around the counter. Once they are gone, I walk up very calmly and tell the agent I am sorry they had to go through all of that. I give them my ticket and we have polite small talk while they figure out what to do with me. (Hint: if there is a kiosk open that sells chocolates or cookies I will use my waiting time to buy a box for the agent) Even without the gift, I have been upgraded every single time by simply being a breath of fresh air for the agent. Being polite goes a long way.
@larrybothe82465 жыл бұрын
I’d appreciate if you would do a video about interacting with a gate agent when your connecting flight is suspiciously delayed, that is when it seems to be inconvenient to the airline (not enough passengers to make it profitable). I’m a pleasant, patient guy, but at times I’ve had to reluctantly pay hardball and make people do their jobs. I hate doing this. However, I will NOT be a doormat!!
@Croz893 жыл бұрын
I think it's important to know your rights and push for them if needed. If the gate agent or customer service rep refuses to do something that's in the T&C or even a legal requirement, you need to be polite but firm about it, remind them of the rules, but assume ignorance before malice, airline staff do forget things from time to time. If they still push back, well that's when you need to channel your inner Karen and ask for the manager.

And: Pro tip for those who use a CPAP machine - you can bring your CPAP onboard with you and it doesn't count as a carry-on item since it is a medical device. Just remember to let the airline know when you make your reservation that you'll be bringing it, get a tag for it that says "medical device", and understand that unless you have a backup battery, you most likely will not be able to use it on the plane.

Aaaaahhhh.... Daniel. Wonderful travel tips, and the honesty that you don't always conform to such. Did chuckle at your reference to the Expiration Date of "2024" for a desert. Should give many a moment of pause to consider what they are stuffing into their mouths. By the way, those sugary drinks which many consume so much of on a flight, and sugary snacks, only make you thirstier. Ever wonder why you seem thirsty after a Coke, and such? Its not by chance that this occurs. Hmmmmm..... how does one create the need for another Coke (or similar) drink???? Too much coffee or tea will tend to dehydrate you as well. Bravo on your comment about flight attendants, ticket counter reps, etc. The more human we are with them, the better we treat them overall, the better for everyone. I've had the experience that comes with being understanding and kind to these folks. It not their fault that there are delays, and such. They're right in there with the rest of the PAX. Cheers.....

Greetings from DTW (aka Diversions To Work lol). I agree with #1. As a gate/ticketing agent, we want nothing more than the schedule to have flights run on time if not early and believe me when I say I've spent time at the gate literally running all over, working my ass off to make it happen. To add on to it, it also helps to not be overly indecisive during delays such as weather. I know it sounds counterintuitive, but I'm having to compete with hundreds of people for that seat on your behalf when you're going back and forth in your head. Doing that often makes the difference between me being able to confirm you on that flight, or forcing me to waitlist you and hope you get on, much less have a decent seat. I've endured more NYC weather/ATC delays than I care to count, and you have no idea how much it drives me and my coworkers crazy when people are being wishy-washy like that.

I flew Nice to Rome recently with Air Italia. The flight was delayed due to lazy check in and I had my baby getting more upset by the minute. Everyone was aggravated but we were so polite and friendly to the crew understanding it wasn’t their fault. However the crew were equally aggravated and took it out on the passengers. They couldn’t even be bothered with the safety instructions and allowed people to take off with reclined seats. Not one smile came from them and food was pretty much thrown at us. Make sure you use a suitcase/bag that is adequately sized for your luggage - especially when flying low-cost airlines that have lower weight/size limits on checked or carry-on bags. I flew Spirit for the first time for a 2-week vacation, so obviously I wanted to bring a lot of clothes - however the weight limit was 40lbs for checked bags as opposed to the usual 50lb limit that Delta, American, and United all have. My suitcase is huge and therefore took up a lot of weight on its own. I could barely fill my suitcase halfway before hitting 40lbs. If you're ever in a similar situation where you're either taking a lot of luggage or flying with a low-cost carrier, make sure that you not only check their weight/dimension limits, but also ensure that your suitcase is JUST big enough for everything so it doesn't weigh any more than it needs to.

I love how there are so many sexual references like the 'protection', the food and drink with the eggplant and drops, him saying 'down there', and how he writes 'or you get dirty onboard for some reason'.

My rule after crossing the 1.5 million mark ... (1) don’t be a Drama Queen. Gets you NOWHERE. (2) for me, I tend to arrive at airport early (which allows time to compensate for the unexpected ... and unexpected ALWAYS shows up in some form) and I head straight for the lounge after clearing security. I’m just not into last minute and out of breath anymore. I value my composure more. 👍🏻

You are so correct. No matter how much I fly, I arrive early to manage my anxiety.

Great edutaining video, Dan. PS In the US, I make sure to arrive extra early. Ever since 9 11, you never know how long the security line may take. 2 hours? 1/2 hour? I'm just not a fan of Flight Russian Roulette.
