Hi, I can relate this missing "S" sound! I think it's culturally engrained. First, I know many Asian languages don't have an "ending sound", so pronouncing the "S" at the end is just something Asian people are not accustomed to do. Second, in my language, Vietnamese, we say 1 cat, 2 cat, or many cat; thus, cat is singular regardless of how many there are. Or we can perfectly say "Yesterday I eat a lot but she eat more!" Man, verb agreement is a other story! Over all, it's more of a cultural habit (bad habit in this case when you're learning English). Trust me, there are many silly habits that we aren't aware of, especially when most are learning just enough English to get by. They really can't distinguish the mistakes subconsciously. I know a few adults who went to elementary school here but still consistently making basic grammatical errors. Go figure! Unless these speakers are consciously analyzing their bad habits and making a good effort to change, there's no way that I see your pet peeves get subsided! :-))

The reason that "I like cat" mean "I like to eat cats" is that when an animal is referred to in the singular tense, it means the MEAT of the animal. "I like chicken" is a common phrase, but "I like chickens" is not as common a phrase since most people don't have strong feelings about the birds while they're alive or enjoy the company of chickens. It's not that the word "eat" is implied, but rather that the name of an animal (and sometimes other objects) is the way to refer to the material it's made of, it's "dog-ness". You could say "I like cow" as in to eat cow meat, but for the common meats you would say the Anglicized-French word for the food "I like beef", beef being the English loan word from "Beouf" in French. That has to do with British history which you can read about seperately.

@LmdsLucas7 жыл бұрын
When you put a ''didn't'' you don't need to write the verb in past, you just do that > ''I didn't see''
@KS-ep1vr10 ай бұрын
A quick correction to eliminate confusion at 2:38: The word "sheep" IS the plural for sheep. If you like those animals, the correct sentence IS, "l like sheep." It would be incorrect (and sound hilarious) to say "I like sheeps."

BTW-my favourite mistake made constantly by one of my American friends (an ESL teacher) was saying 'I says" all the time, wrrrr. I had one question when I watched the good video "Using THE with common and abstract nouns", which seems to be Rebecca's lesson, but you have resolved most of it, Ronnie. If my understanding is correct, when we say "I like the dog", it could be possible that this sentence means "I like the dog's meat" instead of "I like the dog as a creature. Maybe when we hear the sentence most of us see the meaning as the latter, a dog as a creature, but it depends on a context, doesn't it? Thank you Ronnie, and thank you also Rebecca!
